View Full Version : Struggling with buns now that hair is longer

So I got to the point where I could do several buns well, my hair grew an inch, maybe two, and now I can get NOTHING to stay. Is this normal? Any tips for buns at the BCL+ length/things that change when bunning longer lengths?

All I can say is, just keep experimenting. I found that buns I used to think were too hard or just plain old impossible, suddenly became possible. Hair toys I could not get the hang of suddenly started to work.

I do think it's a process as it gets longer. For me, once I hit classic, suddenly stuff that had worked stopped working. Just keep trying new things and old things... There is a real knack to doing buns, and it takes practice. We usually accept this with braids; I think most people realize that braiding is a knack that takes practice... but then they expect they should just excel at buns... when buns take just as much practice as braiding does. I am sure you will soon have a new set of buns you love and they will be easy-peasy for you.

^ I absolutely agree with Amapola! :agree:

I'll just add what started working for me past TBL+ since we have some hairtype similarities:

- Braided Lazy Wrap Bun (with thumb sticking out): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DKLqSQWZos

- Braided Nautilus Bun: I do it using this pencil bun technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34

- Spidermom's Bun (I do it braided): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCvC_MU0To8

- Simplified Ellingwoman Braided Bun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_biroGTJ7A

- Something I call "Braided Infinity": it's a braided wrap with 2 loops (one created over fingers, on the right, and the other - over the thumb, on the left) - it ends up looking like an infinity bun, but braided.

Also, experiment with double buns and sectioned buns - they might hold better. Best of luck! :D And have fun experimenting with new hairstyles! :cheer:

I guess it depends on which buns are causing you trouble? I've seen some people say they had to start doing a second loop around the hand before wrapping the ends around the base for the lazy wrap/nautilus once they run out of fingers to add, for example, but I'd think that any bun could be adjusted that way to a point or you could start doing an alternate form of the bun.

For me, cinnabuns with amish pins was my go-to hairstyle until about waist . . . at which point my hair started spitting pins and falling out. But, suddenly I discovered that I could do lazy-wrap buns! Something I had never been able to do before. But there was definitely an awkward period where I couldn't do my usual favorite version of the cinnabun, but I couldn't get anything else to work either because I needed to practice more.

One style that got me through the awkward stages was the Disc Bun, which for me stayed much better in shorter-ish (between BSL and waist) hair than the lazy wrap. Or the nautilis (which I still can't get to work reliably, but I feel like would work with more hair.)

I had a point near TB where I think cinnamon buns totally quit working for me. Lazy wraps became much more my thing, though cinnamon buns are working again now. :\

I'm terrible at the Disc Bun, but a lot of people (especially those with thicker hair?) seem to really like it.

SO I was playing around with an infinity bun, and instead of wrapping the ends around before I pulled the loop over, I wrapped them around while holding the loop down against my head but before the stick was in. Lo and behold, it's staying and passed the jumping test!

my favorite are center held cinnabuns since my hair grew past tailbone. Normal cinnabuns work to but the might become a bit loopsided or ends fall out. Figure eight is ok too. I gave up on any buns that require a loop around the hand.

Very common and the perfect excuse to spend some time in YouTube learning new styles.

I'd never been able to get a sideways infinity bun to hold, while a vertical one worked very well. Lately the vertical has been falling out, but I tried the sideways one and it's holding like a rock! :D My ridiculous 9" stick, but it holds, so I'm not complaining :p
