View Full Version : Hair length chart and the length of the torso.

Hi,
I have a problem with the hair length chart.
I mean this here, you know it I think:
https://thehairfiles.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/hairfileshairchart-7.jpg
I have a very short torso and in proportion to it very long legs.
I don't know if you can see it in the video in my signature (I'm a hobby singer so it's a rehearsal video but you can see my torso there compared to the length of for example my head.)
So, for me personally BSL would be the same as MBL because my bra strap is in the middle of my back, only three to four inches or so from my waist.
Do you have the same problem?
And when my hair reaches my waist it'll be quite short compared to other people. I don't even know if I can do a braided cinnabun with WL.

I don't think there is anything "off" on your body, there are all kinds of high waisted people on here, including myself. Maybe i still end op with somewhat average measure because im very tall and also have an extremely long neck. Whatevs... at some üoint i stopped looking at the charts and also stopped measuring my hair, it only leads to these comparisons that have absolutely no value for your own growing process. Just find the markers on your own body and go by that. What is classic on one person might be mid thigh on another, what is midback could as well be hip and so on. Hairstyles also depend alot on hairtype. The only thing that makes sense to me in terms of cpu ting is probably the number or coils in a cinnabun. That should have it covered. Don't wprry so much about standards, none of us can ever possibly get there.

What!! What a jerk. You look normally porportioned to me. Everyone varies a bit and nobody here holds up pics and compares bodies and tells people "your hair is really shorter!!" Waist length is still waist length no matter where your waist is and people will congratulate you. Consider yourself lucky, like a lot of short people and people with short torsos do, that these milestones take less time to reach! Usually people get stuck in this "midback abyss" but if your BSL and waist are only a few inches apart you'll get to celebrate sooner!

Nothing wrong with being compared to an elegant bird i'd say. It really depends on how you take these things. I get these comments too, grasshopper, spiderlegs, giraffe, what have you! I dont care, i thing i learned to like my body shape and how to carry myself well. Thats really all i can make out of it. Actually i think it looks great, its mostly short ans stubby built people who come and nag. Doesnt mean you have to listen to this negativity.

I have an opposite to that. Very long torso. Long way from shoulder to bust, from bust to waist, from waist to TBL, from TBL to classic... Everything is LOTS of inches apart. I am tall, well 5'8. But all my lenght is in my torso :( I have 42 inches of hair lenght and I am still FAR away from classic :D I have short legs compared to my torso. Have been hearing opposite things... That I have a hobbit type of a body ;) I would LOVE to have long legs ... We are all shaped in different ways. Only few of people on earth have that amazing proportions where both legs and torso are in a "right" proportions to each other. To me your body looks beautiful. I do hope you will find a way to love it!

Thank you Cat, Minako and Stella.
You've really made my day.
And today I've talked with a friend about this and we couldn't stop laughing when I showed her the hair length chart and said that for my body growing hair from APL to WL is only two months because it's only two inches :bounce::D:D:D

I can't tell if my torso is short or not but I don't have long legs. I've noticed that from that chart what I've been calling BSL is MBL so I'm MBL and I didn't even know lol. I say stick to your own body to measure and if BSL and MBL is the same for you then so be it.

Yes, that chart is a little funny. It shows the BSL way up at the top of the bra band. I always felt it was the bottom of the band. Oh well. My torso is long, so it takes a long time to be patient for my hair to grow longer. I am only 5'4" but knee length is 50" , because the legs are short. :)

I'm the same. My torso seems to never end. I'm about 2 inches away from classic length. I've always understood that classic length is meant to be about half-way down the body, but my hair is definitely longer than half of my height. I can only hope that if I grow to knee that it won't be such a time-consuming process.

I am short overall and also have odd measurements that make it hard to actually find my waist. (36-30-34) I am at knee but it is only about 48" long, which I've seen listed as other people's CL or even BCL. At Hip - TBL I was just starting to do a LWB with ease (technically I could do it earlier but with some pins, which kind of defeats the "lazy" part of it).
(Also, Hip and TBL are only about 2 inches apart on me.)

Charts do not matter: you do.
Everyone is different in shape.
Also, everyone is different in hair.
For example, fine hair can do buns much shorter length, thick hair need more length to loop, a shaved mohoc on one side and the bun will look rather "special" etc... *;O)
One thing from that comment is sure though: everyone has a bum but some individual seem to think it is ok to open it to talk when others prefer use their mouth. *;OP
Meanwhile, I am rather enjoying your voice (many thanks for that by the way) and I am rather looking forward to see your rather nice looking hair do thing that make you smile.

Haha, I also have a 'long' torso and 'short' legs. So yeah, basically that means my hair will have to grow extra inches to reach my goal.
Oh well, good thing we're all different right? The world would be a very boring place if we all looked the same. :) And being a 'stork' is not so bad right? :flower: I'd love to have some killer legs, haha.

I think I could rock my storkish legs if I had more boobs. Then I'd have the figure of Mariah Carey, I think.:rolling::bounce::lol:

I am tall (5'9") and fairly long torso. That is why I set my goal in inches. When I last measured it was 31" and my next goal is 36" aka YOH (yard of hair).

Maybe it's me but that chart is way off for my body. My APL is at her BSL, her MBL is my BSL. I have no clue whether I have a long or short torso, high or low waist, I never understood these things :P

I've noticed this with several hair charts since I have such a short torso, BSL is also MBL on me. Thankfully, I never really cared about my hair length until I reached classic, so I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but I know exactly what you're going through. I love watching TorrinPaige on YouTube and there have been so many times I can't do a style since my hair just isn't long enough even though I technically am at the same milestone she is, but I believe she's also nearly 6 feet tall and I'm only 5'2"...
I've learned by now not to compare my hair length to anyone else unless we're the exact same height, it just makes it easier. The benefit to having a shorter torso, though? You reach goal lengths faster, so that's a bonus.

I'm 5'2" and there is virtually no difference between MBL and waist because of how short my torso is. APL to BSL is pretty close together too.

I think using the bra as a hair length indicator is so stupid; around 50% of the population doesn't even wear them! We should get rid of that and use the shoulder blades instead.
For me, it was took a long time to get from BSL (Bottom of Shoulder blade Length) to waist, but only a few months to get from waist to hip. Hip to tailbone is taking a long time, though.

Yes, everybody is shaped differently - my classic and fingertip lengths are basically the same. I guess I have a long torso and butt but short arms. :)

Let's start by saying that I absolutely hate hair lenght charts. So confusing. One will have different milestones to another and I don't know which I should rely on!! Also, to me hip lenght in that chart is too further down to what I consider hip lenght, waist could be a tiny bit higher up than what it shows on there but, well, don't know if that matters....
Apart from that, I am not tall either (I'm 5'4") and have a small torso. 85 cm (33,5") of hair lenght completely covers my whole back (like hip lenght in that chart, to make a comparison...), in a lot of people 33,5" apparently will barely make a waist lenght, more or less!!!! Go figure.....
So I agree with the other girls, it doesn't matter how many inches the milestones are on you, it just matters that you get where you want to get!

I'm 5'7" but I'm the same height as my 5'2" friends when sitting down. I think it's about 6 inches from the bottom of BSL (I wear thicker bras so I don't really think it would count when hair hit the top) to hip on my body. It's about a mile from hip to classic though -- I think I have a tall butt! And now that I'm at classic, I've been surprised to discover that my hair brushes against my thumbs.
So I can commiserate on the different-from-average proportions. I don't see it as a problem for hair lengths -- I'm just going to grow it as long as I want to anyway!

Yea, I also find those charts amusing. I'm only 5" and have a short torso, so waist is about 28" on me. From BSL to waist is about 3". But compare that to a lot of other people here... everyone is different and is differently shaped

Very amused.
I tried to search men hair length. Aren't they lucky, they have: no hair - short hair - medium hair - long hair. End of.
*Laughter*
Ok, so at least, they are not reading a post and working out puzzled what reaches where and their size utterly amused with the comments giggling at one chart that is actually different than some other chart ...
This is so good!
Yep, we all have our very own chart: our own self (ourselves?) *:OD
*Remembers bras size thickness mention and laugh some more*.

i usually like my body form- i'm tall and have a long torso, and long legs. But for growing hair it's a b***ch LOL It takes forever!
i also have long arms, so classic is shorter as fingertip. I think girls with short torsos are lucky to not have to wait so long...

Classic is thumbs for me, but I think for most people classic would be a few inches above thumb length. Incidentally, it's 9 inches from my fingertips to my knee crease on me. On my 6'2" hubby, it's 6 inches. Big hips are probably partly responsible for that on me!

I just checked and my thumbs are precisely halfway my thighs! Yeah, my arms are freakishly long. Shopping is very annoying, as I have size XS, and there simply is nothing in that size with long enough sleeves. Sigh!
Sorry for the slightly off-topic :)

For me it is just easier going by inches. I am the opposite of you, waist length on me I think is 36 inches, and I'm 5'10 so it takes longer to get to different lengths, so when you go by inches, it is more accurate because someone very short can say they have ankle length hair when it would be knee or thigh length on myself.

I'm opposite with short arms, my fingertips are just below like 1cm classic on me. Shall I cut off my excess miles too long sleeves and send them to you? Sorry to derail. Yep I'm one of those annoyingly short people who get to classic much earlier than my tall fellow hairgrowers. Sorry!:p

Oh wow, thank you for the giggles!!! My goodness, this WOULD be amazing arrangement! And think about the cool artistic combination shirts that could be created with this system! I could use your extra sleeves too, I have hard time finding sleeves long enough, especially as I like mine on the longer side. :hifive:

Yes, I definitely have the short torso issue, too. I think I have to focus more on what lengths look nice proportionally on me, rather than depending on predefined length. My goal is waist length, but in spite of being 5' 7", I suspect with my long legs and short torso, waist length for me is a fair bit short in inches than it is for others.

I am going to use that BSL marker from now on (Bottom of shoulder blade length)! It fits perfectly for me since I don't wear a bra. Thanks spidermom! I agree, we should get rid of that marker and just do the simple change like you did with the shoulder blades. It's much easier that way.
As I have said above, my problem with BSL is that I don't have a bra strap line, I don't wear a bra. I also think it's not a fair body marker because everyone's bra straps are at different places. It's a little too scattered around to be similar on most people who wear bra's.

Well, I think I would rather have the body of a stork than a daschund! Yes, I have a long torso and short legs. At least, that's what my ex husband used to say and he didn't mean it as a compliment, either.
Classic on me could be anything up to 48" (unstretched hair)sigh, or 44" with stretched hair. FTL is also 44" and long sleeves are always too long for me....

Me too. I'm tall with a long neck and long waist so most of my measurements are so far apart. I'm at 32 niches and won't be at waist for another 3 because my hairs wavy/curly.
Classic for me will be between 52 to 55 inches.
There are benefits to being high waisted. Look how quickly you can get to waist.
Like Minoka said, you've just gotta learn to love and accept your body no matter what shape it is

The same with me...very short in my torso, so even though I am almost at waist...I am still limited with my buns.
Once I hit APL there are only a couple of inches to WL .....and then to Hip.
