This was shared by a friend of mine on facebook, and it was just such an intriguing way to make a braid-cage-thing that I wanted to share it. I've seen cage braids that look similar before, but they usually involved pulling at the loops yourself or something such, this seems to be easier, at least to me :)

https://www.facebook.com/MarnixStock/videos/10205403617201705/ (https://www.facebook.com/MarnixStock/videos/10205403617201705/) Beware, the background music is quite loud! The video is public, as far as I can tell.

The end when she pulls the stick out is so cool :D Just..fwoosh.
I admit I actually prefer the look of the braid while the stick is there, maybe with a prettier stick or a longish kogai!

Is there a thread where one can just link these styles one finds? My searches seem to be worded wrong.

Very creative, I love seeing the tricks people come up with!

If you can't find a thread, maybe start one?

I will definitely try this one! :agree:

Oh please show images if any of you do try it! I totally want to see it on different hair types :D

Arctic Now that you mention it.. I might actually :) I'll look around if I can find a thread to bring up from the dead, but otherwise I'll probably start one. If nothing else, a place where I can just put all the things I find in one place rather than starting threads all over.

I definitely want to try this, but I wouldn't call it a cage braid. To me, a cage braid is when hair coming from each side and forming a braid down the back encloses hair that is left down in the back.

Agreed! I think this looks more like a ribcage braid. :eyebrows:

Spidermom That's true, but I've seen several different styles called cage braids.. It gets confusing after a while! Personally I do prefer the look one you talk of, but this one had such a neat "trick" to it :D

I saw this on Facebook too and it blew me away, super cool hairstyle! I must remember to try it someday when my layers have grown out and I have enough length.

YESSS! :happydance: I can do it on myself too!!! Took a second try cuz the beginning start is important or the whole thing flops to one side, and I'm a horrible braid tucker xD so its got a tail even with two claw clips up in there. But it looks so exactly cute. haha *proud* :soapbox:

Oooh so pretty DakarNick! Nicely done! Did it take a long time?

JadedbyEntropy That's gorgeous, it works really well as a half-up as well :D It looks nice with the tail too, a bit of a mystery "how did you get the braid to do that?"-thing! Maybe tie a pretty ribbon on the end? Was it tricky to do on yourself?

SarahLabyrinth Does the link simply not open at all or does it stop working when you try to link it? That's odd...

Weeird. Does it work to copy and paste it?

Or if I put it here again, is it the same?

Oh, I really like this. I've done cage braids before on myself but they're kind off hit or miss. I'll see if I find time this weekend to try this.

OMG; I wish I had a camera. I always want to put my personal twist on styles other people have shown me, so what I did with this was tuck the braided tail under the elastic, then curve the top up over the hair tie and pin it to my head, then pin the bottom down. It's like a bun, but a beautifully big and intricate-looking bun. I have got to get a camera!

I wanna see that!

Lolino doing it as a full-up (?) was too difficult, but as a half up it set it much higher on my head and I could watch it in the mirror. Braiding in view instead of down my own back made the loops smaller and more woven looking than the original, but it was much easier having an idea of which strand goes where! My arms about fell asleep, but it wasn't as hard. haha
Doing my entire pony would need a longer hairstick as well. So start out with a long one so it doesn't slide around and drop loops by mistake.

I have a set of chopsticks, one of which was perfect for this.
