View Full Version : How to wear short hair up?

Hello everyone! I'm new around here after being a lurker for a little while, so please excuse any mistakes on my part! My hair is about 1 inch above my shoulders when dry, and the last 3 inches of it are leftover from a disastrous bleaching incident in mid-February 2014. The ends are super damaged and awful, and I want to protect them from getting worse while I wait for them to grow out and be cut off and hide them from view because it's really bad (to me). Unfortunately my hair is too short now for all the basic braids and buns that I used to put it in before I cut it, and I don't know what to do with it.
Does anyone have any suggestions or tutorials or anything that would work? Any and all help is appreciated!

Can you put it up in a tiny twist with a claw clip?

French and dutch braids should still work, they'll just have very short tails.

All I can manage is a peacock twist. (I twist my hair and claw clip it up the best I can)

Hello bambam.

Yes, I was about to advise you the same thing as butter52. It's an easy and comfortable protective hairdo: you just take all your hair in your hand, like if you want to do a pony tail, give it a twist, then put it up and claw-clip it behind your head, like a baby French twist^^

Here is how it looked on me when I was a little shorter than APL :

I'm not too sure you can see the picture yet, though. But you'll figure out by looking here : http://www.wikihow.com/Put-Your-Hair-Up-with-a-Jaw-Clip

There is another very nice way : with a headscarf. You attach the headscarf around your head, above your hair. Then you just roll your side hair and nape hair around the headscarf and tuck it under the cloth. I saw a girl with a lovely similar bandana hair tuck the other day. She told me her hair was just shoulder length. It was so lovely ! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/20899585747140819/

Hope this will give you new ideas !

several mini buns like bantu knots, or cinnabuns, but at least 4 of them, and more if your hair is thicker. I used to do this with hair shorter than shoulder.

I have short hair too. The back has gotten long enough to put in a (wimpy) ponytail, so I do that and then put a clip over it. Then, I pin the shorter front pieces back in a kind of pincurl, one on each side, and secure with bobby pins. It looks vaguely retro and I get compliments on it for some reason, haha.

Hi there and welcome!

This thread might have some styles that work at your length: Show your updos (for BSL and shorter) (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=123749)

Ahhh thank you everyone for your suggestions! I will definitely try the claw twisty thing, my hair should be long enough to attempt it. And I like the idea of multiple buns, because I love buns and was sad when I cut my hair and realized my hair's too short for big one. yogagirl, that thread seems is golden and hopefully I'll get some ideas there.
Thanks everyone!

Vote for the peacock twist here as well. I wore that style from shoulder/APL on to waist/hip (folded it under as it grew longer). It's an awesome protective style!
