I decided to finally invest into a silk pillowcase. I am still dizzy from the price a bit, but also from the lack of availability of the product. Do you have a silk pillowcase? If yes, where did you buy it? What is a good price to pay? What exactly do I need to look for in a good one?
Thank you so much in advance:o

There are cheap ones on Amazon! I bought a satin pillowcase for $7 about six months ago.

I recommend Adorabellababy on etsy :) You pay for what you get and as an added bonus she is a lovely person :)

I use a satin pillowcase. Got them on clearance at Macy's for $5. Ugly color, but who cares?

Buying stuff like that locally is usually pretty cheap, but I don't know about availability in the Netherlands... If you have any stores like Sally's Beauty Supply or stores with big sections dedicated to haircare, I'd look for them there.
Alternatively, you could just wrap silk scarves around your pillows, too. ;)

I made mine using silk and cotton. Cotton for the underside. This way I was able to make two and I hand stitched them.

I made mine. It only requires very basic sewing skills.
A good one will be made of SILK SATIN, like the ones in the adorabellababy shop. A polyester satin pillowcase might make your head sweaty, while one made of silk that isn't a satin weave won't be as hair-friendly. Silk charmeuse is good if you want to make your own or bribe a friend who sews to make one for you.

Oh ladies thank you for the kind answers! I didn't think satin would would too!: ) that's great news! Does it have the same effect as silk? I know that silk is from the silkworms, and satin is a method of weaving, so I always get a bit confused.
I am just about to order some bed sheets, and I found satin for a good price, so I am doubting if it really is better than the normal cotton.
I was thinking about making my own, buying a sewing machine is long overdue...

I sewed my own! are you crafty at all? It was easy just a few straight lines, I even sewed a bit of lace to the end so I could feel extra fancy

I like to believe so!: ) I just didn't think about it because the material itself is super expensive, about the same price as the pillowcase itself.

Personally, I hate polyester satin on my face and went with a poly satin sleep bonnet instead (which you can find at Walmart, Walgreen's, and lots of places in the ethnic haircare area). But if I wanted silk, I'd probably go with Dharma trading (http://www.dharmatrading.com/clothing/silk-charmeuse-pillowcase.html?lnav=clothing.html), purely based on price.

I've purchased some silk goods from silkhairdesigns on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/silkhairdesigns) and the quality was right up there with adorabellababy.... same mulberry charmeuse silk. Her prices look about the same, sometimes she has sales too or whatever. What got me buying from her was because she makes a narrower silk scrunchie (https://www.etsy.com/listing/151906197/silk-hair-scrunchies-2-for-1800?ref=shop_home_active_9) which I really like. It's a little less floofy (Kimmie Gibbler) than most scrunchies. I wear these ones in public. :p
Anyhow, sorry to derail the thread from pillowcases.... but just wanted to provide another option. ;)

I don't think mine is actual silk. The point is to get silky fabric that your hair will not catch on. There may be slightly better results from using the real deal but I think anything that doesn't cause friction will do

Do the Etsy sellers ship to NL? Etsy is a bit confusing:/

I second Dharma Trading. I haven't bought a pillowcase from there, although I might (I'll either order one or make one using leftover silk charmeuse from my wedding dress). I've gotten several other silk items and fabric from there, though, and I've always liked what I got from them. Plus, if you're artsy, you can get paints and dyes and make it is intersting as you like!

yes, it looks like both silkhairdesigns and adorabellababy ship internationally. Go to the "Shipping & Policies" Tab to the right of "Item Details" and use the pull down menu to select your country. Hope this helps :)

I have always slept on a satin pillowcase (from Sally Beauty Supply or elsewhere on sale) , but I also sleep in a silk or satin scarf to contain my hair and to keep it out of my night cream--stretching washes, you know...... I buy inexpensive ($1 or less....) big silk or satin scarves from thrifts or yard sales, sew them into a tube ( in half lengthwise), and then sew a thin casing to run a piece of ribbon through to gather and tie it. It works great and is comfortable enough that I often wear it around the house and yard to give my scalp a break from updos. I have no sewing skills what so ever and am able to make them in just a few minutes. My son says I look like a cross between a hippie and a nun.

I had a polyester satin duvet cover, sheet and pillow case set. The pillowcases are fine. The quilt cover was okay for a while, sheet was bloody awful. Became bobbly very quickly from being moved around on mostly at the bottom where feet go, which was very uncomfortable. Not strictly hair related, but I just thought I'd throw that out there. think money is better spent on a higher quality pillowcase, than a cheaper whole bed set. Don't mind polyester satin pillow cases though, I don't find them sweaty.

I used a satin nightgown as a pillowcase until recently. Now I just use it to wrap around my head!

I made it. I went to Joann fabric and bought bought 3/4 yard of satin on sale for $5 or something like that and sewed two seams in it, leaving the selvage as the part that was unsewn. there was extra so I made a 'pillowcase' to cover the headrest in my car too so I can lean my head back when i'm driving and not worry.
theres instructions on how to make a pillow case online, if you can thread your sewing machine, you can do it, you don't need to have a pattern or cut anything out or anything. YOu don't even have to sew straight. IN fact, you don't even go to a fabric store, they sell fabric on ebay, joann.com and all over the place online.

I bought mine in a householdstore thats traditionally german and has bedsheets that are probably older than i am in stock, lol. I recently looked on ebay and didnt find anything i like, just plain black, brown or white. It really seems to be not popular at all.
I would recommend just buying the silk and have it done by a tailor. They can probably fix one in under ten minutes.

It seems like I need an odd pillowcase size, like 26 x 26 (65cm x 65cm) - is that odd?

I agree, can't deal with unatural fabrics so close to my face all night. I'd make my own silk pillowcases if I wanted to. Right now I've got some 100% cotton satiny bed linen. I have too much creams and oils that rub off to be dealing with silk all the time. The oils and creams aren't a choice, it's an unavoidable part of life when you have a skin condition.

Most US pillows are rectangular. Many of the ones I've seen in Europe are big squares like yours. I'd just chalk it up to regional differences, but it might make it harder to source a pillowcase from the US.

I just bought a simple silk scarf off of Ebay, and sewed two sides together to slide over my pillow. I don't like the satin, as it is synthetic. The silk is much better for letting the air circulate.

I'd like to highly recommend the Dharma Trading silk charmeuse pillowcase below.
http://www.dharmatrading.com/clothing/silk-charmeuse-pillowcase.html
I work very closely with the textiles industry and this is one of the best fabrics you can purchase. The weave of the fabric is just as important as the fiber/yarn used and charmeuse is a very strong and substantial weave, whereas other silk pillowcases use cheap weaves resulting in thin and weak fabric. IMO this is the best value you can get for a silk pillowcase. I personally own about a dozen silk pieces from Dharma, including nightgowns and silk scarves. Also note that satin is not a fiber, but rather one of the cheaper weaves, and it can be made from a variety of fibers such as cotton, poly, and silk.

Does anyone just use a satin bonnet to sleep in? Is it better to buy the pillow case or will a bonnet work fine?

I use a satin bonnet because it keeps my hair out of the way and it's not rubbing on my cotton sheets, but it just depends on your personal preference. I used a satin pillowcase for years and while it was better than a rougher material, I still had tangles if I slept with my hair down.

I bought a satint bonnet called "Donna's satin sleep cap", but it doesn't look very satin like to me, in terms of it being shiny, though it is soft. Do you think this would be fine? It is SO difficult to find a satin bonnet in my city! I drove around for 3 hours yesterday trying to find one. :(

I have some silk satin fabric waiting to transform into pillowcase and/or bonnet. Years ago I had set of two pillowcases and a duvet cover, made from polyester satin. They looked nice and luxurious but I absolutely HATED them. They were static af, they were slippery and they didn't breathe at all and I was always sweating. No more polyester for me, I prefer silk satin.
And psst: Satin is not fiber or material, it is type of weave, and two most common fibers it is made from are silk (which is natural fiber made from cocoons of silk larvae) and polyester (synthetic fiber prone to static) ;)
