My go-to casual hairstyle is a low, looped pony-tail similar to this - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v160/ElectricPineapple/spring_summer_2015_trendy_ponytails_hairstyles_Rol and_Mouret1_zpstd9i6rhf.jpg

But after a few hours it starts looking like this -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v160/ElectricPineapple/19-low-ponytail-creatures-of-the-wind-h724_zpsactci0xn.jpg

That said, I really like this low style on my face shape the best - especially how it fans out to the sides slightly and creates more of a balanced/voluminous look than just a low tight bun would.

Does anyone have any ideas for simple hairstyles to do that would last longer and look more polished than this one, but have a similar overall look?

I've tried low chignon styles like this one - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v160/ElectricPineapple/9657e174a6d025fd7216f39baf66ebe22350c97c_zpsoajp47 4y.jpg
but I just can't figure out how to get the weight of my hair to secure with clips and bobby-pins. It takes me way to long just to get it clipped up, and still ends up falling down eventually.

Hmm, you could loop and tuck your ponytail with a topsytail thingy. I think that would keep it more in place and still it can fan out a bit.

I actually also have something in mind i've seen on pinterest. Kind of easier to show then to explain.

Really cool style, Minako!

Berúthiel that syle is the Ominous Messy Bun, which is not really a protective style (your ends are rubbing against your clothes and they're are ripped by the ponytail holder), so I suggest you to check out this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcSaBWbBYug) of the lovely Torrin Paige for other go-to hairstyles. :)

Something pretty easy to do and it plays on the "tuck" idea is this Late Victorian Triple Braided Tuck: https://locksofelegance.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/dscn4968.jpg
It works better on shorter hair: https://locksofelegance.wordpress.com/2013/04/04/late-victorian-triple-braided-tuck/
On longer hair, it looks more elongated, like a looped ponytail, like in this tutorial by Torrinpaige: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N7_7_NlnF0

Yeah, i think its an easy to do style and the result looks much more complicated and time consuming. its as secure as a bun but allows to show texture and movement. Also i think it could be nice to braid the last part that splits in half and wraps around. If most of you havent seen it before we need a name for it, so it wont disappear.
