I'm looking at hairstyles that I can wear to a wedding since I'll be going to one in two months time. It's going to be a beach wedding. So far I've come up with some sort of bun with ornaments. Note I'm a minimalist and that I don't use manufactured styling products due to allergy problems. I want something simple yet elegant that can be achieved with just my usual coconut/olive oil maybe a hair band , hair pins or ornamental comb. Since I'm a kinky curly head styles that work for this hair type would be much appreciated.

How are your braiding skills?

Edit:
Nice meet you!

How are your braiding skills?

I've been braiding my own hair since I was 4/5 years of age so I'd say I'm quite competent.

I love the look of a jumbo twist updo

Oooh, beach wedding! Sounds amazing! And applauds (sp?) to starting to look for ideas early on! There might be some winds, so the style needs to be relatively stable so your hair is not flying on your face all the time.

I am not very familiar with kinky curly hair styling, but I love the kind of style one of our member did recently for bride's made role. I think it would work for all hairtypes. She made french rope braids on both sides of the head and combined them in a low bun at the back, and had a nice flexi-8 as a decoration. It was very simple and elegant looking. The braids don't have to be twists/rope braids, they can be any kind of french-type braids that you like.

I also suggested her to do a low bun with deep side part, and on the parted side, to make 3 (or what ever number works) "flowers". The flowers are coiled braids but they look really complex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfaRPoOiCq8 I imagive it would look cool on kinky hair, like a rose! You'll probably need to stretch your hair firts a bit when it dries. You have a thick hair, so I think these kinds of decorative elements made from hair might look amazing - my own hair couldn't handle them. I see in my minds eye how elegant it would look, to have 3 of these rosettes/flowers on the side parted side, low simple bun and otherwise the style would be low-key in a very striking way.

What kind of styles you like and feel comfortable in the most?

DS had a beach wedding and I was *very happy* to be wearing a sunhat. You might want to consider if that is what you'll be doing also. That would certainly change what type of bun/updo you choose. ;)

You might do a crown braid with decorative pins or a comb.

I usually put my hair back into one or I'd do some flat twists. I have seen a flat twist version of a crown braid that I haven't tried as yet. I'm not sure if I'll have room to pack a hat since the wedding is not in the UK and I know I have limited baggage space on my booked flight.

I've seen some youtube videos that may help. These are two strand flat twists and cornrows.

Here's a few.

What about french twist with a nice comb? Pretty, classy and minimalist.

You have a great taste, Hairkay!

I liked all 3 bun styles, but especially these two:

The second style from this video looks really nice! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNpvc-FPTjY

This is gorgeous! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC38WQxPEZs
(This is also nice, but I liked the above more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpliBqDRGzI)

This is really elegant! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw96IKchH6c

This too was lovely! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC4KTfoIE-Y

All of the ones you posted were extremely pretty and would be more than suitable to the wedding! I guess the question is, which would make YOU feel the most beautiful! :)

Thanks Artic,

I'll be away for a week for the wedding so maybe I could pick 3/4 and wear them on the holiday. I thought the first bun was cute, simple and effective not even a hairpin needed.

It's time to get ready to go. I'm taking a few scrunchies and hair pins. I thought about other decorations but since I don't like any I think I'll look for some local fresh cut flowers to adorn my hair. I'm going prepared with hayfever meds so I'll be fine (I hope).
