I really hope this topic hasn't already been up. I am new here and couldn't find anything about it in any case.

What I'm basically wondering is how do I measure my hair length correctly?
In the LHC profile settings, it says you should type in your length "as measured from your front hairline, over your head and down your back".
I take that to mean I'm supposed to measure from my forehead and down my back, but that seems odd to me.

So how do you do it? An illustration would be particularly welcome. :)

Thanks!

I believe the way most people measure their hair this way :). From the front hairline back over your head, down your back and to the ends. Might be an idea to get someone to give you a hand because it can be tricky to both hold the tape still and take the measurements, especially if your hair is very long :).

In this video you can see how most people measure their hair. Length measuring starts at 1:00 :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWRJ57j1AyI

Lay the measuring tape so that the tip sits against your hairline and centre front. Let the tape run along your head (like a centre parting) then down from your crown down your back.

Yes, it seems odd because it essentially adds a lot of length. However, it's much, much easier to get consistent measurements than if you measured from the crown. Most people are interested in measurements as a way of monitoring growth rather than an absolute number. You can't monitor growth if your measurements are inconsistent.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me! :)

I have near SL hair, so I measure two ways to check growth. I take a small piece just in front of my ear and hold a tape measure and take a picture for my own reference. It seems to be pretty accurate. For my spreadsheet, and general growth tracking, I measure from where my hairline starts on my forehead back down to the end of the growth.

personally i measure from the back of my head hair line down. really anyway you measure is fine if it works for you. just do it the same way every time.

Hmm... I always thought you had to literally take a strand and measure its length. My hair is also layered, so i've been very confused about how to measure.

I always measure from my hairline down. Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing it wrong though, my measurements never line up with the length in inches charts. Of course I'm also about 7" taller than most :/

Yeah, there is no universal length for body markers because everyone's body markers are different. I'm 5'2" with tall shoulders (big gap from shoulder to apl) but a very short torso (bsl to hip is only about 3 inches) and very long legs (I often don't even need petite pant lengths) so my measurements are all over the place.

The method for hair measurement really doesn't matter, as long as you do it consistently. That's why front hairline is so common: it's easy to find the same place for the 0 mark on the measuring tape in the mirror every time (especially if you have a widow's peak or a freckle that you can line it up to) instead of relying on feeling for the crown or nape hairline. And I can't imagine how frustrating measuring an individual hair would be. Sheds aren't always going to be as long as the rest of the hair, because of the rest period before shedding, and I'd hate to pluck one and risk damaging the follicle. shudder:

I get different numbers every time.. But the length is very much more if measure my hair like in the video. I found this online http://fashioninfographics.com/post/55733134185/a-visual-guide-to-hair-length, and 26" -Lower back looks already like waist to me. What to you think?

And sorry about my english. Hope you understood.

In order to get consistent measurements *every* time, you really need to measure from your forehead through to the back of your head, that's the LHC way, and that's what everybody's measurements mean. There's no sense in doing it differently, IMMHO. I have stopped measuring though, much too much of an ordeal for me (disabled). My hair is now measured relative to milestones / body markers. Like 4 inches off of classic, or something like that. And I keep "name" indicators in my profile like (classic/TBL etc.) Much easier.

Thank you for answer. I understand it now.

Interesting! I am new here and was wondering about this too. Extra interesting for me to go form the forehead hairline, as I have a bit of a Widow's peak! :)

I have a small Widow's peak as well, and it's an easy point to stick my measuring tape on, well used to be because I no longer (have to) measure. I'm on my goal length.

I am so glad I found this post, I have been measuring my hair from the nape down, I can feel as if i’m going crazy because I always get a different number (25 - 27 inches). Thankfully, I made a t-shirt to track my growth, I used this new method right now and my hair is 34 inches (it touches my tailbone), funny enough this was my next goal, lol.
