I am into the 1940s lately and have been doing curler sets and wearing my grandma's scarves with rolled bangs, big pin curls, or victory rolls. I tried '30s finger waves today. They failed, so I went with the '40s again: http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt170/naturallyfrizzy/14241165234781.jpg

I'll get my daughter to try victory rolls on my hair again. (It didn't look right the first time she tried it, but we can give it another shot.) If they work this time, I'll post a pic here. She can get her own hair to do victory rolls just fine; we're not sure why it failed on mine, LOL.

ETA: To the OP, your hair looks just beautiful!

Thank you! I have heard that teasing and hairspray help for victory rolls, but I know we don't all like to do so. I don't mind; I keep sort of a long middy cut and the front layers get trimmed often enough that it keeps damage at bay.

Would the Southern Twist be a vintage updo? Say, somewhere from 1910 - 1930's? I don't know for sure, maybe someone can correct me on this, but it certainly has that kind of 'feel' to it to me...

Ooh, I love all the pictures in this thread!!

Me, too! Everyone looks super!
Great idea for a thread!

When I was younger I was mystified at vintage pictures and illustrations of updos.

Being fine and thin, there was no way I ever had enough hair to pull them off. I still don't, lol!

I could never figure out how people did them. I know now that everyones hair is very different, of course, but as a kid it was just amazed.

My hair was so straight it couldn't hold as set for more than an hour at best, too.
I tried, my mom tried, but it was always a fruitless effort, pretty much.
I can't imagine ever being able to pull off these styles if I had to.

These pictures are all very impressive to me!

Thanks for sharing them, Id love to see more!

Sarahlabyrinth it looks vintage enough for me, and very pretty at that!

CurlyCap I love those rolled up bangs!

AmberLouise wow! The victory rolls are perfect! And the betty bangs! Do you dress in rockabilly style by any change?

I have only couple of photos of mine, I usually go for vintage inspired rather than go all the way. These are several years old too, but I don't have any newer:

Let me think....I did 7 sponge curlers, 3 on each side (easier to sleep) and 1 kind of up top on the right, the wider side of my left-hand part. I did brush it out after taking them out, though I don't always. I put it up with a scrunchie and lots of good grips pins, just kind of pinning curls wherever. The bangs got that curve from 3 pin curls and lots of brushing out. I pinned the scarf in place with the clear good grips. I get those at Sally Beauty.

hananabread no I haven't tried one, and I fear I might not have enough hair to cover it. BUT I can warmly recommend a hair styling product called hair powder (sometimes texturizing powder), it's like teasing in a bottle without teasing or damage. Gives superb grip and volume! I'm not sure if you do this already spirals, try putting the hair you are trying to roll into a pin curl a couple of hours before. I find it makes rolling much easier because your hair will already want to go in that direction.

That's a good idea. If I know the night before that I want them, I can pin curl overnight.

mermaid lullaby, if you have any wave at all, you can comb your hair back, then take the heel of your hand and push forward from the crown. Any waves you have will bump up and you can use them as a guide. Otherwise, starting with really wet hair helps you to force the waves in. I sleep with the clips in or blowdry if I do it the day of. I'm ok with blowdrying the front of my hair because it gets cut regularly.

Anyone tried brushing out the curls for the vintage look? Do you find it damaging? Does it work for only pincurls, or could it be used for other heatless (or heatstyled) curls? What kind of brush is best? Any tips? I'm a noob on this styling method. :) I know you are supposed to brush against your hand and that it looks frizzy first before the pattern emerges. That's about it :)

I LOVE brushing out curls for that real vintage look! Brushing through the curls disappears the ringlets and brings all the curls together so you get really big, really soft looking all over curl. It also really helps with grip for victory rolls/barrel rolls. I general comb through carefully with a wide tooth comb first and then brush through with my tangle teaser. I don't use hair spray until I've completed my whole style and even then only just a touch.

Brushed out pin curls were my favorite around BSL-MBL, but I recently tried it with almost BCL and my curls fell quite quickly. One of these days I plan to experiment with pin curling just the bottom half of my hair somehow. There's just too much length and in my experience vintage styles more diffcult with waist and beyond hair.

Things you'll want to watch out for:
Inserting and removing bobby pins- do so slowly and carefully so you're not ripping individual strands of hair
make SURE your curls are all completely dry and (if you blow dry them) cool.

This is the best photo I can find of brushed out curls. Anyone else brush out their curls?

Excellent point to detangle first, the tutorials I've seen often make me cringe when bush through the tangly mass with round brush.

Even if I'm not doing a vintage style I brush mine out. I detangle, brush with a plastic brush, and then BBB. I spray the boar bristles lightly with oil first. I like my natural curls, but prefer a wavy look. It looks longer, too, which is a bonus.

When I used to do headband curls a lot (before they stopped working, sigh), sometimes I would brush out the curls. It worked quite well, for a softer vintage-y look. It looked particularly good when I did big, brushed out headband curls for my femme fatale Halloween costume.

Thank you! I wish I could remember how I pinned the back. I do know that it was some kind of bun on top of the hair, actually. I guess Lady Edith's style is the most similar to what I did. I just have to play with it. I got some roller pins last night because my hair laughs at bob pins and good grips don't grip my scalp hair.

OK, so I know I'm totally photobombing my own thread, but I can't help it; I'm just so excited about vintage styles now. Here's what I did today after a set using wave clips, pin curls, and sponge rollers:

Entangled, since you have fairly straight hair, you'll do it differently than I do. (I follow my own wave pattern.) Here is a vid on how to do them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gUt1vYaj38 I like that she does't do a curl set first, because that's extra work. For the sponge curlers I like to take the plastic pieces out and put each sponge in a knee-high stocking, roll up, and tie like a rag curl. I put a little claw clip on it to hold while I tie, and then slip the clip out. I did a curl set with 3/4" rollers the other night and got this without doing any finger waves: http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt170/naturallyfrizzy/pincurlpillowcurlset.jpg Sorry for the blurrieness; I just snapped a pic really fast to send to a friend. Anyway, the wave came out of pincurls in the front. So that's an option. It's easy if you roll the hair on a lipgloss or some kind of tube, slip it off, lay it flat, and put a bobby pin on it. I can't do it on my finger.

For a twenties look I pin it into a very low bun or a faux bob. Here's another great '20s look that you could do on a simple roller set without the bother of making finger waves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sNKYerUYo0 It reminds me of Gloria Swanson: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/46/55/45/465545d2151c6b93cd8a1d8643fe1c7d.jpg

Oh Spirals, your fingerwaves look so nice and sleek. Mine always end up frizzy. Do you use a special creme? Those metal clips are my nightmare, I just can't sleep with those on.
I have seen a tutorial to get non authentic fingerwaves by simply braiding the hair, but I seem to keep doing it wrong, because I don't get results.

Susan, those are the most gorgeous rolls I have ever seen! Wow!

Yarrow, I'm not sure what I did, but I probably used gel. The one I just ran out of had castor oil in it. I usually use an oil mist and hairspray after styling. If you can't do the clips, you can set pincurls in rows that alternate direction. The curls will interrupt each other, creating a wave. Think of what would happen if you curled one strand with a curling iron over, the next under, the next over, and so on.

Thanks, Spirals, and Yarrow! I don't wear victory rolls regularly anymore-- the pincurl sets don't dry properly now that my hair is longer--, but am inclined to twist some up for military holidays: Veterans' Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, that sort of thing. Usually, I bun the back or wear it down, and the rolled front carries the look.

@ Spirals: your finger waves are to die for! Soooo classy! I've never been able to make those work.

@ Caraid: I put in a similiar request in another thread: share how you made your siggy roll?

spirals
July 9th, 2015, 09:29 PM
Thanks, Susan! You really need both the pinchy wave clips and the alligator clips to make those, the ones that look like marcel waves. It does help to have natural wave. On the right side I can push it up and catch the waves with a clip, though that doesn't always work. On the left side I have to force the waves in. I use both gel and hairspray to hold those suckers.

this one is similar, but I was really trying to make it look like scarlet o'hara's hair from gone with the wind!

That is actually what I thought of when I saw the picture, and then I saw that you wrote this! (It is similar to what my past attempts at a Gibson tuck have come out like-- because I have way too much hair to just wrap it through a couple times and have it all be used up, but mine don't look that nice, in part 'cause my hair is stick-straight. I call it a "log bun."

I've been having a go at the "eternal roll" (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCwQFjAEahUKEwiX09Kq-oHHAhUHFJIKHchhBeM&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffreelancersfashion.blogspot.com%2 F2011%2F02%2Fhairdos-7-eternal-roll.html&ei=t5-5VdebGoeoyATIw5WYDg&usg=AFQjCNHpWkiSYdb-vffxGCpvtR9_6YVF8w&sig2=KDA_oGfqmRvtWP8Y1rD8SQ) lately. But I'm trying to make it look less messy (esp. since my hair is so stringy, so it looks very piece-y at the rolled part, and not nice), and also trying to get used to the look, as it makes my head look twice as large and I feel like I look more like the Bride of Frankenstein than a nice Victorian/whatever girl (mine comes out bigger than hers in the link).

Some of these are quite old and some are (quite obviously!) from a fun photo shoot thingy I did with a friend but it's pretty much how I do my hair most days - curls with rolls or, because I have the bangs for insta-retro, I'll just bung in a flower or 2!

Apologies for so many photos - I got a bit over excited finding a retro hair thread as it's a passion of mine!!

With regards to brushing out curls, I'd very highly recommend looking up Lisa Freemont Street on Youtube. She does amazing vintage hair tutorials with a really in depth tutorial on how to set pincurls and how to brush out properly.

Just looked back through every post and twit twoo ladies! You're a mighty gorgeous bunch! X

Rocky those are gorgeous!

Here are a couple of my attempts from a few months ago-
http://s221.photobucket.com/user/paganrosemama/media/FB_IMG_13765116894261196.jpg.html
http://s221.photobucket.com/user/paganrosemama/media/20141221_131638.jpg.html?sort=3&o=6

Both are overnight wet sets with plenty of setting lotion, and barely brushing out the curls- otherwise I loose the curl easily.
With wet sets I get curls to last all the first day and waves the second. Sometimes if I repin the curls at night I will actually get a second day of loose curls.

I've been under the impression that no one had long hair or did not wear it below shoulder during the Golden Era. I've searched for " '30s braided hairstyles" and " '40s braided updo" and such and never really found anything. Then I entered the simple " '30s braids" and got a jackpot. Here's one: http://40.media.tumblr.com/c827d2630d15db8febf8165484620ace/tumblr_nzr3ftmxDf1rfw2x6o1_400.jpg

What's weird about this time is that mine turned out better than if I'd used clips. They simply weren't available, as they were on Friend's head. So I used my Caruso rollers--medium, I think--and rolled them in the same direction (from part toward ear), but with the tail either winding toward my face or toward the back of my head, the way clockwise and counter-clockwise pin curls work. I alternated them to create a wave. All I had to do was brush it out.

There's a completely self-taught lady on youtube called Lisa Freemont Street. I learned it all from her and A Vintage Vanity. I believe you can do it! The big part of it is learning rolling patterns. Most of the stuff I do is essentially foam rollers (overnight set or the Caruso steam setter). I can do pin curls, but I don't because it's just so difficult with carpal tunnel. So I fall back on the spongies. The basic method is just rolling the front and perimeter of your hair because you want a flat crown for anything from '20s-'40s.

I'm going to look into those more! I haven't had much luck with typical pincurls and finger waves, mainly because my hair is so fine and malleable that it almost holds shapes and kinks too much, if that makes sense. It seems like you have naturally wavy/curly hair to work with, how to you like it for vintage styling?

spirals
April 28th, 2016, 12:44 AM
I prefer created curls to my own. I guess they look authentic. My hair is kind of coarse so I have trouble getting it on the curler but it really takes a set well, even without setting lotion. I guess that's the natural curl? If it's humid it will revert to my natural texture, though. :(

Lovely style, spirals! Thanks! It was more comfortable to sleep in than usual: the lengths were in twin rope braids with long tails set on sponge rag curlers. That made the brush-out easier, too. The hard part was getting the pin curls to sit right. It took 3 tries to get it right. I think it's because I pulled a lot of hair into that feature; they were too thick.

Those are beautiful. I'm going to use those as inspiration; I have my own 1920s/1930s themed event to go to this month! I bet they can be done without heat styling (pin curls maybe?)

enting
May 3rd, 2016, 10:21 PM
Aren't they just? :)
Seems to me that heatless curls should work. I suppose how long they stay would depend on how well your hair takes a curl :) The first one looks like the hair is divided and then simply coiled and coiled around, only instead of pinning the hair in a circle like a cinnabun, it's coiled back and forth, like a supercoil, I think.

spirals
May 3rd, 2016, 10:24 PM
Pin curls are hard to do on long hair. I'd use sponge curlers, the 1/2" or 3/4" ones. After you take the curlers out you can mold the waves up top with duckbill clips. (Brush the curls out and the wave pattern will appear.) Just leave the clips in for 20 minutes or so. Hairspray it while the clips are in if you want.

Here's a '20s style that looks modern (or '70s, even--there was a '20s/'30s revival in the early '70s): http://www.1920s-fashion-and-music.com/images/polanegri-chignon.jpg

You wouldn't even have to bother curling it for this: https://fascinationstreetvintage.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/03.jpg?w=736

For this just make finger waves with the clips and do a low bun: http://images.fandango.com/images/fandangoblog/LilyAbbey923F.jpg

Pretty much any low bun that covers the ears paired with the right makeup will work: http://images.delcampe.com/img_large/auction/000/131/261/949_001.jpg

It would've looked cooler without the stick and with more pincurls in the back, but I couldn't be bothered! :) (My hair is straight and slippy. Pins don't work very well. I teased and sprayed the front section, then rolled, put in 2 pins, and sprayed some more. It would never stay, otherwise.)
It's a pha bun base, with the tail sticking out. I made a pincurl from the tail, and amazingly, both pins were sort of hidden and held! Stuck in the flower clip because I wanted to. :wigtongue

Kiiruna this could be from 1940s - not sure if the hair style is historically accurate to fourties (all I know that it's very nice vintage-y look! I'm not very good telling which vintage decade had which hair styles) but what I meant is the composition, tones and pose.

I've posted these before on another thread but they're the only ones I have right now.
They're from last week or the one before that, I slept with velcro rollers and brushed them out, making a C in the air with the brush, and they ate up a lot of length. They turned out really fluffy and soft, but we're in the middle of fall here, which basically means the weather is a surprise for about 3 or 4 months, so the winds just tore it apart.

Your curls look really nice. I saw this tutorial on YouTube where this girl rolled her hair on curlers, then slid the curlers out sideways and then tied the curl with a rag. Kind of like a barrel curl just with rags or strings instead of pins. I ve been trying it, it's not that easy for me but it's really nice for sleeping. I wish I would have favourited the tutorial though. I just can't find it again.

Thank you, shrinkingviolet! I did the standard pin up pin curl pattern, like this:

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/3e/8d/48/3e8d48bc38f5c419716b6bfa876caa81.jpg

Yarrow, it's a way to make the curls align better and form prettier, integrated waves! I'll brush in an inward C motion on each side so they'll curl to the "inside". It's kind of hard to explain but it's really simple and makes up for the sleekest result.

+ one blooper in colour

Not as frizzy as previous one, but no amount of vigorous brushing can't turn those curls to waves.

Kiiruna: Nice job with the set! (I liked the first one too, but didn't comment. :) )

I stopped pincurl setting my hair around BSL because it go to be too much trouble. My straight hair fought it: the ends wanted to pop out of the roll. I have some fuzzy pics in my album of when I used to do it! I never used a set pattern, just pinned them up on top of each other, slept in it, and brushed them around my hand in the morning. They always came out nice. :)

Now, I favor Torrin Paige's "breaker bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9uWC5zQ8NQ)" variation. She leaves a front section out, for a victory roll, bumper bangs, suicide roll, whatever; buns the back with the tail out, and uses the tail to make a few rolls around the bun. It probably isn't super authentic, but has a retro look that I like. :)

FWIW: I have about half the volume of Torrin's hair, so I tease the front section. That girl has a lot of hair!

I just wanted to throw out a little challenge: a '60s bouffant. I know it's possible without a lot of teasing. It could be a ponytail or french seam or whatever, as long as there's volume at the crown. I am going to try to do it sometime this week, depending on my scalp's needs, as I can't do it on freshly-washed, curly hair. Let's see what we can do!

I just wanted to post this here to remind myself that vintage hair doesn't always have to be so "done": https://mugshotsandmiscellaneous.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/a-lovely-face/#more-397 Lots of times when I'm rushed I have a hint of wave like that (come by it naturally if I comb out my curls) and a simple bun. I really like that look as much as more defined finger waves. This lady is very, very pretty. Love the shape of her eyes and lips.

Yeah, everyday women didn't always have time to set up polished smooth pin curl sets - most of the authentic vintage hairstyles are frizzy and almost a little bit wild looking :D
My hair and vintage styles don't do very well together... my hair likes to lay flat rather than go poof, and curls like to just... slip away and die.

edit: found this beautiful video that shows how "real women" looked like in the past. https://youtu.be/t__RhUyZMDM
One thing that bugs me in the vintage/pin-up -scene are people who are saying things like "I wish I lived back then" and "I was born in the wrong decade", because all they're seeing are the glamorous Hollywood ladies. The truth is, of course, that life back then was not all style and glamour.

Definitely some good points here! I think often when people say "I was born in the wrong decade" it's just because they're looking at one narrow aspect of that era (eg. the fashion of movie stars, like you said).

Also as someone heavily into vintage stuff (if you couldn't already tell, haha), I'd say there's quite a divide growing between "vintage" and "pin up". I'd say people in the pin up scene are much more into the polished, glamorous movie star aesthetic.

Lastly, there are so many different vintage hairstyles - from gibson girl roles to finger waves. I bet there's some vintage style out there that would co-operate with your hair! :D

Loving all of the hair pics! So many gorgeous 'dos.

I really enjoy vintage hair. I love playing around with 40s and 50s hair most of the time, but also wanna get into Edwardian hairstyles as my hair grows.
My hair is getting too long for pin curls/sponge curls now so I've switched to rag curls.

Here are two of my fave looks from last year. Both were done with pin-curled hair.

They kind of look like victory rolls but they are actually pin curls supported by side hair that's been pulled back and bumped with combs. It's a workaround for collarbone length bangs. Please excuse the frizz and flyaways; curly hair, *sigh*.

hananabread no I haven't tried one, and I fear I might not have enough hair to cover it. BUT I can warmly recommend a hair styling product called hair powder (sometimes texturizing powder), it's like teasing in a bottle without teasing or damage. Gives superb grip and volume! I have been praising it so much I'm afraid everybody is already tired to hear from it :D

sorry I have missed out on this product. Can you fill me in Please?

sorry I have missed out on this product. Can you fill me in Please?

I's like dry shampoo on steroids, or back combing in a container. It's a powder (made of silica silylate) that gives the hair lot of texture which makes it easy to get volume and staying power. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't leave hair feeling good to the touch (one can hardly run their fingers through the hair when using it).

I wrote my post you quoted long ago when I had recently discovered the product and was excited. Since then my enthusiasm has wained. Mostly due to the feel it gives (temporarily) to my hair and I also worry (like a true LHC champ) whether the silica silylate will erode hair cuticle over time. MInd you I have never seen anyone say this stuff would have damaged their hair, I am just overly protective. I still use it from time to time, for special occasions mostly. It might tell you how rarely I use it, that I have had the same small shaper jar for couple of years already and I think it will last me a good 3 more years at this speed.

I used to do wet roller sets when I had shoulder length hair, I'd brush it out to Marilyn Monroe-see waves and clip it back with flower clips. I had to clip it because it was so voluminous, and I could make my fringe go vertical and turn it into a quiff :-) My hair is naturally flat and fine and I thought it wouldn't hold a curl, but a wet set transformed it and would last until I washed it again.

I used a book called Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells, it has very clear explanations of how to do roller sets and pin curls, and gives a variety of styles to try from the 1920s to 1960s. I only ever attempted one or two hairstyles from the book because my hair wasn't long enough for the others but found it a great resource.

You can cheat on the roller sets by putting a ponytail at the top of your head, then rolling the ends. Oh, and if you have the time and inclination, you can leave part of the top out of the ponytail and roll it separately. I always found rollers hard to sleep in, so this was my compromise. The results are similar.

I recently started a new job, and I've been putting my hair into a loose top ponytail at night and rolling the ends dry on sponge rollers (only 4-5 of them). Most of my hair is too short to go into a high ponytail, but it's wavy enough that when I take the top down, it all blends. What happens is that the top gets smoothed out and goes into a nice curve that blends with the natural waves below. It definitely gets a vintage vibe, similar to what I posted a page or 2 back. I really love it.

That's handy to know, I might give that a try. I've got heated rollers. One pack isn't enough but I have an older (Charles Worthington Big Hair?) pack that I take the smaller ones out of to go with my Babyliss Thermoceramic ones.
I did buy some sleep in ones but they're quite big so I think they will only make volume or a wave.

You have to have the photograph (or whatever type of image) hosted on a site like PostImage or Imgur. (I don't recommend Photobucket since they got greedy and decided to make people use their premium service [a.k.a. pay Photobucket] to be allowed to link to our own photos from a forum.)

Anyway, upload your photo to one of the hosting sites, and then when you're posting a comment, there is a series of icons above the comment posting field. One of the icons looks like a painting of a tree. Click on it, and it will give you a field in which to paste the link to your photo. (I haven't ever used Imgur, but with PostImage, click the "Share" button, and I find the "Direct Link" option works best; copy that link and paste it into the field that you get by clicking on the "painting of a tree" icon on the forum.)

Then click "OK." You should be good to go at that point.

I hope that helps! :flower:

That was such a fun video! I struggle with vintage styles because no amount of brushing tames the frizz. I've tried using my natural curls and also doing pin and roller sets. Breaks my heart because I LOVE vintage hair!

That was interesting. She missed the boxer braids at the end though and she needed to actually iron her hair completely flat for the 70s.

Love that video! So many pretty styles :D I *try* to do retro curls, but I don't know where to place the foam rollers for the best result. This is what I get when I just put them in wherever. I still like it, but I definitely am going to watch some youtube videos on how to place rollers, how to section the hair, which way to roll them etc.

Watching that video has cheered me up no end :) I haven’t done any roller sets recently but the video reminded me how long it took to get my hair to resemble something intentional! I could get amazing volume, which grew day by day, but I always spent at least 10 minutes laughing at how ridiculous my hair looked as I brushed it out and tried to work out what to do with it :)

I’m going to watch every one of her videos :)

They're probably uploaded with photobucket and since they changed their therms from being free, to people having to pay if they wanted their pictures to be visible (new and old), you can no longer see them. There's hundreds of pictures on the forum that "disappeared" because of this.

Your curls looks lovely! I mentioned a book upthread a bit, Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells. It has a section explaining how to place rollers in great detail. I don’t know if she does any videos but it would be worth giving Lauren Rennells a google, I think she has a blog, from memory.

I had a go at a Gibson Tuck today, inspired by The Pinup Companion’s video about styles for straight hair without roller setting. Here’s the video.
https://youtu.be/G1gPL1MLrWQ

My hair is pretty wimpy without roller setting, it compacts down and it’s only collarbone length at the moment, so there isn’t much to tuck! This was a real quick effort, it took about a minute! Please excuse the very non retro mini hair clips and lack of volume - but I’m pleased how it turned out.

Oh, thank you Lady Stardust! I'm sorry that I didn't see this in August. I found an interesting tutorial on finger waves (really, Marcelling). It is heat styling but I'm OK with it on occasion on the front of my hair because it gets cut semi-regularly. I could also do this with an overnight set. What matters is the twist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ex8YdzIxY0 The one thing I'd change is to do the curling and then put in the wave clips for a little bit. Here's another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qknrcMRqT7s I have that size iron and a 1/2" for the method in the first video. I'm excited about this but I need to get some more wave clips because half of mine oxidized.

What I would probably do is leave a one or two inch section out on either side and bun the rest. Then loosely take those sections and wrap them around the bun and pin them.
I have waves like that in the front of my hair naturally (and I'm guessing by your hair type that you do, too) but if I didn't or I wanted to change them, I might try wetting them, bobby pinning them into waves, and letting them dry to make them wavy.
Also I think finger waves was a style of the month. Might check there for inspiration.

I was looking into trying that style and somewhere online I found instructions on it from an old magazine...pretty much that’s what they suggested. Many of the women of the time didn’t want to chop their long hair so they “faked” the new short wave look by loosely burning their hair and artfully finishing the front.

If I can find the article again I’ll link it.

I recently found this blog with instructions for what they call a “nervous bob”. They might not have your thickness of hair, but it might give you a start. I also haven’t checked out the links at the end of their blog - you might find something useful there. https://historyboots.wordpress.com/2013/07/26/beyond-the-bob-1920s-hairstyles-for-the-rapunzels-among-us/

Thank you. I like that the bangs of the early part of the '80s sat low. The high ones don't look good on me either. This look only seems to happen on washday when they have more volume. I brush them to the left and let them dry and they make a huge wave. I then brush them to the right and pin down the part that sticks up too much. By the time I get several days out from a wash, they're relatively straight and don't lay like this.

Wow, this was last year but I can answer. If you mean the '80s bangs, I think I did use a curling iron or steam curlers and I think the way to do it is to roll sideways or up, maybe diagonally up. It takes some wrangling to do it. Even with some wave/curl, I still have to work on them to get them to do that. Hairspray is a wonderful thing.

I have been wearing it down for the last 4 or 5 months, just free '90s style, I guess. It's hot; I want to go back to buns. What I'm looking for is a close-to-the-head wave in front with volume at the crown and I don't mind frizz. These exemplify that:

https://clickamericana.com/wp-content/uploads/Vintage-1920s-hairstyles-for-women-actresses-Betty-Blythe-and-Eleanor-Boardman.jpg (on the right)
https://clickamericana.com/wp-content/uploads/Vintage-1920s-hairstyles-for-women-actresses-Mabel-Ballin-and-Madge-Bellamy.jpg (again on the right)

I just found a bunch of pictures of a style that kind of reminds me of the Flinstones' dinosaur ribs https://bp-forum.s3.amazonaws.com/monthly_2019_02/IMG_2044.JPG.0923ee77fcc291f4803888d4117a1b6c.JPG They all involve curving the hair up and over the crown forward toward the face and pinning somehow:

https://clickamericana.com/wp-content/uploads/Before-and-after-classic-1920s-bob-hair-cut.jpg

Here's one where the ends aren't rolled or pinned down as much: https://clickamericana.com/wp-content/uploads/Real-vintage-1920s-hairstyles-for-women-actress-Leila-Hymans.jpg

This is most typical of what I try to do, a lower bun: https://clickamericana.com/wp-content/uploads/Real-vintage-1920s-hairstyles-for-women-actress-Lucy-Cotton.jpg I like it, but higher up on my head is just more practical.

I'm not sure I could use a fork for any unless I started with some kind of peacock twist thing. Or maybe it could be decorative, the way they used Spanish combs. Anyway, thought I'd share some ideas for the '20s. My summer wardrobe is basically all beach pajamas at this point. I work at home so my leaving the house clothes are very casual. Putting it up in some kind of bun with a scarf seems appropriate.

I just watched it again and it made me cry.

Part of the reason I grew my hair is because I wanted to wear it hippie-long. Except my hair doesn't look nice and cute down (it looks thin and stringy and kind of gross), and I can't stand having it down. Oh well...

How about half-ups?

I miss my Caruso hairsetter. The steam producing apparatus stopped working. I want to do a '40s style today.

I don’t have any pics but I just learned how to do bumper bangs with a donut that I cut apart and some bobby pins.
