So I've just barely made it out of the awkward stage and definitely can't make a real bun but have been playing around with trying to fold my ponytail in half into sort of a bun type thing. I was curious to get opinions from you guys as to where on the head a man bun looks best. I have seen a number of people rocking them from the very top of their heads to low at the nape. The general consensus for ponytails seems to be to keep them low but this doesn't seem to apply to buns?

Man buns in general are one of the best things to ever exist. The fashion seems to be to wear them high up but I personally prefer the lower down ones.

I honestly think where ever the bun feels comfy for you is always the right choice. When my bangs were growing out, I used to do my buns high on my head to catch the stupid bangs in there, but now that they are growing more I do my buns lower. As your hair grows you will have more freedom...
(If) I see guys in the wild wearing buns, it's usually twords the crown or middle of the head and I think they pull it off well.
I'll leave this video here for you to check out, (it's a bun 'tute from Jenna Marbles' boyfriend, Julien) maybe it will be helpful :)

Edit- he uses elastics, though.. so keep that in mind...elastics aren't always the most hair friendly choice, but still informative, I think.

Just play around with it and see where it's more comfortable for you. For example my boyfriend wears his ponytail-bun thingy pretty high at his head, while my brother wears it low at the nape. Be careful with the elastics you use because they can cause breakage.
Oh! And don't make them too tight because it can cause pain at the scalp and headaches.
Hope that hepls!

I LOVE man buns. That video was really good too. I think the top-half-up half down one is perfect every time i see it on every face.
Please don't do the messy man bun- its like, if you can't take care of it dont have it. I also think that of messy buns in general.
I always like the higher buns in general. It is interesting and unappologetic, but its also not like a pile of poop directly on top. haha
If you can use sticks, keep them lower. and use shorter sticks. simply because they're dangerous and i've poked people's eyes/ears trying to hug them.

Well, I love messy buns on men and women. Man buns are awesome, high or low depending on how you wear it. Dunno, different buns look good on different men (and women also), but do go for it! Man buns are great!

Wear one wherever you feel most comfortable! That's about all it takes. The biggest part is just getting comfortable wearing a bun in general.
When I'm out and about it's either low or in the middle, bun depending. Usually the middle though. :) (Like right now: Braided cinnabun smack dab in the center!)

I find that a cinnabun held up with hairsticks is less likely to unravel if worn higher. If the bun is worn too low, it tends to fall apart (as the bun in my avatar is doing).
This advice probably doesn't apply to buns held with clips or elastics.

I agree that different buns look good on different men. Some guys can rock the high bun on the crown--others, not so much. I think almost everyone looks good with the bun at roughly eyebrow-height. Aaaand, two gratuitous Brock O'Hurn photos to illustrate:

I wear mine low-middleish 90% of time because I cant stand having that high monster on top.... the pullin is not good when I remove it,
I do like the look of top knots, but my scalp is not happy with it.....
I secure with blacks nuetral surcuchies.... regular ties are just murders for my hair!!!!!

Thanks for the tips. I guess I'll just go with what's comfortable and suits me not worry about the rest.
