View Full Version : How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

I've heard so many times that showering every two or three days makes your hair dry
So how often do you wash your hair?

Typically daily but I try to skip a day at least once a week. I have an oily scalp. Never had a dry end issue until a few months ago. Though I blame our harsh city water. I long for a softener.

Once every three weeks, but oil doesn't travel from my scalp onto my strands because I'm tightly curly.

Once a week more or less, I've never done it more frequently in my entire life, so my scalp is used to it :)

once a week for me. i would do it less since my length doesn't get oily at all, but i can't stand a greasy scalp for too long, especially with short bangs!

Once a week for me.

I guess that's the best thing to do. Besides, I've been told twice that my hair looks kinda dry

Two times a week. Neither my scalp or hair gets oily, but my dandruff started building up 2 days after my wash.

Every other day. Occasionally I can stretch an extra day but that's it, my scalp gets greasy and starts to itch if I leave it too long.
If your hair is dry you can try oils, conditioners and a SMT (a kind of conditioner / honey mix). Just washing less often isn't the only option :)

Generally every other day I wash my hair with shampoo. On the days in between when I don't shampoo about half the time I'll still wet my hair and use conditioner, and the other half of the time I'll keep my hair pinned up/wear a cap while I shower. So basically 3-4 times a week I shampoo wash, 1-2 times conditioner only wash, and 1-2 days I do nothing.

Around once every four days so that's more than once a week and less than twice a week :)

I wash my hair every 7 days or so, but I ought to be washing it every 5 days if I want to wear it in public. I don't leave the house on the weekends, for the most part, and when I do I can get away with some dry shampoo on my fringe and a winter hat over the rest. Come summer, I'll probably go back to washing every 4-5 days for comfort's sake.

every 3-4 days depending on what I've been doing e.g. exercising, I oil it pretty much every night so it's not dry and I don't have a particularly oily scalp

Every 3 days, so basically twice a week-ish :) by the time its wash day, I find its really time to wash it (it's getting greasy), so I can't imagine stretching much more for me. Coconut oil has helped me keep my hair from ever getting too dry though!

Every three days, with Head & Shoulders (dry scalp care); either CWC or WCC but I think I'll switch over to WCC for a period of time... after reading an interesting post in an old LHC thread.

Oh, and I wish I could wash more seldom, but... I am a greaseball (one of the reasons is due to the creams I have to apply daily close to the hairline) and it starts to itch a lot after 2-4 days. Sometimes I go four days (:D), and even more seldom two days (when the itch gets unbearable--but H&S has helped me a lot with that).

I wash my hair every 10/11 days (I set up a repeating wash schedule in my online calendar, so it's every three Tuesdays staggered with every three Fridays, and I get reminders so it's easy to stay on track). I tried stretching to two weeks, but that was a bit too long for me, my scalp would get annoyed. This seems about right for me; since I hate having wet hair (and I only air-dry) I like stretching a pretty long time. I also oil my ends a bit with cheap olive oil, usually on the day after wash day.

Every week or so, sometimes I go half or a full week past the usual time, especially if I have been doing sustained heavy exercise with my hair in a (cotton) ponyscrub...the ponyscrubs (which get changed daily) end up kinda gross, but my length is just a bit damp. If I am staying in town with my hair up mostly, once a week. My current routine (which is designed to keep my scalp happy since my hair is not very responsive to different routines) is dilute shampoo scalp area, water jet scalp massage, condition on length (conditioner on scalp = anger!), vinegar rinse scalp area, cool water final rinse.

The compliments and touching don't tail off when I am past due, for what that is worth.

Great question!

I've fluctuated a lot when it comes to washing my hair. I used to every day, then only on the days that I worked, then every other day, to now only when I feel it desperately needs to be washed. The longest I've been able to go between washes before it gets way too oily for me to handle is five days, but I'm very comfortable with four. Plus, I only shampoo the roots and use a deep conditioning hair treatment on the length. My current hair care routine consists of using the Trichomania solid shampoo from Lush - it's super moisturizing and gentle, but very effective at cleansing away any oily residue - then using Happy Happy Joy Joy (Lush) which is a very lightweight conditioner on my ends or Retread (Lush) which is a deeper conditioning treatment if I feel my hair needs the extra TLC. As you can see, I really love Lush! Once I'm done washing, I then use R&B leave-in conditioner (Lush again) on my damp hair to help detangle.

Honestly, I can say that I hate washing my hair often now because it's typically a four-five hour ordeal every time I have to do it, so less often is best for me now!

I wash my hair when it needs to be washed. Typically this means about once a week, but if its not too greasy and still looks fine in an updo, I have no problem waiting a few extra days to wash.

Springs10808
February 7th, 2015, 12:06 PM
I only shower every other day unless I do something that makes me feel sweaty and gross, so I usually wash it every shower. I'm thinking of washing it every other shower now, though, because I kept it dry and covered during my last one and it seems to have gotten straighter and less frizzy over time and it only looks a little bit greasy (that should hopefully be less of a problem if it gets used to only being washed every four days)

Before LHC I washed every day. I've now switched to about twice a week and my hair is much happier. Sometimes I CO in between my shampoo washes if my hair is all crinkled up and weird or if I get super sweaty or something. So if you count CO washes then sometimes 4x/wk.

I wash my hair twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays. I could probably wash my scalp more, but I can't be bothered, and it looks fine in updos, in particular Heidi braids. I also get frizzy, dry ends if I wash more often than that. So oiling and somewhat infrequent washing it is for me.

I know what you mean, many people here stretch their washes out so much, sometimes I really feel like I "ought" to wash my hair less often, but it seems happy enough with this. And as long as my hair and scalp are happy, I figure it's ok.

I have the same approach.
So for me, it really depends on the weather (humidity): I shampoo about once a week in summertime and once every 2 weeks in wintertime, but it really depends on how my scalp and hair feel and how busy I am. I do scalp-only washes between my regular shampooings: it saves time and reduces wet manipulation massively!
I would have to wash a lot more frequently if I wore my hair down, since it would get dirty faster, but since I always wear it up, it stays clean longer.

Divnedobbie and annalouise, I'm curious as to how washing your hair more frequently decreases your shedding? I've always thought it would be the other way around. I shed a ton every time I wash and when I just detangle as well.

Divnedobbie and annalouise, I'm curious as to how washing your hair more frequently decreases your shedding? I've always thought it would be the other way around. I shed a ton every time I wash and when I just detangle as well.

My only theory is that the sebum and dead cells built up on my scalp and clogged my follicles causing my hair to "suffocate" and fall out. I noticed it happens any time I do any overnight deep treatment as well. Conditioners, oil, protein masks, SMT's, anything left on for more than a few hours cause a huge amount of hair loss. Being wet for extended periods of time could be loosening my hair follicles causing the hair to fall out. Honestly, I'm not sure, I just know it's a bad thing for me.

Actually now that I think about it, for the past three weeks I've been applying monistat overnight, and I haven't had any hair sheds. It's either because a) the monistat dries within a few hours or b) it keeps away the bacteria/fungus (the whole point of monistat) whereas other deep treatments promoted bacteria/fungus because of the warmth and damp.

years ago i used to wash 5 times a week shudder: with harsh shampoo
now i CO wash only with organic conditioner, once every 7 days, my hair growth has been amazing since i stopped using chemical filled products. (about 2.5 inches in 2 months)
Shampooed once(organic) after very heavy oiling in january.
Hair has never been so soft and voluminous!

I wash every 2-3 days or 3-4 times a week. It depends on how much I sweat and what I am doing. If I want to wear my hair town 2 days in a row, it gets washed 2 days in a row. Very simple. By the 3rd day my hair is always greasy at the roots and dry on the ends. My sebum stinks and I can't stand it.

CurlyCap
February 7th, 2015, 09:48 PM
I co-wash everyday with a vinegar rinse afterward.

It's a real pain and has become more so as my hair has grown. But attempts to stretch my washes have always lead to unhappy hair and anunhappy scalp. I'll skip a wash if I've had a ridiculous day and just need to sleep, but it means my hair looks and feels like crap until I wash it again.

The good news is that it doesn't take long to co-wash everyday. Detangling is a breeze and as my hair and scalp are always optimally moisturized it behaves itself well. The drying time is the pain, since I have to put my hair up at work.

But oh well. I've gotten used to it.

I used to wash every 7-10 days. My hair looked fine (it hides greasies really well), but my scalp got terribly itchy and painful. Some members here adviced me to wash more often, and I've been doing that ever since. I wash when needed, which is every 3-4 days. Stretching washes doesn't work for everyone :)

Every 7 days if I do not brush everyday, every 5 if I do. It also depends on what styles I wear (more manipulation = more sebum).
Been like that for at least 10 years. It looks greasyish but disguiseable last day or two...

My scalp is happy with it, as long as I use mild shampoo. It was happiest with egg washes but I gave up on that because of the smell. It really got flaky and itchy when I washed more often.

TwilightShadow
February 8th, 2015, 04:39 AM
Every 5-7 days; on some week days, when I don't have enough time to let it air dry, I try to disguise the greasiness with a braided updo and wash it the next day. During the weekends, if I don't go out one day, I'll wash it the next day as well.

I wash mine about once a week, unless it's looking a bit funky. In that case, I stretch it one more day with braided updos, and then wash. If I've been sweating for whatever reason, I use a dry shampoo to cover up the worst of it. I have bangs, so sometimes those get washed separately.

I don't wash with shampoo, and can vary my routine from once a week to once a month. It really depends on the weather, my schedule and my mood. I usually treat wash day as a kind of spa day, where i might treat myself to a lengthy scalp massage, or a catnip rinse or a gelatin mask, or clay scented with my favorite EOs. It's an event.

In order to stretch my washes for a month, I'll regularly scritch and preen (sebum only cleansing techniques) before bed. By morning, the oils have usually absorbed into my hair (or possibly my pillow?) and it looks fine.

I usually wash my hair every time I warm up the sauna, and that is on Wednesdays and Sundays, so my hair gets washed twice a week.

My scalp doesn't like stretching washes, and after 4 days I feel like I'm starting to shed more. I have tried WO (7 months) and after that CO (almost a year), and varieted with how often I washed my hair, but it seems my hair and I are both happiest with this "every third or fourth day" -schedule. And me using sulfate-free shampoos.

It varies depending on the weather, how my hair looks and what I'm doing, but I generally wash every other day. Sometimes I'll do a water only rinse instead (my hair looks great after this), but then I'll probably do a proper wash the day after. I am prone to oily skin and scalp (though nowhere near as bad as in my teens!) and I hate the smell of my head after a couple of days, plus my scalp gets sore if I leave it too long without a wash. My hair looks best on the second day - by the third day I have oily roots.

To prevent my length from drying out too much I'll often run conditioner through it before washing. I only ever actively wash the scalp, unless I'm clarifying.

(I haven't read all the thread)

I usually wash daily, sometime I skip a day if I'm not going anywere. I tried stretching in the past but my scalp freaks out easily, and demands regular washing with sulphate shampoos. I have very oily hair, even now when I am approaching 40 years of age. I also think my hair looks and behaves the best when freshly washed, so it's a win-win-win. The only thing I don't like is the drying time which needs to be taken account almost daily.

I shampoo about 1x per week, but I hold my hair above my head and try to only shampoo the roots. Then I deep condition all over :)

I usually wash every 2-3 days, depending on the what I'm doing. I've been halfheartedly working on stretching to 5-7 days, and am on day 4 right now, and it still looks good! I saturated my hair with dry shampoo yesterday morning and did twin dutch braids, pinned up, since it was just not a good day to wash. Today the top of my head looked a bit ashy from the shampoo, but clean and not itchy, so combed it out well and wore it to work in a really high bun. Tonight is definitely a wash night though.

I since very recently wash once a week, and I'd like to only water once a week and shampoo every two weeks, but I'm having big dandruff issues so it's not an option for me. I used to wash my hair daily until last july, and in june I couldn't even imagine washing my hair every two days! To everyone out there thinking spacing washes won't work for them, you just have to try for a bit longer. Also, water only is your best friend while spacing. It also helped me be less self conscious about my apearance, since now I can tolerate slightly greasy hair knowing it's perfectly healthy and natural, instead of panicking at the first sign of shinyish roots.

I've been trying to stretch my washes. I typically now will wash my hair every 2 - 4 days. It starts looking pretty bad by the 3rd day but i try to just deal with it. I do CWC, I haven't washed my length in about 3 weeks... seems to be helping.

I wash once a month now, and make a whole day out of it with treatments and rinses, air drying to encourage my curls. And I do lots of body treatments too.

During the month I do scalp massages/scritching a couple of times a week/when I feel like it.

My hair has always been dry, so I don't really have a problem with it looking greasy. In fact my hair has never looked better, the less I do to it the nicer it looks.

I admire all of you who can wash so infrequently! I've tried to stretch washes, but my hair gets pretty gross by the third day, so I wash every three days. I have a fringe, too, so I can't disguse greasiness very well with updos.

Many people with bangs just wash their hairlines frequently, which allows to stretch full washes. :flower:
Also, consider scalp-only washes to tide you over between full washes, like this one (presented by LauraLongLocks): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VBOVM-dHlc
Alternatively, clay-based dry shampoos can be of help, too. :)
Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with washing hair frequently either: I think it's more annoying than damaging.

Once a week :)
I find my hair does not get oily (especially since I've been stretching washes) and does not need to be washed until the 7th day.
I also don't use heat on my hair and so air drying takes about 5 hours. The hassle of washing and drying all this hair is something I can only tolerate once a week :p
(not to mention the fear of damaging my hair while it's wet is very real shudder: )

Errr... have you looked around the forum a bit yet? There's plenty of other methods than using shampoo.

2-3 times a week, but I'm a former daily washer and washing 7 days a week to 2-3 times took me forever to achieve. I'm hoping to be able to eventually do once a week and have hair long enough to do scalp-only washes. Right now sometimes I'll just wash the front face-framing layers part of my hair only, similar to a bangs-only wash.

sounds too familiar :-) I started in 2012 with 6 months of water only and since then I've slowly been stretching to washing my hair once a week and scalp-only. It's been a long journey but so worth it

btw kidari I really love your avatar :-)

I wash my hair every 2 to 3 weeks. The longer I go without washing, the softer my hair feels.

That sounds encouraging and thank you! Also, I agree with curlylocks85 that since I've been washing less and being more careful about moisturizing my ends, I find that my frequent microtrims are no longer a necessity.

Thanks for the advice! Actually, I don't find washing my hair frequently annoying at the moment, because I love oiling it the night before washing and how soft it is afterwards. :) On the other hand, it's too slippery after washing to hold updos very well, so I should probably try to stretch my washes further.

Twice a week.
I tried to stretch it to once a week but just can't do it. I would need to keep my hair up for longer but I miss my hair down too much so I'll just wash it eheh

Every other day. I would love to stretch it another day or two, but the combination of fine hair (that refuses to hide oil) and having hair too short for beautiful braided updos is stopping me for now. For now I have switched from a sulfate shampoo and conditioner routine to shampoo bars and vinegar rinses, and that has made my hair and scalp happier while I wait for the length to grow.

Every 3 or 4 day. My hair will look greasy after 4 days of no showering and will start to itch :(
Tried to strech to only once a week, but i hated how oily my roots was the last 4 days!

Besides, i think my hair looks the best when it is newly washed. Soft and shiny looking :D
