Hi all,

I'm growing my hair back out from BSL and waiting to color it again. I'd love to see some pics of long black and dark brown hair for inspiration. :) Both down and in up-dos.

(Apologies if there is another thread like this... I couldn't find one in the search.)

What a great idea for a thread. I was looking for a similar one recently and couldn't find one either.
As a child my hair was medium brown, even with some lighter streaks, and as I got older it darkened.
I started dyeing it about 7 years ago, and my last product application was just plain blue on the whole length, which resulted in a blue black colour in the sun.
However, I haven't used it since ~June and I can't really see much difference in colour between my roots and the length, so I guess I can technically call my hair black. The tips are lighter because I used bleach ~4 years ago.
I think in some lights my hair doesn't look completely black because it's really fine. Also, I guess always staying out of the sun helps it stay that dark.

Here's two I thought looked nice (with braid waves):

Another I posted yesterday in the braid thread:

Here's an older pic from before my senior prom in 2012 :) probably straightened and then curled a little at the ends.

And this was in May of 2012, probably close to the same time, with my actual hairtype. :o

I'm so glad someone made this thread!

I dyed my hair black for four years. This was the last length photo I took with black hair (Sept. 2014).

In October of 2014, I had it lightened to my natural dark brown. This was my January length picture.

Whoo! Here's some photos of my black wavy hair! It's 1c/2a naturally, but I use braid-waves to boost the waves. My hair is a mix of matte-black with some red/brown tones at the ends in really bright light. I'm Filipino, so I had a lot of issues with not having the uber-speshul SHINY-BLUE-BLACK hair that's really coveted in most of Asia. It surprises me whenever I get compliments on my hair color as opposed to my waves, because I just think my hair's normal.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b124/CrossoverQueen/Photos/elphabatestshot_zps5091a05c.jpg

Here it is braided. It's really thick and coarse, so it only shrinks up about two or three inches in a braid. I found it really strange to hear that some people's hair shrinks up to HALF A FOOT in a braid.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b124/CrossoverQueen/Photos/Hairstyles/jul612hiplengthhairbraided_zps531fdc42.jpg

And here's a photoshoot where my hair suddenly gained a purple sheen(???). This was with my photographer friend and it was at late-noon/early-evening for the best light, so it's nowhere near what my hair looks like normally.

thank you MidnightMoon! :)
my natural color is a soft black that kinda fades quickly with sun exposure, so i henndigo every few months and use a blue/green deposit dye to keep the cool tones. circumfrence is 11,8 to 12,3cm these days. technically i think it hit classic by now, but will take a few more weeks until it looks like that.

Ooh, I really like this thread! So many beautiful heads of dark brown/black hair. I feel like playing along even though these aren't the best pictures for color. The first is an unofficial length shot I took about a week ago to check how close I am to waist and the other was a spur of the moment thing to see how my bun was holding up.

My hair color changes a decent amount depending on the light hitting it - in sunlight it gets a dark auburn tint, in classroom lighting it's nearly black...it's pretty unpredictable what color it will be on a given day :D

Most of the time I bun wet because otherwise my hair looks like a mess. Very coarse hair. It looks like I've got more volume then I've got. But today I wore my hair loose and later on I braided it, enormous thick braid :-)

Sometimes. I'd be lying if I said I never looked at the blondes and redheads and thought, "If only...." ;) I do love my hair color though. I just find it frustrating when people call it black, since I've always considered it dark brown. My mother has the very rare blue-black, I actually envy her hair a lot more than I do the lighter-haired people.

I'm honestly not sure what mine is, it's black but it gets a dark brown tinge only in very bright, direct sunlight.

What color was your hair as a young child? I find that with black hair, it's black from childhood, while dark brown/almost black hair will be a little lighter. My hair is very dark and sometimes mistaken for black, but when I was about 10 or so it was obviously dark brown.

Yes, I know!
I'm not sure if it is very thick by looking at braids and the way strands kind of stick to each other, a bit like a spider's web, I'm leaning more towards average thickness. What is amazing though is the lack of taper.
Tatsu, you cut your hair yourself? It always seems as if you've just trimmed, perfectly straight hemline.

I do:) I did have a u shaped hemline at the beginning of this year, so I've been microtrimming a bit to get it straight. Now I'm back to only trimming twice a year:) So in a few months it might not look so new trimmed anymore:p

Hello everybody :)
I looove to see dark dark black hair, it inspire me a lot.
I used to have WL hair 2 years ago, but I did that ombre hair :'( and it fried my hair :( and I have to cut ir to SL.
Right now I am in the process to go back to my natural hair color (medium brown) and give up hair dyes, but everytime I see dark hair, I fall in love, its so shinny, so I start doubting if let it grow natural or keep coloring it.
By the way, this is my hair 2 years ago.

And here is my hair right now.. Dyed in Darkest Brown but still not so shinny, healthy, full and smooth like before :( but working on it.

browntatis welcome! Looks very shiny, indeed, both before and now.

It appears that many of us here dye our hair to make it as dark as we like.
Honestly, in my case, despite my natural hair being very dark it always seems so ashy to me... and I feel my skin looks sallow with my very dark brown.
Applying blue to it makes it shiny, and seem more well kept... as in "no I'm not a countryside girl whose hair just grows wildly" and more like "it is a fashion statement/my personal style and choice to wear my hair like this, and it goes well with my dark/sort of gothic appearance". Perhaps if I had light eyes and were a pinkish pale very dark brown would be fine, but it's not the case.
I wish it didn't wash out so easily though :( I bet you feel the struggle, Tatsu.

There is a user who goes from blonde -not even brown- to black using this method. Her username is RavennaNight (might a letter or two off lol). She has a blog and all. Ive hear the biggest problem is having this lighter halo around your head with an orangish colour. In my case its a brownish one specially in yellow lights which turn my natural almost black to some weird warm brown while the rest appears pitch black fading into blue :(.

TatsuOni, so your hair is henndigo black? If you don't mind my asking, does it have a reddish or brownish color under certain lighting, or does it always have that rich, blue-black? I love blue-black so much (my mom has it) and recently have almost considered henndigo.

Coarse hair and bun waves on the tips in combination with fairytale ends. In reality, the tips are very worn (strand diameter at the tips is about 3/4 of what it is at the root). So the worn tips lose the normal wave and are pretty straight or adopt a bun wave. A blunt hemline would probably not look so "neat"

No trims...it just grows back to the terminal shape. S&D from time to time...lots of splits, white dots, etc. in the worn tips, and with the terminal thing going on, they are interspersed all through my hair from a few at BSL to the majority past classic. When I get behind on S&D it gets annoyingly tangly.

I get roots as har grows out but the hair closest to the scalp doesn't fade. Just the ends. I CO wash every other week. I guess it's because the ends are older and more sensitive and rubs against clothes and such...

Yes it's normal cuz the ends is older and more sun/possible damage wear n tear has hit them so they will be a tad lighter.

Personally My ends are same color as my roots all throughout he hair but that's cuz the sun never ever sees my hair lol

Yeah it's normal, especially if hair is exposed to sun quite a bit. I have red heads in my family so in the sun I get quite a few red highlights.

Littlestarface I'm curious.... I read a page or so back that you wear a hijab is that because you want to or because of religious reasons? Are you allowed to show your hair as long as it's not showing your face too? I'm genuinely curious how it works. Brown and black hair will usually fade to reddish, its not because of "having redheads" in your family, its how it goes with hair pigmented that way. The same when you lighten, it will usually be auburn/orange/yellow.
It will also happen in the sun, so yes its normal. I avoid the sun as I like my skin pale and hate the burning sensation, plus I use temporary dyes so it doesnt happen to me. You could use some dye on your ends like manic panic or pravana to counteract that I believe.

One by one with bright light and sharp scissors!

Most dark colored hair fades towards red-brown from sun or mechanical wear...my tips are about 10 years old, and are distinctly thinner than at the root.

Fairytale ends don't have to be piecey...if I comb out the ends are almost invisible single hairs...that picture is day 5? hair after a full day of heavy trailwork, but detangled and combed out...and then 20 minutes of going back and forth between the rock and the camera to adjust and hope the breeze would die down, so more piecey than fluffy. Fairytale is more about the all lengths hair, with strands each at their own position in the growth cycle.

Wooow Thanks! So thats what I do! S&D, I didn't know it actually had a name! Thanks :)

You're not the only one who's been doing it for years just to realize that it's a real technique and there's many people (At least here) doing it:p I had been doing it for a long time when I found out through a Swedish hair forum that it has a name:p

I think I might belong in here, now! I need to take some outdoor sunny pics, as in a lot of light my hair is much lighter than it is in lower lights (obviously). But I don't really have a handle on what color I'd call it! It seems so dark, but then I take a photo like this:

And it's quite light! That can't be too accurate, though, considering how white my skin is. But I know that the darker ones aren't too accurate either because my skin is too dark! I'm very pale, but not printer paper pale LOL

Angeletti and Hairwish are long gone.
Ah, trolley is here, though.

Hmm, more than taking them in the sun, take them somewhere your camera doesn't try to adjust the light. I usually get those white/yellow skin pics when there's a lot of light and my phone kinda focuses on who knows what and it just looks weird. My own hair, which you can see is pretty dark (I put dye on it, but my roots are practically black anyway, as I believe the Pravana has washed away by now in my canopy) and I too have pics where it looks golden or a medium ash brown.
Judging by your signature hmm, yes, it's a dark brown, but perhaps the auburn thread might suit you as well, as it seems as if you have some red tones. If only looking at the pic you posted, I wouldn't say it's black or the darkest brown we have in this thread, looks more like regular brown.
You're welcome here, of course, though :p, company is appreciated.

I think I'll keep using henna gloss, my hair seems stronger. I just don't enjoy the rinsing part, even when using loads of cheap conditioner I find it time-consuming and I get tired of seeing orange water coming out of my hair. My roots touch up are long overdue (last application was 3 months ago).

Same thing that happens to me and the blue+black :/
But at least henna doesn't come off from the parts where it's already been applied. This dye does, which means you end up with a lighter canopy no matter how many times you apply it, instead of just roots/new growth.
But from what I've heard and seen, it does seem like A LOT of work. I had considered doing henna+indigo at one point, but I just can't put up with the trouble, I get impatient just waiting 2 or 3 hours with vegetable dyes, can't imagine spending the day.
Do you like the orange tones? (well, I'm guessing yes, though it could be just for the added benefits).

MidnightMoon

esfand I'm always amazed at how dark it can be, like, the rest of the colours seem a variation of mostly blonde and brown, and then there's black/nearly black brown.
It's weird we have different colours of hair, I mean, how I can have black hair coming out of my head, yet my arm hair is really fine and light brown, I imagine if we were cat's we'd have spots of black in our heads, then brown, white, etc., I know it's a weird thought, but I find it funny.
I also find black cats funny :p, I've had two, and at times you can just see their eyes. So cute.

Yes, it's a bit of work. It's worth it though, I hardly see any split end. But like you said, it's permanent.
The henna gloss stains burgundy in the first weeks, then brown-reddish in my hair because I add amla and hibiscus tea in the henna mixed with conditioner, and my natural color is dark to begin with. But the paste washes out orange, and my bathtub gets orange if I don't wash it with bleach right away.

Hehehe I love really dark hair! When I was much more auburn I'd dye my hair black all the time.

I don't know if I'd go in the actual auburn/red thread, as it seems while I still have red tones they come out as gold in the light. Part of why I'm struggling to love my hair tbh.

pandabarrier Hmm, yeah, it doesn't really look orange, just a dark red or amber shine in the sun, but still, I thought in the sun you'd have some of the orange, specially in the loose hairs, which light seems to hit differently than when all together.

Corvana Hmm, well, you can always hang out in both :p
Why are you self conscious of taking selfies?
I feel weird taking them when there's people around, even friends, because of what I myself think of people doing it (that they look silly sometimes, that they're busy looking at themselves instead of enjoying whatever they're doing, and just the general vibe of "self admiration"), but sometimes I have to against myself and realise no one is even going to notice or give me a prize for being "different" or whatever. So if I want a picture, I better take that picture. Who cares what strangers will think?

C_Bookworm It is a big picture, but an even more bigger bun :p
You seem to have a lot of hair, and it looks truly black.
I'd love to have a true black myself, but it seems pure jet black hair isn't as common as one might think, at least where I come from and live, I don't know if it's different perhaps in some Asian regions.
In my case, I mix Pravana in blue and Manic Panic black to darken it. These days it's mostly to keep my bleached ends darker, because, even if you can't tell from pics, the ends are bleached to the point they turn a yellowish colour if I don't use anything on them for some time. I'm slowly growing it out, so I'm guessing I'll stop using dyes once I get rid of them.
I love blue-black, but it's not going to be worth it anymore once I don't have bleached hair. It just washes off too quickly from virgin hair, and doesn't make enough difference to justify the expense and time it takes me.

LadyCelestina Thank you! It actually takes some effort in my case to stay pale. I can go from very pale to tan quickly, so I'm in the proudly pasty thread, eternal avoider of the sun :p
I like contrast as well, though some people look great with hair close to their skin tone. My only complaint would be when trying to go for a "softer" look, that's when I wish I was blonde with light eyes. Pink or pastels look differently on me. I wonder if other people in this thread feel the same  Walking around with a cloak of black hair + dark eyes doesn't exactly scream sweetness.

TatsuOni I'm not sure Tatsu, your hair looks just a few inches shorter than mine, plus, remember I have my bleached ends I want to get rid of. I also have a big butt, and am taller than you, so at least marker wise I am certain you're ahead. You'll probably get to classic any time now.

Our house faces a busy road, one of the three main ones in our tiny town. So there's always people driving by and it just makes me nervous. On top of just the cars going by (I'm terrified of them, due to past trauma), my anxiety doesn't help with the people in the cars seeing me "be weird" in my front yard lol. I actually find it easier when I'm not at home, and since I'll be at my bestie's this weekend, I'll probably take some while I'm there!

So it's a big combination of factors: Not being as aware of the cars driving by and where exactly they are while I'm taking a photo, being too aware of the fact that people are in the cars, and just general anxiety about doing "weird" things at my own house where my weirdness would be attached more firmly to this place (ie "That's that weird woman's house"). Being "that weird woman" has never bothered me except when it comes to being attached to my actual residence. Which is weird in itself I suppose! Maybe because I used to be stalked by an ex and being "that weird woman" is so well tied to myself that I feel like he'd be able to find me again just with that...? Something to examine, I think.

It's strange how you don't really think about reasoning for things until trying to explain stuff to someone else! I suppose that's why therapists are so good.

Haha, you bet.
Wow, that's much more elaborate than what I had thought originally. My immediate suggestion, then, would be to find some other place you might feel comfortable taking pictures of yourself whenever you want to. Maybe a park? (I mean, aside from your friend's house)
More than being the "weird woman of x house", sounds like you're afraid it will become some sort of rumour by which your ex will find your residence? Does this person live in the area? Or you mean you going viral and he finding you from the other side of the country?
Because the last sounds unlikely, and if the first, if he had wanted to he would have found you by now, if it's such a small town, I'd guess.

In any case, it doesn't sound like the best place to take pictures, even I'd be bothered by cars swishing by if I were you.
Maybe you can remember to take a few next time you go grocery shopping?

Do try to talk yourself out of some of these thoughts, though, sounds like a lot to have in mind on top of regular preoccupations. I think I understand where it comes from, but you'd probably feel more at ease if you talked to someone about it.

We live in the same state, and he lives in my hometown (I think, he could've moved I guess) where I still have people I talk to. I'm like 90 miles away, now. I don't think he'd actually try to find me anymore, but I think that his stalking instilled in me a deeper fear of being "connected" to a residence. Like how it takes awhile to get used to not needing to pull your hair out of your shirt after you've cut it? But as that sort of thing had no reason for me to examine, I just kept doing it even if there's no reason anymore. Now that I've thought of it, I'll likely be able to actually get over it. Can't get over something you never think about

The car thing though... Ugh. Once our fence and the fire ants are fixed up, then I'll just go in the back yard like I used to! Even if people can see me from their windows, the fence gives me enough of an illusion of privacy to not actually care.

But besides the car thing, most of it is just "anxiety" that I don't notice more than the sense of panic unless I think about it for some reason (like to explain why I feel the anxiety, besides my anxiety disorder lol). So it's not really something I have in mind at all, except of course keeping an eye on the cars which anyone with any sense would likely do anyway. Like, I know people are in cars, but I don't actively think "people are in cars". I'm aware of it in the same way I'm aware that there's birds in trees and bugs in the grass. A passive awareness, I guess? It's hard to really describe, because I'm so aware of stuff like that because of my anxiety disorder, but at the same time I'm not actually thinking about it. Unless I see someone in their window looking my direction, then I actually think about it for a second.

The last tenant planted a tomato plant out front, though, and I wonder if I can hide behind it  It's so big!! Almost as tall as I am, I think. Plus I can pretend that I'm taking pictures of it, which is much less strange.

First time I've been pleased to be told I have a big bun :joy:

I'm glad it reads as true black. It seems like a cyclical thing. The first week after I henndigo, I'm very pleased with the color. After that, the indigo starts to fade, and warmth returns to my color. Combine that with visible roots, and I start to get itchy to color again. I've got my henna and indigo on automated monthly shipments, so at least I keep the cycle a set length.

Interesting to hear the mix you use. Were you able to settle on it pretty quickly, or did you run through a few experiments before finding the right combo?

pandabarrier Hmm, yeah, it doesn't really look orange, just a dark red or amber shine in the sun, but still, I thought in the sun you'd have some of the orange, specially in the loose hairs, which light seems to hit differently than when all together.

My greys get bright orange with the henna gloss, fortunately I don't notice a lot of grey hair yet.

^ Interesting how perception of haircolour changes, since both of the posters above seem legit dark brown to me :D But I come from a country where the majority of hair is in the blonette/brown range, and myself have medium brown... if both Corvana and Cesil don't have dark brown hair, then I must be a blonde  (but I've been told once or twice that my hair is dark blonde on these boards)

Corvana, I get what you mean, and I’m glad you’re giving it some thought. There’s some exercises that could help you with that, just google CBT sheets, or CBT anxiety sheets and the like. I feel like it has more to do with irrational ideas (not that you don’t have a valid reason behind your anxiety, it's how they're called :P).
I didn’t suggest a back yard because I figured you maybe didn’t have one, since you didn’t mention it. Sounds like a good idea, and hiding behind a tomato plant sounds funny. Reminded me of that magic bean plant lol.
Anyhow, it’s good it’s not something you actively think about, and I’m guessing it’s something you have learnt to cope with by now. I do feel like in my case that “passive awareness” you talk about can get bad (triggered?) sometimes, and it’s having those thoughts about certain things that causes me to feel a certain way about something. To be more clear… imagine you’re not in contact daily with dogs, but you do think they could bite you and that they’re hard to control, specially big dogs. In the event that I face one, instead of being able to rationally assess how aggressive this dog could actually be or giving it a chance, I’m stuck being afraid of it, stressed by its presence, and having negative thoughts.
Now apply that to the rest of my life, which I have prejudices against or am afraid of.

C_Bookworm, haha you’re welcome. It does, at least here, in photos.
I didn’t know indigo faded! Glad to know that, I mean, I kinda suspected it, but I had been told it’s permanent, so I thought maybe it was some miraculous solution if I ever wanted a natural solution to my dye dilemma.
I mean, I guess if my starting colour was lighter, I would still see it as “black” and just be happy about it, but in my case, I already probably have a colour darker than most people get with indigo after a few washes, if it fades like you describe. It’s more of that brownish tone that comes out in the sun or near windows or certain lights what bothers me.
Another doubt I had is… don’t you experience any breakage from applying it, combing it and removing the henna?
Because my fine hair tangles a lot, and is hard to manage when wet, so if I want to make sure I get the dye everywhere, I need to separate it in bits, and sometimes comb it, otherwise it sticks to each other in clumps, and there’s dry hair left. Then, when I wash, I feel like a ripped through more hair than on a regular day, and I’m afraid it would add up to a lot after a couple years.

About the mix, it’s just something I came up with after a bleaching and experimentation accident a while ago (April 2015). I ended up with red (think natural redhead or near that) from root to below ears, and greenish black from ears to BSL (which is where I got my hair cut to).

After trying to lighten the black and all the bleaching I had done before to try to make it all red I wasn’t willing to use any more bleach or boxed dyes. I had used Pravana before, and had some experience with Manic Panic in different shades.
I guessed it’s what a stylist would do anyway, to “fill in” the hair that had no colour. I bought the dye, and I think the first time I did the black first, washed, then blue, I can’t remember anymore.
I was (am, still, but now it’s more bearable, as I have over two years of unbleached hair) pleased with the result, and it definitely darkened my hair a lot. It did look blue or teal in the sun, the bleached hair. It’s as if bleach gives it the ability to let light through, and now, even if it looks almost black in the shade, those bits look an intense blue in the sun. I’m happy it has a more even tone, and whenever the blue is noticeable, it looks like an ombre. I had posted a pic not that long ago of what it looks like when I let the blue fade. It takes it a while to get to what it looks like in the pic. Let me see if I can find it…

About Corvana's and Cesil's hair, while I would agree it's brown, and could describe it as dark brown, it's not the darkest brown I think was in mind when creating this thread.
I too come from a place where, depending on the region, there's a lot of people with lighter hair. Not like in Scandinavia from what I've heard, but more than say, here in Spain where I'm living for a while.
Despite being brown and dark, both have a certain something to it, you can clearly say it's brown (I think it has to do with some redness/warmth).
More than intended to group black and brown hair, I think the purpose of the title was to describe black or this very dark brown that's almost close to black, sometimes called "natural black", since most people don't seem to have the pure jet black you get with a dye.
Think of something like this

It's a shade you can't really call black, because in the sun or some parts it might have hints of brown, and you feel it's like a watered down black. It it's not warm or light enough to just be called brown, because at least I, when thinking of brown, think of hazelnuts or oak trees, wood in general. The shade I have in mind is more ashy, darker, sometimes can even look grey.
I also think it makes a lot of difference when it comes to what colours favour people with these shades. Their/your brown hair probably looks better with earthy tones, while the darkest brown or black probably looks best with cooler tones, and seems more neutral.

Yeah, I know what haircolour you mean, I think it's sometimes also called off-black, or as dark brown that it might be as well called black (and the people often dye it to true black). I went through the first pages of this thread and it seems that the OP meant the same colour as you by "dark brown" and it's me who got confused :)

One thing I've noticed through is that it seems as if there were different levels of saturation to the off-black or darkest brown. For example I have a friend with off-black hair, but hers is not as saturated as some the shared pics in this thread. It's a kind of charcoal hue. I've seen this on pale-skinned people, with mostly some pinkish undertone, that their hair is dark, even near black, but only when compared to their own skintone. They are not as "dark" as the people you shared in their overall coloring, and if you placed their hair on some of the people in your pics, the hair would look dull or even light.

Vivid black hair is very rare here, and it's mostly the "clear winter" type with light eyes and I've seen mostly men with this coloring, still it's not the pitch black indian shampoo commercial haircolour. (of course, the roma people here have indian commercial hair :) )

I'm just rambling here, not really pushing any point or opinion in particular :D :) I love talking about colours.

I think I get what you mean, and I agree on hair not even looking the same on different people. My face is pretty pink, too, though it depends so much in the light...
Sometimes I can look really pink and my hair really dark. Other times I feel like I look yellow, and at those times my hair looks warmer.
I don't even know what to think lol.
I think I like myself the best in places with natural light and white walls, I feel like it gives the truest colour, opposed to the yellow interior walls and light reflected from the beige building next to the window. Just now I was checking out my hair from the back in a mirror in the living room and it looked so brown...
I think I might be obsessing over that now.
A few weeks ago I was feeling glad the black had faded in my virgin hair because I felt it was too dark made me look too dark overall, now I'm sad because it's not pure black... and you bet in two weeks I'll be happy again it's not. This is why I can't do anything to it other than non permanent dyes, eh...

My understanding is that once indigo is on, some amount of it will be permanent, thus the reason bleaching over indigo always runs the risk of going green. But unlike henna, which stays at exactly the same color saturation a year after I apply it vs. a week after I apply it, indigo will fade. It takes many applications for the color I want to stick properly. It's strong, but not exactly a magic bullet.

No breakage here. I comb my hair out carefully before application, and apply it in sections. When it comes time to wash it out, I unclip all the sections and use a mermaid soak to remove most of the henna/indigo. After that I take a regular shower with a ton of conditioner. I just keep reapplying and rinsing and finger combing until the water runs clear. Usually it takes 1-2 bottles of VO5. Fortunately they're super cheap and the entire process leaves my hair so conditioned and tangle free.

I believe most people only touch up roots once they've got the length colored, so my experience is probably more arduous than average. But I appreciate the shine and thickness it imparts to the entire strand, so even if I'm maxed out on color on the lengths, it's worth it for me.

About the mix, it’s just something I came up with after a bleaching and experimentation accident a while ago (April 2015). I ended up with red (think natural redhead or near that) from root to below ears, and greenish black from ears to BSL (which is where I got my hair cut to).

I use aloe vera and coconut oil on my hair which makes it superb shiny like those shampoo advertisement. It's kinda too shiny for me. Now I only rely on my sebum to gain shine . It's just enough.

That is very "normal" for wavier textures, you tend to lack shine. I tend to moisturize the *crap* out of it, and due to the gel I add to my stylers it comes out pretty shiny. But that's not for everyone. :flower:

It's not gonna show up for us wavies as good as it does straighties unfortunately but make your hand flatten your hair straight then take a pic, you should see if its shiny or not. Mine has a mirror thing where you can see my hand in my hair in the picture, thats the closest I get to shine.

Are you viewing your hair indoors or outdoors when you compare it?

For instance, my hair can look dull with dim indoor lighting (like in the hair typing photo), or very shiny in a sunny day, some black hair strands sometimes will even look silver but they are just reflecting the light.

For me, ACV rinse and cold water in the last steps of the wash (I wash upside down) help with shine. I still use hair dryer, in low heat mode, and finish with a cool shot.

And I agree with others, hair type influences how you see it. You could try heatless curls to get wave definition, and show more shine.

I was feeling good about my hair yesterday. On Wednesday I washed it as usual, but since I had to go out I let it air dry until it was mostly dry, then made a tight braid, folded the braid in half, and wrapped it in a cloth. I went out like this, and by the time I got home it was dry and the braid was practically untouched. I slept with it, and next day in the morning I had extremely shiny, soft hair. The extreme part is not about bragging, but rather surprise, since my hair rarely looks so shiny
Maybe it's the effect of the dyes I used last week. I always get poofy frizzy hair after my application of Manic Panic, Pravana, etc., and this is the first normal wash after that, so now it's probably moisturised but without product residue or something...
I'm sad I have to take my own pics in the mirror, though, it's very hard to make it look as it looks in real life.

As for that technical part - taking pics- you could place your phone in a strategic position, so to catch the right angle. Then set the camera timer on 10 seconds, go in front of it, pose and wait till the 10 seconds pass. This is how I do it everytime and it works. The back camera is usually better than the front one, so make sure you just place yourself in the right spot - can take a few pics ahead to see what's in the view finder.

Then set the camera timer on 10 seconds, go in front of it, pose and wait till the 10 seconds pass. This is how I do it everytime and it works. The back camera is usually better than the front one, so make sure you just place yourself in the right spot - can take a few pics ahead to see what's in the view finder.

Thank you!
About the photos - I've tried doing that. Sometimes it works, but it's hard for me to find a place at my torso level, with good enough light and where my phone won't fall xP

This is my current color. I just bought some more henna and indigo to touch up my roots.

Obviously it looks bad at the moment, I moved to oregon and havent been able to touch up my hair in over 6 months.
Theres no indian population here, so getting herbs was difficult. They had henna but no indigo, and then it was hard to tell if any of it was any good.
So I was forced to buy some online, but now I realize I have no applicator bottles and I have no place to mix my henna and I dont want to ruin another bowl.
So for now, this is my hair LOL it looks way less red indoors and in person, I really dont even know why my roots look SO red. My natural hair isnt red lol

Your hair color is very pretty, Rebeccalaurenxx!

I’ve been where you are multiple times, in terms of struggling to find henna/indigo suppliers I like. I live in an area where Indian stores open every couple of years, last for a few months, then close up. I’ve never been able to get a consistent local supply of either. Even online shopping has had its frustrations. Currently I Amazon subscribe-and-save my henna and indigo, but I’ve had to change brands multiple times as certain ones will go on and off the list. Ugh there’s always that scary trial period where I’m not certain I’ll like the new brand. At the moment, I love the indigo I have subscribe-and-saved, but my henna just went off the list. I bought it in bulk so I can stay in my same routine for a few months, but once that runs out I’ll be scrambling again. I really like the aspect of automatically having my color sent to me when I need it, so it’s frustrating when there are disruptions to that.

——

Current color varies between a cool black and a warm black/dark brown, depending on how long it’s been since a henndigo. This is what it looks like during the middle of the cycle:

Yes.
After this go I think I might switch to pravana. I’ll have to touch up more often but it’ll be consistent.
I won’t have to search and search.

Rebeccalaurenxx I'm also at a loss not being able to buy what I usually used where I'm living now... switching to something easier to buy might be a good idea. It's looking long, though, and very curly in that pic.

C_Bookworm the colour looks great, bluish black, at least in the photo. It's what I'm always aiming for :p

Thanks! Bluish Black is my dream color as well. I’ve played around with lots of different henna/indigo combinations, and different glosses like manic panic, pravana, Arctic Fox, etc. I keep hoping for that magic combination that gives the right color but isn’t an untenable amount of work. Haven’t found it yet though.

My only issue is I know something else, will create the green-blue hue I don’t like.
I prefer to either have a red or purple hue, as my natural color doesn’t look great with that green undetone.
I don’t know what else to try, other then a straight up purple, but I don’t want purple hair lol

I'm thinking of trying pravana in blue, because what I saw from piggy was that using blue or purple wont make it fade to green like say arctic fox will. So i'm gonna go for blue and god I hope I dont mess up my hair lol I really dont want blue hair but blue black will be nice. I'm really tired of this maroon color I got from henna.

You should be fine! I've been using Pravana for the same effect (i have a fresh tube of Violet bought yesterday!) and it holds better against black than other brands for my hair. Manic Panic is so-so but Arctic Fox washed out/dropped out in about 4 washes (?!).

For several years I've been creating "raven feather" hair that has a bluish/purplish/greenish effect in sunlight, but looks normal black in regular light/indoors. I adore the blue-black color too, and freak when it looks even a little "brown".

I am also interested in a hair dye called Bigen in oriental black. ANyone try this brand before? It has a japanese lady on the front.

4 inches of my roots are virgin hair. The remaining length has been bleached and box dyed brown so the length is a lighter brown with reddish hues in the light. My virgin hair is a dark brown with red undertones.

Thank you so much! You made my day :flower: I love the color of my hair 90% of the time. It still flares red (from a cool black to a warm black) in the sun, but I think that’s the just the nature of the beast when henna is involved.

Thank you! It's actually just the tiniest bit purple. :D

It's a semi. I used Arctic Fox Transylvania mixed with Arctic fox Purple Rain in about a 4:1 ratio.

From what I have read Transylvania likes to stick and fades purple so I thought the Purple rain would help it on it's journey.

My natural hair colour is dark brown; some people call it "black". It's definitely not black, although when oiled it can look very dark and sleek. My hair is currently the longest it's ever been, and I've noticed for the first time that the ends have lightened to look almost auburn sometimes. I'm a little concerned that this indicates damage, but wouldn't be surprised if so, as the ends tend to dry out, and I rather like the colour variation alongside my 4-5 white hairs!

Your hair colour is absolutely amazing, barnet_fair. While the photobleaching is damage of sorts, as it's impossible to lighten hair without any kind of damage, it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be meaningful in any way.
