I've been trimming my own hair since I joined here a couple years ago, I'm too nervous to go to a hair salon for layers but my hip length hair is in need of layers! anyone have know of a trustworthy hair stylist in the San Diego/Los Angeles area? I'm willing to travel & cost does not matter

If you've been self-trimming, you could do a compact cut and give yourself layers. The deeper you want them, the higher on your head you make the ponytail. Just a few inches? Straight out from the back of your head, with all your hair in it tightly. If you line it up so the hair just above your nape (the longest hair when it's layered) just falls out of the ponytail, you won't lose any length even if you decide you want deeper layers and redo them higher a few times.
