View Full Version : January 2015: Helix Bun

The Helix Bun is one we haven't done before. Apologies to the shorter or thicker haired who can't do this one. Is a half-up possible? Can you find a way of modifying it?

Discussion and tutorials can be found here. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=123095)

Hmm, I said.
I bet with some sectioning, I could make something that is a bit like that, I said.

Whatever that thing is, it's actually really comfortable and holds like a rock!

I am sure I tried this previously and couldn't do it at all, but I tried last night and it worked (on the third attempt)! I'm wearing my hair in a Helix bun today, and I'll put up a picture tonight when I get home.

The video I watched, by Gossamer, said that her hair (at ankle) was too long for it to work properly, but I have to say I found my (much thinner) hair is a bit too long at just past classic, so it does seem to be one that depends a lot on thickness as well as length how easy it is to do.

two_wheels, my first attempt looked much worse, and I wasn't trying anything clever with sectioning. Glad it was comfy and secure anyway ;)

Sarahlabyrinth, yours looks a bit different to the versions I've seen, but very pretty!

I tried this and my hair at hip is WAY too short. I'm going to need 6-8 inches more hair.

That is the reverse side of it - the other side looks like the "normal" helix. Yes, I love the helix bun.

Here's a picture of mine, taken at the end of the day so it is rather fluffy. You can see the tail, which I've wrapped round a couple of times, but it held all day and was really comfy!

Wow, so pretty everyone! Ashke - that is thudworthy!

I think my official hair goal is probably going to be "long enough to achieve a beautiful helix bun".
I'm not sure I can manage even twin helix buns, but I may give sectioning a go. :) In the meantime, I hope there will be more beautiful Helix Buns popping up!

DreamSheep, that is my official hair goal. It's just too long to put in the little space provided. My best guess is it will take TMI length, so that's my goal. :hifive:

Yeah, HOTM is back! :cheese:

Double yay, it's a style I can do!
My hair's a bit long to look great with this, but most often I just care that whatever style holds it up comfortably, which it does, so meh.
I'll do it and get a pick at some point this month. :)

I've been doing a baby helix (I've been calling it a cinnawrap) for a while now, and didn't know it! :p Here are some pics from 4 months back with 26.5"/BSL hair. Once I get the chance, I'll post a fresh pic (plus mayhaps a photo tutorial if you're interested) for this month as I've got a few more cms on these. :)

And here's a hurried updo shot showing where the tail ends up (top left) before it's slid under that side bit and tucked away.

Ooh I'm excited for this one! I just learned to do helix buns not that long ago (though I have about a 30% success rate--I think I need more hair!). I'll try a couple and post if I get a good one!

This bun made me almost shave my head the other day. lol. I have tried so many times to do this, and I don't know if it's my fine and thin hair, compounded with the length...but it's just not possible. It just looked like a twisted, knotted noodle on my head...not a beautiful helix.

I've been trying and trying to do this bun also. No dice. Hair's just way too short.
I even tried it as a half up and I still can't make it happen. I'll have to live vicariously through the pretty buns on this thread.

Gorgeous, everyone! I love the helix bun, it's so elegant. I had to give it a try even though I thought my hair was way too short for this one, but it's actually long enough. It's super comfortable too, which says a lot because most buns are at least slightly uncomfortable for me nowadays (sensitive scalp + heavy hair = not a good combo). I'll try to get a picture tomorrow :D

I'll try it again for real this month, but until then, here's a photo from my "wedding" reception party a few months ago (+2 years after the actual event) where I wore a helix bun. Since I have such a long tail now, I push it out to the side to make it look like an intentional poof.

Dare I ask about the rolling on the floor, Neko? :p It looks pretty cool sideways, actually! And browneyedsusan, I LOVE the bubby doubles and handywomansticks! Yay for trying out my tute (you too, bonbon58--I have layers, too, but only the last few inches, so there's hope!). As for Gossamer, there are no words. Just :thud: And I'm kinda in awe of those of you who can even attempt the original version, even if it's a tad, um, out there (Angela Rose and velorutionista).

"Out there" is a good description of mine. I've never been much for named buns, really. I just twist and twist until it is secure, then add pins/sticks/prayer.

I think this is one of the most beautiful buns out there, and I've loved looking at all of them!

I can technically do this bun (once I figured out that I do a cinnabun left handed and reversed everything in my head!), but the fineness, thinness and especially the taper (not damage, shed from medications) conspire to make it look like a tiny walnut with loops in it. :p The same reason i don't do a figure eight. Sigh.

January 20th, 2015, 09:48 AM
Can't do this bun. Not enough length and too much taper.

OK, tried a makeshift version. Did a helix bun with the upper half then wrapped the lower half around it. Not sure if this blob looks anything like the original, but it does look interesting. :) And used only one stick.

*Does anyone else think black hair is the worst for showing updo variations? They all just look like a blob.

^^^ I like Schnozzles LOL. (I mean, I really like it) I'll answer to anything. ;)

Ugh, Quasi, I don't know how it happened... I remember twisting like for making a cinnabun and looping it around two fingers (like pointer and middle fingers) Holding that loop with my magical 3rd hand, making a second loop with the rest of the hair that was hanging there and wrapping that around my thumb..I want to say I flipped that second loop somehow, like twords my left (I'm right handed) I think at this point I was pretty much out of hair. (It kind of felt like I was making a link bun, but of course I've forgotten how to do that one too..)
Grasping everything with my other hand, I extricated my fingers from the loops and threaded the stick in the loops I had made.
I think. But it's all a blur now. :sad

Until this thread popped up I was actually doing it wrong (forgetting to flip the first loop) and ended up with variant. I think this Helix-y figure 8 would work for anyone who's *this* close to having enough length for a regular Helix. My ends are easier to hide, too!

Oh that's gorgeous Crystawni :thud:

I fully expected to be posting this in the Hairstyles Gone Rogue thread, even doing it on bed hair without combing because I genuinely didn't expect it to work, but pleasantly surprised:

(I also discovered the bathroom works a bit better for lighting - not bad for a day I wrote off for a spoonie crash!)

Thanks, MusicalSpoons! You've done it beautifully (and yay for decent lighting!)! And yeah, I was in the same boat not expecting it to work (mess of the day, ex-bun hair), but once it was up, it was there to stay, and hubs snapped some pics for me to see (thus the nighttime/kitchen/rushjob). You did soooo well for not having a spoon to spare! :bowtome:

Awww, thank you! :flowers:

Heh, we'd never have been able to tell yours wasn't done at leisure!

This bun is so cool and it's great to see you guys' helix buns, Crystawni and MusicalSpoons. :crush: Crystawni, I also loved seeing your helix comparison/transformation (awesome!). :bounce:

Here's a pictorial of my baby helix for the length-challenged. :) I just tuck the ends under at the end, or you could decorate with flowers, etc.

I have done this one several times. Good for shorter hair

Can this bun be done with the hair being twisted in a clockwise direction? I simply cannot twist anti-clockwise!

Yeah I can't helix.
I tried and failed.

Hey all, inspired by seeing this thread pop up again, I tried a helix bun this morning. Added an extra loop at the bottom by accident... not the most attractive addition!

I did a helix bun for a party a few months ago too:

It's cumbersome at my length, but still doable!

AmaryllisRed in virtually all of them it seems you have the basic structure there - 1, 2 and 4 I actually think look fine! :p The other attempts mostly look like it was just the loop-wrangling that was the problem, to my eyes anyway

gossamer I love the second one - the goddess twists frame it nicely. This is one bun that makes me very grateful my ends currently taper to almost nothing when twisted; it makes the extra length very easy to hide, particularly as it's a longer bun than most :D

Sarahlabyrinth if you can mirror the instructions it should work fine being twisted in the opposite direction, I would think.

Thanks, MusicalSpoons! I do think some of my attempts went better than others but as with most other buns, I've got pokey-outey parts everywhere.

I agree, gossamer-- the twist in the front adds so much! It's a lovely photo on the whole as well.

I'm not sure if my brain could cope with that, I think I would need to see a video to be able to follow along.
