View Full Version : Night protection for curly hair

Hey all, I put my hair in 2 low braids (no hair ties) before going to bed. When it's wet, it stays untangled but dries with none of my normal curl pattern and I can basically only put it up the next day. When I let it fully air-dry down, my curls look great that night, but the next morning after being braided they are totally smooshed and frizzy. To top that off, the ends of each braid become a tangled mess whenever I braid it dry, and I think it's actually damaging more than doing good. I don't want to bun it overnight because hair ties leave dents in my hair.
Are there any styles that will protect my hair at night but also preserve my curl pattern? Thanks!

I love my sleep cap. Have you tried one before? My hair is not as curly as yours but the cap definitely helps to preserve my wave pattern better than anything else I have tried. It also prevents tangles etc and seems to spread oils around. My hair usually comes out all shiny and pretty in the morning.

Another vote for a sleep cap! SilkyCocoon on Etsy has great ones :)

Do you leave your hair loose under the sleep cap?

Have you tried pineappling (http://www.refinery29.com/pineapple-hair-benefits)? I heard its really good for curl preservation. Try it out and see if it works

Let your hair dry completely and then at night put it up lose in a silk bonnet. I recommend adorabella baby caps.
In the morning, your curls may be a little smushed, but you can lightly spritz them, shake your head, and they'll bounce right back.
If you put your hair in your bonnet damp or wet, it just acts like mega-plopping. SUPER curly, but I find it uncomfortable to sleep with a bag of wet hair on my head.

I would say sleep cap/ bonnet. My hair does this too. It becomes straight or stretched out in places if I try to braid it and sleep on it. I have to let it dry while it is all out and same for sleeping. Only fully wetting it brings back my curls. Misting is not effective.

I see Adorabella's bonnets have a elastic. Does it leave marks on skin? Also, does the bonnet slip away?

You can tie the ribbon to tighten or loosen them. Mine stays put, but I am not a restless sleeper.
