View Full Version : Fuel the obsession!

If you've read some of my earlier posts on here, you would know that I'm obsessed with Kate Winslet's hair in Titanic. It's shiny, not frizzy, curly, thick, doesn't drag her face down (at least not IMO). Anyway, I have made a secret "shrine" of images of her hair in Titanic. It's basically a word document with pics of her hair.

I have linked the document above. Hopefully it works. Anyway, what sort of haircut do you think she has? Layers? Tapering? Ideally I would love to get my hair to look like hers (I have naturally curly hair), but I don't know how to get a cut that's more similar to hers.

The way it cascades downward is so nice! There's so much definition too! I know that Kate got pincurls put in every night to achieve this look. I'm jealous of how good her hair looks.

I don't know, but it looks nice. You have pretty hair, why don't you try pin curls and see what happens. When I do them they never come out all the same length which may explain how Kates hair looks (as well as good lighting and a stylist on set)

^ That could be, because her hair looks different lengths a lot. I wish that there was a non-damaging way to do permanent pincurls hehe

I had the same obsession with Kate's Titanic hair. I had to have it. Years ago I dyed my hair red, put in extensions, and got up at 5 am everyday in order to curl it in order to make it look just like hers, haha. My hair is naturally dirty blonde and straight, so sustaining this look was a lot of work. I had to spray it to death with hairspray just to get the curls to hold. It was beautiful though, I got compliments all the time (people even asked if it was my natural color).

Anyway, when I was doing it I had the "V" haircut. It's still my "dream" hair, but not realistic for me if I want to grow my hair long & healthy :( . I wish I had curls like you do! (Don't worry, I had a "shrine" of pictures of her hair as well :P )

We all have had a hair "crush", at one point or another (and that's good, as long as you don't destroy your hair in the process of imitating that style). Your hair will never look exactly the same as hers, I think that's a realistic point that you should have in mind. Your hair has naturally a wonderful curl pattern (I'm sure that Kate wished that her hair was naturally curly, so that she didn't have to pin curl every night!). I reckon that your hair would have that romantic, beautiful look of hers, if you'd go for a mix of henna + cassia, and let your hair grow (around waist length). I wouldn't mess up with your curls :flower:

Yeah I would never damage it in order to get my hair more similar to Rose's. I will try to get as close to it as I can, though!

I've added a few recent pics of my hair from the back. It looks like my hair is in more of a "V" shape than Rose's - should I get that "V" cut out if I wanted my hair to look more like hers?

Your hair is beautiful, CostaRita! I don't have any advice for you cut-wise, but if you wanted your hair to look more like the Kate Winslet pics, then you should encourage clumping as much as possible, as her curls are more clumped than yours. What is your current styling routine? Are you CG? Over on NaturallyCurly.com, one way that some people encourage clumps in through using the "Super Soaker Method," where you add water back to your hair after adding your products and styling. I'm trying to find a good video that illustrates it, but not having much luck.

ETA: found the original post on this method over at NC: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/general-discussion-about-curly-hair/81176-super-soaker-method-promoting-clumps-updated-video-link.html The video doesn't work anymore, but her description is quite thorough.

If you want her colour then you should look into a weak henna and cassia mix to get that lovely red. Bu maybe the overall style is as important, wear nice dresses, drink champagne from pretty glasses :D

hehe. I've never heard of clumping. What do you mean by "her curls are more clumped than yours?"

I used to be CG, but now my leave-in conditioner has some cones in it and I've been using DevaCurl's low-poo every other day for cleansing. I heard that co-washes are basically re-branded conditioners, so I stopped using it. I might add sufactants eventually (not SLS, but others).

For styling, I use SheaMoisture's Curl and Style Milk. In the morning I just squirt some into my hand and put it in, nothing fancy.
Here are picks of it "styled" - in the sig, that's after combing.

Is co-washing more conducive to clumping? How could I encourage clumping? *The next obsession begins*......

The next obsession has begun! Aahahha! Okay, so clumping is when your curls stay together in curl units. That is, every individual hair lies next to the other hairs that curl in the same way. I'm not sure how else to describe it, other than that clumped curls are like fat ropes versus skinny ropes. Does that make any sense?

Regarding CO-washing, I'm not sure if it helps or not, BUT cones do NOT encourage clumping. Having said that, if there's a reason you are using cones, then you should keep doing so. But it there's not, then I would quit the cones and try a different leave-in.

Finally, you said "that's after combing" about your styled pic. While your pic looks gorgeous, I can tell you 100% for sure that your hair will never look like the Kate Winslet pics if you comb it AFTER you have put your products in. Combing breaks up curls/clumps! The only time to comb or detangle is when your hair is full of conditioner, in the shower. Then, you should run water through it, add your products (what do you use besides leave-in?) and finger-comb them through, then do NOT touch until it's dry. I'll bet you a bundle that this will get you closer to what you are looking for! :D

Yeah they way I do it is in the shower I'll wash with the DevaCare, rinse, get out and put co-wash in it as a detangler, then comb it in the mirror. I'll try combing before rinsing!

I tried to follow suggestions for clumping. Instead of combing after getting out of the shower and putting in conditioner, I combed in the shower with conditioner in and then rinsing out. After rinsing, I didn't touch it.

I was surprised at the before and after! *keep in mind that the before pics were taken before showering at night and the after pics were taken after showering at night with the new combing method*

Cowashing made my hair clump better.
