Sleep cap/ bonnet problems

Last night I washed my hair and the moisture of my damp hair caused my sleep cap to get red all over my favorite pillow case. Does this ever happen to you?

Are there ones that don't bleed the color and how do you fix this? I feel like it's really sensitive to any moisture.

Also, for a while, it got so oiled up that I would get irritated skin from wearing it, but that hasn't happened for a long time and now it seems to have a backwards effect: my hair is significantly drier in the morning, as if the silk is absorbing most of the oil... Even though it's not getting oil residue on my skin from contact on my neck, etc...

So what's going on?

Have you washed it yet? With the first washing my deep purple sleep cap bled. A lot. The water looked deep pink and awesome! Even took a picture of it. :o

I sincerely doubt it'd bleed much (or at all) if you gave it a thorough (but careful) cleaning with a mild shampoo (not much) in a basin of water.

Edit: Naturally your sleep cap might lose some of its vivid colour when washing it, but for me personally that didn't matter (and it's still deep purple). :)

My issue, I have the "silkycocoon" and I love it because it doesn't have elastic and it doesn't fall off. But I can never get it tight enough so that it's not falling down over my eyes. And I always seem to get nape hair caught in the strings when I tie it, putting it on upside down or normal, so I don't know if I'm not doing it right.

I wouldn't put your hair in it wet. That's for sure. I think that's the whole problem.

Could it be the fabric it's not color fast? Maybe a cheap grade of fabric it's a guess.

I do like the elastic though. If I get a new one, which silk ones can people recommend with elastic?

sometimes red/pink stains on fabric can be mildew...i've lost quite a few pillows and pillowcases to it by washing daily and going to bed with wet hair, pre-lhc. the fabric never got a chance to dry and mildewed instead. now i make sure my pillow gets direct sunlight during the day if my hair was very wet.

I put my hair in my cap wet all the time, after the first wash where there was a lot of dye release. The dampness seeps through to my pillow, but there are no issues with color transfer.

It may be the cap you own.

If you like elasticized hats, I got mine from https://www.etsy.com/shop/ORHatsbyCarole. I haven't had any dye transfer either, but I don't put my hair in it wet very often.

I have bought a couple of big square silk scarves at the thrift stores. Is there any way to easily make these into a sleep cap? I sleep in caps, but the material is not nearly as nice as the scarves. I have no crafting skills and no sewing machine, so I need for you to instruct me as if I were a five year old child.... I looked at some things online, but wondered if any of you had any experience and success with making EASY sleep caps. Thanks!

I have used my silkycoccoon bonnets with wet hair or oiled hair, when I like, with no problem.

Elly, if you have enough scarf material to cut a square at about 22 by 22 inches, you should be able to stitch a casing (hem) around the edges of however much width you need for ribbon or elastic and in that hem, which isnt overly pretty, just the edges folded over on themselves, the corners overlapping, use a safety pin to weave through the ribbon or elastic, with it long enough to go around your head and close off as needed. I did this once with a cotton sleep cap, just to get used to one....

The hard candy bonnets are plastic lined bonnets that you can deep condition in which I think is genius! Be careful with these because if you do not choose the double lined or the upside down cake option your hair will not be touching the the silkiest part in your sleep.

I have one of her bonnets and it is HUGE I like it for if I sleep in silk rollers or something. My mother chooses this for every night because she has very curly hair full of body.

both of these vendors have good quality caps just depends on what you like.....like I said the double lined is a big plus in both of these. Btw mine have lasted for over a year and they still aren't old.And EboniCurls has the cutest hooded scarves made of silk for day protection as well.
