She wanted to know if I could do this on my hair, I told her I'd see what I can do. Anyone know how? Instructions?

Impressive! It look like two Dutch braids down the back and then the ribbon is laced through one side of the braid loops and then ponied at the bottom of the braids instead of merging them and picking up the rest of the hair like normal to continue braiding. (I think a fully braided version would look even cooler!)

Looks like 2 lace braids, tied to each other with ribbon.

Yeah it's called a corset braid. As other people said, two lace braids laced up with ribbon. They're pretty easy. Just lace them up like you would lace up shoes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpGnasJIoaQ This tutorial explains it pretty well I think

Here's a diagram of what I think is going on in that photo:http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w225/07Erzbet/121114Intricatebraiddiagramhowto.jpg (http://s177.photobucket.com/user/07Erzbet/media/121114Intricatebraiddiagramhowto.jpg.html)Intricat e braid diagram tut:
1 Gently detangle hair and comb away, back from face
2 Section hair from just above tip of right ear, around back of head, to tip of left ear
3 Gather all hair ABOVE the part, comb out gently, and clip or ponytail it
4 Divide the clipped/ponytailed hair into two sections.
5 Take the left section of the ponytailed hair and clip it to the left hair that is loose
6 Clip all hair at the bottom and pin it up so it can't get mixed with the rest of the hair
Braiding the right side:
7 Take the right section of the ponytailed hair
8 Divide it into 3 sections
9 Make ONE crossover (that is: left section over middle and hold, rake strands down to keep them separate//right section over middle and hold, rake strands down to keep them separate.
10 NEXT: ADD IN small section of loose hair from RIGHT hand side to the RIGHT hand section of the crossover. Once all the hair has been added, take ALL the hair in the RIGHT section and cross it over the Middle section. Pinch/hold, rake down strands. Take all the hair in the LEFT section and cross over the Middle section. Pinch/hold, rake down strands. Take another SMALL section from the loose RIGHT hair, add it to the RIGHT crossover section. When all hair has been added to the right side, bring the right side over the middle section/pinch/hold, rake down the strands.
11 Continue in this way, making SURE to rake down the strands each crossover you make.
12. When you reach your nape, tie off with a hair friendly elastic or clip (which will be removed later.
Now, repeat all steps with the other side of the hair.
Working from nape to ends:
Make one crossover, remove clip. Adjust braid for comfort, continue braiding until you reach the end. Tie off with hair friendly elastic.
Final touch: adding the colored ribbon to make a lattice effect down the braids...
You'll have to experiment with a piece of string to see what length you will need to finish your style. Also be sure the ribbon you choose is narrow enough.
Thread the ribbon thru the uppermost crossover of your style..in the same manner as if you were threading shoelaces thru your sneakers. You might want to use a Topsy Tail tool, or a large darning needle, to pull the ribbon through each braid.
When you reach the bottom, make a tie, then a bow, et voila! One beautiful, intricate braided style! Go to it!

Yeah I agree it looks like two lace dutch braids (hair comes in from one side only, as you can probably see, the outside section)
then a ribbon shoelace effect down the middle.
At the top there is definitely one iteraton of a single dutch braid then it splits off into the two braids.

Good luck! :)
