Hey guys,
If I hadn't posted it all over the place yet, I am getting married next year! We're looking at late August or early September right now. Here's the situation: My hair is at shoulder in the back, and collarbone in the front. Right now I've averaged my hair growth to be around .7"/month. I know this is super ahead of time but I'm kinda worried about my hair being long enough to be able to do an updo. I should have around 4 to 6 inches of growth by then (if my average remains the same), but then I should be around APL or in between APL and BSL because I'm tall. Do you think an updo will be achievable at this length? I'm thinking something with curls/waves as well since my hair has 0 volume and I don't want my scalp to be shining everywhere. In my mind I had expected my hair to be at my goal length, but darling fiance sprung the question way sooner than he said he would, and we didn't want to wait too long because of aging grandparents (and pure excitement). I know it's dumb to be worried about hair length (in relation to everything else), but as it's so slippery and short I can't even get it to stay in a peacock twist right now, just a stubby ponytail. I'm considering getting extensions so that there will be enough hair to actually pull up... but I've never done those before, and I don't want to damage anything significantly.

Now, you can make a Gibson Tuck, with the front loose and curled, but you'll have lots of options by then.

Congratulations on your engagement!!!

I had between APL and BSL length hair when I got married. You really have a lot of options with that length!
I also have very fine and really straight hair so it was important for me to show some volume. I went to a hairdresser for my wedding (btw CONGRATULATIONS!:) ) because I didn't want to do it on my own.
I had french braids on the sides and my lengths were loose and curled. To get some volume I had to sleep with hair rollers :p

I don't have a good picture but here you can see at least a bit of it

Gwen stefani has some good updo inspiration for shorter haired gals. Some of it is like "thanks but no thanks gwen!" but some of it is really cool.

LilithMoon on YouTube does a LOT of tutorials for fancy updos at medium (shoulder-to-APL) lengths. See if anything catches your fancy? (https://www.youtube.com/user/lilithedarkmoon/search?query=medium)

My hair was a little past APL when I got married and I did a French twist with a fancy French twist comb. Super easy and elegant looking, even if I did have to take it down and re do it with a little help from mom halfway through the day. Let me see if I can find a picture . . .

ETA: Here are some photos.

Also, I will say that you could easily do a French Twist with hair much shorter than mine was at the time! I actually had trouble tucking in the ends, even then. Definitely look into getting a good French twist comb if you decide to go this route. It doesn't have to be expensive - I got mine from China for like $8 - but it works much better than anything else I've tried.

I second LilithMoon, she's got some great styles for shortish hair. And don't worry, I'm in the same boat; I constantly think to myself "I can't get married until I'm at least at solid waist!" but since SO and I are both students, we're waiting to finish school which should be a few years since we're going to grad school soon. But I still keep my eyes out for styles I might want to try for the impending wedding.

I agree with those who have said to check out youtube, there is an awful lot you can do with hair at that length you probably just need a little inspiration :)
And congratulations on your engagement!

Congrats!

My hair was at shoulder length (much shorter than yours will be) when I got married. I had intended on doing a very structural updo at that length, but instead my fiancée wanted me to wear my hair half up and curled. I ended up getting clip in extensions that did not damage my hair at all. At the end of the night, I was able to take them out.

Thank you for all the links and suggestions! :) I just finished my last exam yesterday, so now it's on to job hunting and "official" wedding planning! Eek! The Lilith Moon lady has some crazy skills!

Hi guys...
So it's about 2 months away from the wedding. I still haven't decided what to do with my hair. My fiancé wants me to wear it down but it's barely past shoulder length plus I have a cathedral length veil so I am going to have the extra weight of the veil to contend with. I'm thinking I'll have to go with a bun and anchor the veil in it as my hair can't even hold up a short veil because it's so thin and fine. I was also thinking about just pinning the sides back so it'll "look" like it's down, but I don't know how to stick the veil on then. I think just wearing it down will look dumb as it's way too short and will look even shorter compared to the dress/veil. I was wanting to wear it up to hide the shortness lol.

What about half up? You could do something like this https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/de/90/f7/de90f748a7916959cb41f41c2b3757a7.jpg and that can be the anchor, and still have the rest down around your shoulders.

I am considering that. I'm also thinking about asking my (future) sister in law about borrowing some extensions, then I would have more thickness to either hold the veil or to be able to do a half up. I haven't done a half up in at least 6 years as my hair is so thin it just looks like strings hanging in the back on the bottom... Lol. My circumference is barely 1.5".

You could also just leave some tendrils down around your face and put the rest back?
