Hi everyone! I've been having a terrible time with GERD and stomach pain and I finally gave in and started a 14 day course of Nexium this morning. I Googled it and some have said it caused terrible shedding, but haven't found any information on this forum, the one I trust the most.

Do you have any experience taking Nexium (or Prilosec) and have had hair loss or not any loss? I really need to take this stuff, so I'm going to have to do it whether I lose hair or not. Rats and Mice!

If you did lose hair did it grow back?

Thank you for any information you have to share.

If you have a choice take Cimetidine. One of its off label use is hair growth.

My best friend takes prescription strength nexium (I know its higher than OTC) and she calls it her magic purple pill. It has been the only thing to help her severe acid reflux / Hiatal hernia problems. I have to say she dyes her hair light blonde regularly, blow dries it, and straightens it everyday and I'm terrible jealous of how thick her hair is. It's naturally curly and I love her curls, but she hates them and straightens them. She's taken some of my hair care advice and she said she hasn't noticed much difference, other than her hair looks less dry. She said she didn't experience any hair loss or any other side effects of her "magic purple pill" :p LOL

My mother took Nexium for several years straight (her doctors didn't realize it's not meant to be taken that long continuously; it can speed up or cause osteoporosis if taken for years and years and years with no break) and as far as I know she never lost any hair. She does have thick, wavy hair in a...sort of pixie cut. So it's hard to tell, but she never complained about hair loss so I don't think it was an issue.

Thank you for such wonderful feedback! That gives me one less thing to worry about. I got to the point where I had to take something even if I lost my hair. I had tried everything else.

Thank you all again, you are great.

I have taken prilosec and did not have any noticeable hair loss.

I was going to suggest this. I started using Prilosec and I hope it doesn't cause hair loss. I went to the doctor after being sick for two weeks I found out what I thought was heartburn was an ulcer. I fell to the ground with pain my brother called 911 but I didn't go. I went the next day to my doctor and I'm starting Prilosec.

Oh Jacqueline, an ulcer! I'm sorry you have been sick. I'm taking Nexium because my dr. gave me free samples. When I run out though, I'll switch to Prilosec because my insurance will pay for part of it but not Nexium.

If Prilosec is as good as the Nexium I'm taking, you should be feeling better in a few days. I hope so. You are too nice of a person to be in pain.

Thanks. I hope I'm well over night but I guess two weeks is a good cure rate. That's what I said at the dr office an ulcer, me have an ulcer. Then my brother calling 911 he told the dispatcher I was breathing, sweating on my head, on my knees in the kovac's parking lot and drooling. The first responders came by that time I was able to speak and my brother is like see she needs to go. He was right I needed to go then. I went to the doctor the next day at 9 am.

I've taken Prilosec with no shedding, but you should check to see if Nexium has a rebound effect. Not sure if it would kick in after just two weeks, but as far as I know most of the acid blockers do rebound and it's something doctors don't tell you.

I just need to take it long enough to heal the esophagus and stomach lining. I'll keep an eye out for the rebound thing though. I seem to go through this every year at this time, probably related to stress and over-eating!

I had my first ulcer at 25, but this isn't as bad. Not nearly as bad as what Jacqueline is going through!

I'm going to look up the side effects of Prilosec I'm wondering if there are rebound effects. I think my ulcers have been a while in the making. I do hope my Prilosec helps.

You need to find the cause of the ulcers. I had ulcers for years before I found a doctor that would do that for me so they could be cured instead of just treating the symptoms. It was a simple fix once I found the right doctor.

Im going to a specialist at the first of the year. I hope to find out what's causing this and if surgery is needed I'm doing it. Next will be finding someone to take Damien in while I'm doing this.

I'm on day 4 of Nexium and I'm feeling soooo much better. I'm hoping you are doing better Jacqueline on your Prilosec. (I think Prilosec and Nexium are pretty much the same). I don't wish surgery on anyone! But sometimes we have to.

I had been in more discomfort than I realized now that I'm taking Nexium. I'm sleeping much better and generally in a better mood.

I am feeling better. Damien is having a hay day being in charge. He done out laundry at the laundromat. To my surprise the place is still standing. He dried it and all. He won't let me do anything until my two week check up. He did have help on the dryers at the laundromat. He tried to fold our clothes. He has fixed our meals corn flakes and toast. I have ate more toast then I care to. I'm hoping no surgery. I do feel better even though Damien acts like I'm dying.

I stopped the Nexium and will continue with Pepcid for a while (and Tums!).

It might not be related to Nexium but I've noticed quite a bit of extra shedding in the last two days. Maybe about an increase of 40%. BUT I haven't felt well since before Halloween with flu, pneumonia, GERD flare etc. So my diet has been less healthy, no exercise, more family get togethers (stress) so I'm not surprised I'm having some extra shedding. I've heard that a month after having fevers you get extra shedding.

So I don't want to say Nexium causes shedding and discourage anyone from using this medicine. One way that I look at it is that if I had NOT taken Nexium, the continued stomach pain could have caused even more shedding because of the stress on my body.

It's too complicated to say what causes shedding. My instinct says this time it was from poor diet since mid October, fevers and stress.
