What a beautiful bun. Unfortunately, it will be at least 2 years until I have enough hair to even try to fake this bun.

Beautiful! And even simple enough for me to manage, which is saying a lot. I've been doing mostly sectioned buns because it seems like anything else just hurts my scalp and pulls all day long. Thank you for posting it.:)

That's way easier than the finished product looks! I can't wait to try it!

I tried it today and it worked well even though my hair isn't that thick. Unfortunately I forgot to take a proper picture of it, just took some with my cellphone, but I don't think I can transfer them to my computer. So you'll just have to believe me that it was pretty! ;)

Looks great, and I want to try this too. Not all complex braid styles work on my hair, which isn't all that thick, but this looks like it might be successful.

Ooooh! I like this one! Might have to try it and see if my hair is long enough for it at some point...

Yes, absolutely. And I find it to be true of all sectioned buns: they tend to look complicated and unique, but they tend to be easy and also super-comfy, because of all that weight distribution. :)

That. Is. Awesome. Almost exactly what I've been looking for! Of course, her half-up braid is almost as big as ALL of my hair braided, but that just means that I can keep doing this style forever as my hair gets longer! Gotta try it tomorrow.

Definitely going to try this soon though I'm not sure how it will look because my hair is so thin.

I'm also hoping that since I have way less hair/density, not length, that it will look as cool. I love the way it was given/the picture step by step instructions. I could definitely do, if I can get my bobby pin/hair pin dexterity a bit sharper!

Question about those hair bands she uses. When I do half ups, I would like to use those http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/studio-35-beauty-silicone-rubberbands/ID=prod6031349-product, which it looks like she is using (clear, of course) because since I don't have that much hair, with a half up, in normal damage free bands, like these: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/scunci-no-damage-elastics/ID=prod6156775-product. they become too bulky and I Have to wrap them like 6 times, it's just too much band/material for that little section of hair. What do you all think of those silicone bands, they are just much lighter, smaller, and seem like a perfect fit for a half up

I use the little clear silicone ones all the time. I often just snip them out when I'm done so I don't damage my hair by pulling them out.

You might get away with using no elastics at all. :) When I did similar style to this one (but it was based on 3 braids instead of 2 braids and a swept section), I just pinned everything in place with u-pins. Braids that get pinned don't really require elastics IMHO.

I can see you pinning the braids, but how to gather that top/upper half section, you need an elastic

AmyBeth

I did it! And it's so easy, and looks really good. And it's comfortable, too. I only use an elastic for the top braid, the lower braid just gets tucked in with a spin pin or two. I coil the sections somewhat loosely, and the resulting bun is so huge it looks like it's swallowing my head (a look I've always been envious of!):p

Lovely look! If only my whole-head braid were anywhere near as thick as her half-up braid! (Puny Bun Club problems, lol)

To be honest, I never use an elastic on top/upper section either, and it would work a bit like this (http://www.frannyslonghairstyles.com/Halfups/3_Strand_Braid_Half-Up_View_1.jpg)photo I found online - it may not be as neat and perfectly balanced, but it won't show in the final updo. It might be harder to get the center exactly perfect without an elastic (because a pony-holder centers everything so well), but you can place the braided bun in center by pinning it anyway. I do think it's a more hair-friendly option: I used to get hairs caught/tangled in ponytail holders all the time, and I prefer to avoid them.

But Meteror, you do use an elastic on the end of the braid, right?

I just did this style today and for the top section, i started with a dutch braid. Im sure a french braid would work too. I dutch braided just to the ears and then finished the braid and continued from there. I dont like to use elastics by my head because they pull and cause tangles for me, but i used elastics on the ends of the braids.

No, I just tuck and pin the ends. You might be able to do this depending on how slippery your hair is, of course.
I have to admit that it doesn't hold as neatly without elastics (ends can start sticking out after a few hours) and it probably won't work well on short hair, because braid ends might be too short to allow for any slight unraveling that can happen during the day. I probably need more pins than I would use if I used elastics. It's a trade-off. :)

That sounds really great! And I bet the bun looks even more interesting with a French/Dutch braid as the base. :D

Hmpf.. I tried this today and it did not look good. It looks so pretty in the picture, but it was too flat. I like flat buns, but this was too flat. My hair was rather oily and limp today since its wash day. I will try again tomorrow.

I started it kind of low on my head so in the end it was hidden by the bun, but if one started higher up, i think it would add a really interesting look.

Tomorrow when you try it again, start the top braid as a dutch braid. It adds some volume for the bun.

Tried this today and it did not look great but I am stylistically challenged and this was my first attempt at a braided bun. It fell apart easily after a few minutes of chasing my kid around. Going to attempt it again though.

Ok, just tried this again. It went much better but I do need to braid the half-braid tighter at the top because it was too loose and poked out of the bun in a weird way. I think it would definitely look better with the top French braided too.
