I'm currently trying out bantu knots to see if I can get my hair to have a more natural looking curl.
Besides that what else would give a similar curl that starts close to the root?
I've considered scrunching but for my hair to do that I have to dampen it and clip it up and let it dry over night (probably in more than one clip to get it all to curl/wave well enough)
Do fishtail braids give good enough waves for this and how would you get them to start close to the root as french fishtails have always slipped out as I've tried to do them (most french braids slip out somewhat on my hair)

Pin curls, or rag curls work wonders without heat, but make sure you get the perm papers and do it like Torrin Page suggests (look it up on YouTube). I did rag curls with fairy tale ends and I had to cut them out of chunks of my hair, which ruined my hemline for a long time. However, even heat styling does not give me curls that will stay, and the rag curls did. When I used the papers to protect the fairy tale ends of my hair, it turned out perfectly.

Just do what Torrin (hair Goddess) recommends and not what I (recovering hair moron) did, and you'll be fine.

MadPirateBippy took the words right out of my fingers and make sure your hair isn't too wet, just damp. Roll them up as far as you can. Maybe put a hairnet over it, they're cheap.

I can't speak for rag curls, but pin curling gave me spiral-y curls (eats up a ton of length). Fishtail braids will give you waves, but they're sort of angular and almost crimped looking. For the look in the photo, my personal favorite is double dutch braids on damp hair. *digs around* I have a picture somewhere...

'Scuse the wonky ends - you do a little bantu knot on the bottom or a mini rag curl to make sure the bottom gets properly curled too.
