How about Cary Fukunaga's man braids (http://www.allure.com/beauty-trends/blogs/daily-beauty-reporter/2014/08/26/cary-fukunaga.jpg)?

I think the best I'm gonna get from my growing-his-hair-out DH is a braid. He's already nixed buns. I guess I'm saving all those cool shorter ebony forks, metal forks, anything else rustic for nothing. I was holding out with a hope.

Great look!

My husband already has the beard to match him. Apparently a year of growing a beard for him is a lot more impressive than a year of growing hair lol. But he is doing good so far.

I live in NY, and from time to time, I'll see a guy with a bun. Most often, it's a bun/pony hybrid made with an elastic. But once in a while it's a real live deliberate bun. And inevitably, my heart goes pitty pat. :heartbeat

I never saw a real life man bun before. The first flickr pictures show amazing hair and I could only dream of having a bun that looks as good as these men's. However, I prefer either long loose hair on men (Native American style) or quite short stylish cut. That doesn't mean that these guys do rock wearing a bun, it's just too strange and misplaced for my liking.

The guy in #4 looks almost exactly like a history prof I once had, if he wore a man bun :p My husband was actually the one who called it, first: he had the same prof and he took one look at the list and said "Hey, that guy looks like Dr _____!"
I think the only way I could have had more of a crush on that guy was if he had long hair.

My husband also has long hair (mid back, used to be in between waist and hip) and I keep trying to get him to wear it in a bun sometimes. It would look great with his bone structure; he's Japanese and his family were samurai on his mom's side so he could even call it a cultural thing, but he's always like "Yeah... I'm too lazy to learn how to do a bun"

Sometimes you just have to do stuff, even if it means you have to go beyond the boundaries of what you think other people think of you.

How you present and hold yourself will determine more how people perceive you than the details of your bone structure or beardlessness. To help you there are plenty of hair toys that aren't feminine.

Anyway, good luck. And remember, you may be surprised by what people like and perceive.

I think I don't fit this category because I don't call my updos a certain name like "man buns," instead I call them according to their proper names. I think LHC has a huge influence in how I create my updos because I grew my bald head of hair here since the beginning of my hair growth journey. The one big lesson I've learned on here is to embrace and continue to be a unique individual. I think a lot of men would not recognize me had I not changed my avatar to a semi face pic since my action pictures blends in with all the other action pictures in this community.

I'm glad I don't fit this mainstream fad because I've grown hair beyond what would be expected in a man's hair in the dull conventional society. I'm probably alone in this for my gender, but I like my buns to look neat, kemp, and highly presentable. I take the time to detangle my hair so therefore I need to place careful attention in my updos. I don't care if doesn't fit conventional notions of "masculinity" of which I continue to defy and challenge. Plus I've included my pic when I had a faux bob to show y'all I have masculine features to balance out the updos I wear. I'm not afraid to use many types of hair toys. To me, i just can't create some of that awful messed up poof plopped on the head look because my hair is at a length that if I tried to recreate that, it would be way too damaging and I'd end up with a tangly mess!! Anyways, I agree with Trolleypup in that it's how you present yourself as a human being that matters the most. I think the only people that notice my updos in real life are women in general! In fact I catch them looking at my updo wondering how I did it, and then they start to fiddle with their own hair like I have awoken their consciousness or something. Some women I even caught took out their compact mirror to see if their hair was ok after looking at my hair while I was waiting in line at Starbucks.

Just gonna go ahead and say it, l immediately thought of Rowie when i looked through that link. Rowie you could easily be featured on that list, and my response would have been the same. I totally get what you are saying though, Rowie, the men on this board are the originals. You guys made long hair, well maintained, and styled, awesome before "man buns" became "a thing". Ya'll do it WAY better in my opinion. Maybe this is because long hair is far more than a passing style fad for you guys? These guys can be that rough with their hair because like as not in a year it'll be shorn off.

U both have expressed exactly what I meant....... Its basically a hairstyle and before the whole man bun trendy name...
Its the pure quiality, beautifulness and effort us men put in our manes to make ourselves like we feel and the most high expression and not to just be put into the category of this trendy current fad

Rowie I hope some day I can be able to be just as good as you are to make your buns looks so awesome and neat...... I just can do elastic/scrunchie buns because my hair is so slipery for hair toys..... and most of the time Im quite minimalistic :p

rowie, you are one of my hair idols. Not one of my male hair idols -- one of my hair idols. I really appreciate the "perfection" of your updos. I, too, prefer kempt to unkepmpt, on men and women -- and certainly on myself.

I think it's awesome that you use all kinds of hairtoys. I must confess that I would probably look twice if I saw a guy wearing a Ficcare in real life, but that's only because I've never seen one before. Heck, I remember the first time I saw a guy with a ponytail. It was secured with an elastic band. I thought to myself, "Well, heck... What else would he secure it with?" A Ficcare in an updo? Heck! It's one of the best hair toys out there. Why wouldn't a guy use one?

I view the "man bun" fad as somewhat silly. To me, "man bun" means "hair that's barely long enough to make a bun".

In contrast, what I and other LHC'ers have are real buns. :)

Yeah, I'm going to. I tried for a half hour on my own and totally failed. :pThe cinnabun is pretty easy. The hair first has to be twisted, and then coiled around itself. Putting in the sticks is the tricky part. The sticks are inserted into the thick part of the hair, pointing towards the scalp. They are then brought parallel to the scalp and go under, and then through the remaining hair. This provides enough tension to keep the bun up.

I learned this technique by watching LHC'ers at meets. :)

Ed, I'm proud to say that you have at least 25% of my hair skills. I can do 4 buns:

Equilibrium bun: great for the longer lengths.
Cinnablob: not even a proper cinnamon bun, I can't do those. In this one, after the first coil is made, the rest of the coils go underneath, and are then sort of shoved up through the center of the first coil.
Lazy wrap: this one took practice, but it's not hard and it is well suited to sticks.
Paranda braided bun: this one is hard. Don't try it.

@Shadow Walker -

I recommend the nautilus bun, personally. I have TBL hair too, and even my slippery hair holds this one decently without sticks or anything. Plus, nautilus takes literally ten seconds to do once you get the hang of it. I'm fairly new to the bun world myself - less than a month.

This lovely gal breaks it down nicely. I have yet to get the hang of any other quick-fix bun.

It is worth learning how to put one's hair up in a bun. The bun keeps the hair out of trouble.
Ed
Absolutely. I recently started working with CNC milling and grinders, so loose long hair is just asking for trouble. Initially I used an english braid that I simply tucked into my shirt when needed. Fine with cooler weather, no good when it's hot and humid hehe. Ordered myself a flexi-8 quicksmart, and now before I go to work, I detangle and do a quick lazy-wrap bun on my MBL going on WL hair. Easy, neat and secure. :)

So many good tips in here for all the fumble fingers. I could even use a few of the tips. I am also afflicted with fumble fingers.

So my tips (as I can't do very many buns this is pretty short): if your hair is slippery don't try to learn new buns with freshly washed hair, U pins are awesome, don't make your buns so tight they pull your hairs out by the roots, tangle teezers are awesome, be confident, be patient, and utilize all the resources available on LHC and YouTube.

So, out of curiosity, what was it that finally drove you to bunning up? Unfortunate accident? Near miss? Just seemed like the time was right?I think it was the realization that my length has remained in bad shape for years. I have a lot of breakage, and this hasn't gotten better despite LHC-quality hair care. So, I am trying buns. I can already tell the difference - when bunned, my hair is no longer tangled when I take it down at the end of the day.

You'll think differently if your hair gets that long someday. Preservation and protection of the hair becomes a priority when it reaches a length where a two-minute walk across a parking lot in the slightest breeze creates agonizing tangles.

Very true indeed, when I was growing my hair it never passed though my mind to wear a bun.... Once my hair was past mid back and ponytails were becoming more a problem than a solution I began the long road to master a bun that suited my hair texture and healed scalp pain trouble. Now I can make one in about 15 seconds and holds amazingly well like a rock all day long.... and somehow I have this weird feel of having short hair again with it :)

Very true indeed, when I was growing my hair it never passed though my mind to wear a bun....

My first time growing my hair long, I grew it for six years. Six years! But it never got any longer than mid-back length. I was working outside, and left it loose all the time. No braids, no ponytail, certainly not even any buns. And the lower half or so of each and every hair strand was dry, damaged and brittle. I'd comb my hair and there'd be hundreds of broken-off dried ends all over my shirt. On windy days there would be knots the size of my fist.

This time I'm growing it with much more care; its been less than four years and its already longer than it ever was before. Only dry areas are the layers which frame my face - my bangs, if I still had bangs. They're down to my nipples in front. But the rest of my hair is much healthier.... Fine and wispy, a little thin, but healthier and longer.

PLUS what's extra great about keeping hair up is that it's a very forgiving hairstyle. Oils and things(hair treatments) can be added to the ends to help them stay sleek and well moisturized and nobody needs to know. Everyday can be a good hair day.:cheer:

Posting an update on my bun progress as im no longer a human porcupine with more bobby pins than hair...lol The layers are containing themselves better anyways. I've worn it higher to catch the sides, but meh, i like the look of a lower bun.

Does he only use a hairtie to keep the bun while playing basketball? I would imagine it would come undone with only a hairtie.

Man, you have a fantastic mane!!!!!!! :guns: Yeah I know the feeling, its fair to say that awesome hair down contained and hidden in a bun does not make enough justice!

Thats why I dont care and just wear it down because I feel great like so!!!!

Btw. I analyzed the whole manbun thing. To keep it masculine IMO it needs to be more of a top knot and a beard helps tons.
Also most guys wear elastics but a messy bun and a neutral stick ( like ketylos) should give a similar result and is much gentler on hair.
Not that I think there is anything wrong with wearing it any other way. I just analyzed the trend a bit :)

Well, I still havent got success with a hair toy that makes my bun stay. Sticks dont hold and had the worst breakege trying to make it stay, same goes for forks! It usually need to be put in a pony fist, or I just do it with an elastic and stays well without redoing, why bother looking for a fancy toy that doesnt do its job when a cheapó cotton hair tie can!!

My hair is the king of slipperiness!!!

September 16th, 2015, 03:29 PM
Really? Wow! Because I had this friend and she was convinced HER hair was the king of slipperyness.
Maybe ypu should take it up with her?

Ok kidding. Srsly, when she tried a slightly tighter nautilus bun it turned out a stick holds fine.

I don't know about breakage, though. Have you had a chance to try quattros? They are thin but not pointy and very very smooth tops. Never ever snagged a hair on my head.

Still, I agree why bother if a cotton tie works for ya. It doesn't do it for me, cause it starts pulling after a few hours and sticks make more evenly distributed buns.

Naturally, most men with buns seem to be terminally trendy types who barely have enough hair to bun it, but the real beneficiaries of this trend are those of us guys who already have long hair. Gosh, it's only taken a couple of decades to go from ponytails to buns, after taking about as long to go from long hair to ponytails. Progress! LOL!

Oh my..... a bun being an extreme style??? :bull: well only extreme to scalp follicles if put in a tight and super tension manner with those crappy elastic like most "trendy" guys go for.

... and thats why I keep mine on the lowish- nape side, I just dont want to look another hipster clone and my scalp way is happier this way.

forgot to add, I always thought a bun could be properly done when it was at least shoulder lenght and pretty much one lenght otherwise it could be very dumb looking and this way circa 2007 way before hipster and shaved sides became all college rage!

Alun Basic Cinnamon is the way to start, then you can gradually get those awesome EdG suggestions!

Two guys from Canada on "The Amazing Race" seemed to create a stir amoungst us Canadians. They were two cool dudes who had long hair who almost always wore it in a bun . They were really laid back guys who didn't let anything frazzle them and they won. In interviews after the race they were told that they might be major contributors to starting a new hair trend for men and were asked how they felt about that . They both said that they had long hair and having it up to keep it out of the way just made sense to them and that they aren't doing it to make any kind of fashion statement.
Then they looked at each other and laughed .

The hairstyles really suited both of them and they represented canada well.

iYaap if you want a bun to hold, i suggest the Disk Bun, even though it needs a stick. At that length buns were hard for me too, and we're about the same thickness. If youre good with sticks, my go-to bun was the figure 8 where you peel open the top loop of a cinnabun and stick it down.

I also think that Ketylos (http://www.ketylo.com/servlet/storefront), Grahtoestudios' antler forks (https://www.etsy.com/listing/246557805/antler-hair-fork-hair-forks-antler?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=grahtoestudio&ref=sc_gallery_2&plkey=21241fbc85c52d33a229c75532e6c0965cde38b7:246 557805) and Quattro's sticks and forks (https://www.etsy.com/listing/245197607/quattro-hair-accessories-chrome-skull?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=quattro&ref=sr_gallery_3) would look awesome in men's updos. That's not to say that you can't wear pink, plastic Hello Kitty hair hair toys (http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Kitty-Large-Pink-Grosgrain/dp/B00GYQZJPK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444170034&sr=8-2&keywords=hello+kitty+hair+accessories) if you want to. I am wearing Eaduard wood sticks (https://www.etsy.com/shop/EaduardHairsticks) in my pic.

I think they are perfect for a man. One can always argue that man has been wearing sticks in his hair since ancient times (or at least since he saw woman wearing sticks in her hair). ;)

Yes, a stick bun can hold in a high wind, and through most normal activities.

Smoothed and shortened chopsticks work. My usual stick is a child length stainless steel stick.

Completely hearty thanks to Neoma and hennalonghair makes me happy.
And JadedByEntropy I am afraid this is a lot of information for me :) First of all I need a stick! And do they really hold in hard wind?

Yes Sir! Wind had not bothered my buns, nor playing sports. You can practice with a regular wood pencil until you get a hairstick, but watch the pointy end isn't too pointy! If you knitt, those needles make great hairsticks. :) utube has lots of tutorials- JJJLonghair makes good tutorials you don't have to pause to follow along with. :) She goes slow enough to understand whats happening. :) Best of luck with the new skills!

Unconventionally, my boyfriend has ALWAYS had longer hair than me. I keep chopping my hair even though I want to grow it out T_T He let me do a big chop on him when we first started dating (elbow to collarbone) to get rid of damage. It's about to hit his BSL length (if he wore a bra LOL)
I love when he does man-bun but he rarely does. :knuckle:

My fav is the guy with the crown braid, beard and cigarette hanging out of his mouth. It's jarring, but it makes me smile.

It seems to me that man buns tend to be messy. Braids, on the other hand, tend to require more precision. I'm looking forward to seeing this trend in action.

Actually, I wish I could grab some guys off the street and change their messy buns to braids. Can they arrest me for that? :silly:

Awesome! I'm a bit of a nerd and have always been into fantasy stuff like LOTR, GoT, etc. I like letting people braid my hair, but definitely need to learn to do it myself, plus if its a trend maybe I won't be self conscious about it.

Congrats on being able to make a stick bun.

Is your hair really slippery? (I suspect that it is, since it looks so shiny.) If so, adding a little aloe gel before braiding may give it a little grip and make braiding easier. :twocents:

With as thick as your hair is, and as blunt as your hemline is, I think you are doing great. I second spritzing something on your hair to make it grip a bit.. Even water will help.

Yeah, it's surprisingly difficult. Girls always make it look so easy but I remember it being tough just to get a good pony at first and then same for buns when I started doing that. Now it'll probably be the same trying braids.

It happens. Or at least, it has happened to me. Usually when my hair is all gross and tangled...and I have to decline, or "Okay, but I have to detangle first...". From time to time it comes up on the men's board and rarely is it objectionable. I'd say, Go for it!
