Hope this in the right place.
I was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. ultrasound showed nodules. Going for more test next week. Finally got my hair to shoulder length, but it has thinned so much. Has anyone been able to keep growing with this and the thinning? I really don't want to go short again Thanks for all the reply's.
I do eat healthy and use oils and goos shampoos and conditioners.

Yes. I have Graves Disease - it was diagnosed many years ago. After a few years of oral meds I had radioactive iodine treatment. Personally, I never noticed anything going on with my hair, as the constant doctor appointment ate up my money so fast I had no choice but to grow - who could afford a salon with paying for bloodwork every six weeks? My hair is now just barely at classic.

Once they get your meds figured out (which takes a while) you'll probably be good to go. :)

Hang in there. Your hair may be thin, but your choices now are long and thin or short and thin. May as well keep the length! If it looks too straggly, pull it back and wear big earrings.

Thank You embee.:)
I am having other symptoms as well. I was surprised at the results I have nodules as well. i will post how things are going when I get a chance. I know what you mean about dr appts and the blood work. I just got laid off the day before my results came in. So double wammy for me.
I was thinking the same as you long thin hair rather than short thin hair. I can keep it off my face so that is good.
As many have said on here. When stressed they want to cut their hair.

Sorry you lost your job, that's wretched, been there done that.

Since you're hyper, go look for other work, you'll have enough energy to do it. Everyone says hypo knocks people flat, they are tired and gain weight. What a poor way to feel! At least with hyper, one doesn't necessarily feel that awful. I loved being able to eat any and everything. I loved being thin. I loved having energy. But sometimes I felt rather frantic.

But I did not like the eye pain I had, and I hated the heart palpitations and the weak trembles which sometimes came.

I was hypo with nodules, they cleared up after a year of thyroid hormone. My mom has graves, and she had the radioactive treat, ent and now takes the same throid meds as me. My hair is hip length. Mom's is short, but she's never noticed any thinning.

Sorry to hear youre not well :( hyperthyroidism sucks :(

But yes it is possible to have long hair. I had Graves' disease for 6 years, took neo mercazole but my thyroid levels were all over the place, as I wasn't always strict with meds and my life was stressful. I also had eye trouble so instead of radioactive iodine I had a total thyroidectomy, now I'm on thyroxine and feel great. Things I learnt- be pro active, get second opinions from different doctors/specialists, avoid stress like the plague and be strict with taking meds at the same time each day etc. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction anyway, eating well counts for a LOT I believe :)

My hair was about waist/hip the whole time, and I did lose a lot of thickness. I just put it up and ignored it, and trimmed every so often. The most I ever cut was 4". But now, 2 years later, my hair is just past waist, and the thickness is moving down towards BSL. My hair is also slightly thicker than before.

Hope you will feel healthier soon :blossom:

My mom started taking iodine supplements for her hypothyroidism and she started feeling better, less cold etc and I noticed her hair is a bit thicker as well. Their just little drops she mixes with water

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your responses. I go back tomorrow and have the nuclear scan done. I took the pill this morning. Will find out the results the following Wednesday and hopefully what treatment will be given. Found out family has had thyroid problems and possibly cancer(grandmother). Cannot find out as my mom passed 6 years ago and my father has had strokes and doesn't remember family history.
I do know when I don't feel well I want to cut my hair.
Thank You all again:D

I am hypo not hyper thyroid, but my hair improved a lot after I started treating it and taking medication. So my guess is that yours should improve once your treatment starts and stuff :) Just remember to give it time, don't feel discouraged just because after a month your hair still doesn't show a ton of improvement - mine took years to grow out the weak parts so I could see healthier hair. :o I hope everything goes well for you!

Best wishes for a good scan.

Put away the scissors, there's no point in cutting off what you have. You're going to have some hair changes because of your hormones, just ride it out. As I suggested before, Big Earrings are your friends. :)

I have a friend who is moderately hypo thyroid, she eats nettles (steamed) to help boost everything- when she stops eating them it shows up in her bloodwork, so it really does seem to help- not as a total replacement for pills, but as a supplement.

Nettles are also supposed to be good to eat to keep your hair nice, so perhaps that's worth looking into?

My sister has always had very thick fast growing hair but over the last few years it began to thin and grow much slower. She became very ill and found out she had a thyroid problem. She's been on medication for a while now and her hair has regained it's usual growth rate and is growing back very thick and gorgeous, last time I saw her I was incredibly jealous! She also takes an epilepsy medication that gives her lovely curls but that's another topic.

I'm sure that once you are medicating your condition your hair will return to it's usual thickness and condition so hang in there and I hope all goes well for you.

Update.
Have to have my right thyroid take out. the nukkie scan showed it was hot and the nodule would probley still keep growing. He said the meds that would slow it down and have nasty side affects. With my ulcers it was not worth trying them. Schedule to have out is for December. Just want it done and over with because I am nervous.
Just want to thank everyone for encouraging me not to cut my hair, cause there are days when I am stressed that I want to cut, then I remember what everyone has said.

Well, surgery should take care of it. Keep those scissors hidden away. It's going to take a while before your insides level out again, the name of the game is Wait and Patience. :)

My boss had her thyroid removed years ago and has a tiny scar. Other than that she seems fine to me. Very energetic and active. Unfortunately she's a very long term bleach blonde so I can't say anything about the quality of her hair.... (well, I could, but she's sweet and I won't say it, that would be rude)
