Prickly Pear Seed Oil

I searched for this ingredient to see if any threads appeared but there were no results.

So I was wondering if anyone had tried this oil? It's richer in essential fatty acids than Argan Oil but also more expensive and very rare.

No worries, they do look a little improbable.

I had not heard of extracting oil from the seeds before. The jelly is tasty! And so are the young pad; nopalitos!

I only found out about it today. The impression I get is that it's not widely used, probably because of the extortionate price. Still, I'm curious to know how it compares to argan oil.

Is that something you have around your home? I live in WI so we just have pine trees and oaks, birches...My friend had a cactus in a pot once, we named it Spike (original, we know haha)

I've only used it once and in my opinion the results are similar to Argan Oil.
My ends feel softer and I used less (2 droplets) than I do when using Argan Oil (3-4 droplets) so I'm guessing it's more concentrated.
The texture was light and non greasy.

Fatty Acids In Prickly Pear Seed Oil:

Oleic Acid 20.6%
Linoleic Acid 60.5%
Stearic Acid 3.2%
Palmitic Acid 13.9%

Fatty Acids In Argan Oil:

Oleic Acid 43-49.1%
Linoleic Acid 29.3-36%
Stearic Acid 4.3-7.2%
Palmitic Acid 11.5-15%

I have a big spineless one in my backyard. I planted it 7 or 8 years ago. It has a lot of fruit every year.

In my opinion, yes it's better. l still think argan oil is fantastic though.
I washed my hair again today and used it on damp hair and the results have been nothing short of amazing. I know I sound like some sort of fake reviewer but I'm really not. It's that good!. I was reading somewhere that it's the most expensive oil in the world, not surprising when you consider how many seeds it takes to make a decent amount of this stuff. The process of extracting the oil is labour intensive and time consuming so it explains the cost.

No way I'm going to try to get seeds out, though. It's spineless, but the fruit are covered with these little fuzzy prickers called glochids, and they're a nightmare to get out of your hands. I try to handle the fruit as little as possible. I grow it for my tortoises anyway, but they don't care about the glochids.

Even if you did remove the seeds, you would still need a press to extract the oil and only 5% of oil is in each seed so you would need a lot!
