Not sure if this trick has been around all the time and i missed it, but i found it out myself and had to share!

Not only does it help prevent damage from making a ponytail with an elastic, it also displays your whole hairstick! (I'm looking at you, fellow timberstone turnings customers ;) )

Here's what it looks like:

The difference is the ponytail part. Since my english isn't advanced enough to write instructions, i made a crappy drawing to illustrate how you make the ponytail:

Brown part is the cross section of your ponytail, grey thing is an elastic and blue thing is the stick.
By making a ponytail like this, only bottom half of your hair will be secured with the elastic and the fragile canopy hair will be held by the smooth hairstick :) After you make the ponytail, you split it to two halves and wrap them around the base, like a regular chinese bun.

I used a huge hair band to make my bun, but you can use a thinner, better looking one.

I'm wearing this today and so far, it holds just as securely as a regular chinese bun :)

Hope this helps you guys!

I'm going to try this today. That's genius :) It looks really good too.

Interesting, I'll have to try this. My normal way of making a chinese bun is to start it with a braid just to avoid elastics but it's always fun to try new ways.

Whoop! Thanks for sharing. :)

Today is THE WASH DAY, so I don't have any sticks with me, but this will be happening over the weekend.

That's very clever, Dreams_in_Pink! Your diagrams were perfect! I think I might give this a try, even though I'm not much on hairsticks!

Dreams_in_Pink, that's GENIUS! :applause:

I just realized that purists don't even need to use an elastic, you can use any fabric tied in a loop (silk ribbon, paranda, etc.) for that base! The variations are pretty endless.

Your method is so cool-looking and so hair-friendly, Dreams_in_Pink! :D

Now I can use hair sticks without waiting for 'proper length'! This is a good thing, yes?

Am I the first to post a pic other than the OP? Clear elastic for the win!

I tried it but the stick wouldn't hold still or straight when I was winding the hair. Maybe I am not doing it right. Sigh.

Looks like a long-haired magic trick! :magic:

Must. Try!

Diva, do you have large clear elastics? I'm thinking the little ones I have would snap if stretched that far. And darn it, I'm nearly out of them and haven't seen any clear ones when I've been in likely stores. *grumble*

Small ones by goody. About the size of a dime before stretching. Remember the stick takes some of the circumference too.

this is awesome, way to go for coming up with it!
I tried it, it works super well (though I think I need some more inconspicuous looking elastics)

Tried this out with some Dutch braids!
Picture overload warning :p It's just a chopstick, so there really isn't a pretty stick to show off, so I used bright hairbands

This one is meant to look like a bow and arrow, but it doesn't look that way :(

i must be stupid or something, but i don't get how to do this....what does that mean: the cross section of your pony tail? can anyone explain to me in very simple steps? that would be nice...normally i would make a ponytail with an elastic, put the stick through it behind the elastic, and then start to twist the hair over and around and secure the ends with some pins...
