How does a drug test work when you have long hair? How far back do they go?

I was in a group of applicants for a job that requires hair follicle testing. I'm a male with short hair but we had two females with APL and BSL hair. They cut the hair right to the scalp. The people doing ours made it as unnoticeable as possible but did three different spots.

Like @DakarNick wrote the taking of the hair samples is not varied by hair length. They root to tip samples. So if you have long hair and a long growth cycle they can get 6 years of information from your hair sample. With a crewcut a whole lot less. The one time I was tested they only took two samples, both at the back behind my ears.
