View Full Version : Braids that eat hair.

Now I know this is probably exact opposite of what everyone is looking for, but for the days where you would like your long hair in a short braid, what do you braid it in? I have only found that the crochet braid does the job, but doesn't lay right, and doesn't stay exactly where you started it, if you know what I mean, so I'm looking for alternatives if anyone is willing to share any braiding ideas! Thank you!:D

I'm really sorry I can't contribute but I read "brats that eat hair" and I got so confused...

The more strands you use, the more hair it will eat and the shorter it will look. I know a girl who has TB length hair who works in a zoo and has her hair braided into a beaver tail type of thing once or twice a week that shortens everything up to about BSL.

I have found that to be not the case for my hair, a three strand took up more than a 5 strand for me, lol. However my calf length hair when put into a crochet braid turns into a BSL braid.

Drat! I'm sorry I couldn't be of assistance.

What about crown braids?

I'd go for multiple strand braids (5 or more)..but with your length, I doubt that would be doable (unless someone was helping keeping the strands separated).

How about using a different approach? One 3 strand braid wrapped around your head (that is, if you're looking for a style that keeps your hair up and out of the way).

Other than that, there's what I call the "doubling back" braid wherein you braid your plait loosely to the end, then take the end and "lace" it back up through the plait already made..something like shoelacing. When you hit the area near your nape, you can also wind the end of the braid around the "stem" several times, then pin in place with a couple of small crimped hairpins.

I've never done this myself as I hate anything heavy bouncing around my back.

What comes to mind is a cable braid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U3oHm8I-gs. I'm not sure how short you're wanting it to be though.

Alternatively, you could use magic like they do in the movie Tangled. I don't know how miles of hair turns into an ankle-length braid lol.

Or, braid with braids? Where you make three braids and braid those in a braid? Maybe that'll eat some proper length?

Braid-ception? That could work.

Braid each section and then re-braid into the main braid. I hope that made sense.

Yes, this is what I'm going for, a braid that makes your hair shorter so it doesn't get as caught while doing things, yet not in an updo, looking for something casual, thank you all!

I like making twin dutch braids, continuing a 3-strand braid all the way to the ends, then criss-crossing the braids to go back through the loops down the back of my head, so the center looks like this:

I like making 4 rope braids, rope braiding them together, then rope braiding the final 2 together. It gets my TBL hair to above BSL. Having shortish hair is so great sometimes! It's cool to not get it caught in the lift or chairs or anything!

Oh, that sounds beautiful, Imfbs! Any chance of a pic? Thanks!

I suppose you could keep doing that by braiding and re-braiding smaller and smaller. Of course the risk would be that when you released your hair monster the resulting braidwaves would prevent you getting through doorways! LOL :D

The cable braid is really good to eat up some length! :)

This is the cable braid that someone posted a Torrin Paige tutorial to.

This is what I do. :) These type of braids take my almost ankle length hair to knee. :D

I don't have a pic on my phone of my hair done like that, but here's one with 2 rope braids rope braided together - http://www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/category/hairstyles/braids/rope-braids/

Rope braiding the original rope braids adds a nice amount of texture and chews up length nicely! Next time I do this style (maybe tomorrow!) I'll try to remember to take a pic for you :)

Thank you for the link, Imfbs! The Chain Link technique is very pretty. Alas, all that twisting would drive my fingers crazy. Looking forward to you picture, when you have time! Thanks!

The centipede braid (I know, not a pretty name) ate up a decent amount of length and looked awesome, here's a tutorial: http://www.princesshairstyles.com/2014/09/centipede-braid-hairstyle-tutorial.html

And the three strand fishtail ate up a decent amount of hair and works better when it's not pulled super tight, unless you want to spiral, here's the tutorial: http://www.princesshairstyles.com/2014/04/3-strand-fishtail-braid-hairstyle.html

If you want an easy 11 strand braid (since there's many recommendations of 5 strand) here's one with no pins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHg3abiX-6E
Or you can make it a 13 by doing fourstrand braids instead of 3 (you'll understand after the video).

Cable braid looks like a lot of tension. That okay to use regularly?

There's something called a "spiral french braid" that looks really cool. You can find images of it on google. It looks really, really hard to do on oneself though.....

Thanks for all the suggestions! Now to figure out how I'm going to do that on myself! Lol.

5 strand, 9 strand, 11 strand braids. And I find that twisted fishtails eat up a lot of length.

Just an update, while the 11 strand does eat up a decent amount of hair, I found that doing a 15 strand braid (5 sections of hair braided in three strand braids, then those sections braided in a 5 strand) is much easier/less time consuming I think and certainly less frizzy in my case, I extremely dislike frays in my braid, so this seems to help a good bit unlike an eleven strand braid. :)

That sounds like a very impressive braid. Do you have any photos?
