View Full Version : Anyway to tell if it's a natural brush

Went to a car boot sale today and bought a brush, was only 50p, I asked what it was made of and was told that she believed it was all natural.
It's a solid wood base with the bristles set in the wood, the bristles are in tight clumps and are quite stiff. It's a big brush, oval in shape and a flat surface area for the bristles There is only a slight variation in colour of the bristles, mostly a darkish blonde colour but with very small amounts of black. I took a couple of shed bristles from it and burned them and it smelt of burnt hair so I'm guessing that's a good sign?
Is there anyway to be sure if this is an all natural brush?

Pull one bristle out and wave it over the flame of a lighter. If it burns, it's natural, if it melts, it's plastic :) Smell should give you a clue too.

That a great way of telling, cathair! Esperada, be sure and give that brush a very good soaking before putting it on your hair.
Does anyone out there know how to disinfect a pure bbb?

It burned so guessing natural then :)
I's a real heavy thing and a few of the clumps look slightly worse for wear but not too bad.
Not planning on using it until it's disinfected, if anyone knows how?

That's good news, that's a great carboot find :)
I don't know how to disinfect them, I too would be interested to know. I think you can wash them with ordinary shampoo like you would your hair, but I am unsure how much that would disinfect it. I know you can busy UV light things to kill germs on toothbrush heads, but I am sure they would be too small for a BBB.

Ladies, I just started a How do You Disinfect a pure bbb thread. Perhaps someone will tell us. I'm veery curious because using someone else's brush, even if cleaned, is just 20 kinds of yuck for me. YMMV, of course!

Good idea Madora! I really hope you get some responses :)
I'm in two minds about it myself. I had an antique Victorian silver coloured BBB with a matching mirror from a car boot sale, when I was very small. I used that and it never did me any harm. I've also borrowed other people's brushes in the past, which isn't much different to a second hand brush. But on the flip side, when my brother had long hair, he got a nasty scalp infection and had to have half his hair shaved off. So I wouldn't have wanted to share a brush with him! A second hand brush is a bit of an unknown.
