I have never made my own hairsticks. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-green-paua-shell-hair-stick-hairstick-pins-findings-beadable-/161187129316?pt=Fashion_Jewelry&hash=item25878067e4 I found this lovely pair of shell ones online (such pretty colours) but the holes are sort of drilled into the length of the sticks for adding beads to. I suspect they are meant to be for hanging danglies but I'm not too keen on them as I am clumsy and always end up in a weird hooked-to-myself-and-clothes-and other-household-objects yoga pose. How would you attach beads to these and what style or colour of beads would you use?

You might get more answers in the self made hairtoy thread. Lots of artistic peeps hang out in there :)

Those are beautiful. If you don't want beads, don't attach beads! I agree that topped sticks can be tangly, and dangly stuff even tanglier. I think the way those are drilled, if you don't want dangles, you don't bead them, at all. Unless you want to try drilling down straight from the end/tip and using a headpin or a hat pin to put beads on the end...

Or you could just thread some wire with beads on it through the hole that is there, and wrap it up around the top, so it's just decorated a little bit.

Just looked at the listing and they are 7" long, which is pretty good size. I wouldn't put a topper on them, it might just get crazy long if you do!

SkyChild, I don't know enough to answer your questions, but I just wanted to say: those hair-sticks are GORGEOUS! What a great find! :D
I second/third the Self-made Hair-toy Thread recommendation for this: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131
The ladies there are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about stuff like that! :)

They're pretty, huh? I thought about it when I saw a wooden hair fork with a tiny bit of shell inlay and went "I wonder what happens if I google shell hair toys"
Et voila!
I found some great beads for the top too - mini ammonite fossils! And some gorgeous glass beads here - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/111126843/ocean-teal-lampwork-beads-pair-handmade?ref=sr_gallery_27&ga_search_query=pair+of+glass+beads&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery

I would take some fine copper wire and sew those glass beads to the tops of the sticks. make sure it's long enough for multiple passes through both sets of holes (leave a tail on one end). Then twist your ends together tightly, trim them so they're even, and hide them (thread them back through the bead if it's at all possible.)

I wanted to thank the op of this thread. You inspired my brother to buy a pair of hair sticks for his church friend. I know this was off topic did they arrive on time and good shape?

Cool! Glad to have inspired :)
I haven't ordered them yet - we're going through a poor patch so can't justify hairtoys. Once we've paid off our credit card they'll be top of my list!

As promised my brother got his today. They're one day late arriving in the mail. They're beautiful just like the picture.
