View Full Version : Garnier Hair Dye....

Wow. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a hair dye.

Yes, I know their dyes are bad and I shouldn't color my hair if I want to grow long, but I want to enjoy coloring my hair while I can.

I wanted burgundy purple hair, so I went with Garnier's "Dark Intense Burgundy" which is supposed to even color black hair a lovely eggplant color.

I put it in my hair, starting on my ends which are black and worked my way to my roots. Left it in for 30 minutes (which is recommended for coarse hair) and rinsed it out.

Surprise, my ends didn't look ANY different and my lighter roots (about 3-4 inches) were just BARELY tinted a red purple. They still actually looked grown, just had a tint in the light.

So, I did a stupid thing and dyed my hair again. This time I left it in for 45 minutes and....? My hair still looks exactly the same.

My hair didn't take to this dye at all! It's so strange since, normally, I don't have this problem. My hair usually takes to dye fairly well.

I just have to laugh because it says right on the box "Transform even the darkest brunettes into ultra vibrant burgundy tones in one simple step!" Talk about super disappointing.

Anyone else have experience with Garnier hair dyes?

Dye over dye, if it's that dark to begin with, is not going to do much - that's a given. Sorry you had to find that out the hard way. :flower:

I knew the dye over dye thing, I just thought because this was formulated to work with dark hair, it'd work with mine. I don't remember ever having a problem with that when I dyed my hair when I was younger. :/

pastina, don't worry. I have plenty of gelatin to do protein treatments. I plan on leaving coconut oil in it for a week straight.

I've used garnier dyes and have never had any problems with them when my hair was dark brown, but they don't work on black or very nearly black hair. You may be able to see a slight hint of colour in bright sunlight though.

I've used Garnier hair dyes and they have also never worked for me. My hair colour is naturally very dark brown, so as Esperada says, they wouldn't work. As you can see from my avatar my hair is bleached like mad - I've tried Garnier over bleached hair too, and it barely altered the shade (I tried mid-brown over bleach; it came out very light brown and washed out in a couple of weeks even though it was supposed to be permanent). I also find that Garnier never include enough mixture for hair that's longer than shoulder length. I tried dyeing hair just above armpit length (several years back) and I ran out of mixture!

I was talking to a friend the other day and she said Garnier dye didn't work for her either.

Also, I've since learned that "geared towards dark hair" means natural colored, and not dyed. But still...My roots aren't really all that dark and they still didn't have much color.

Sigh...But I've learned my lesson. I'm doing a semi in a darkish brown shade tomorrow and not trying permanent colors again.

Sorry you experienced that. I know how that is. I have had the same experience but not with that dye. "For dark hair" means virgin dark hair. Also, if you have really healthy, thick, coarse hair, the dye may not work as effectively as it would on finer, lighter hair. Also, you need to apply the dye on the ends and middle first then the 1/2-1 inch closest to your scalp last since the heat from your scalp makes the dye process faster even if you have all virgin hair. I had so many layers of dark demi and permanent dye on my hair that my first bleach bath left on for 30 minutes looked like it did nothing to my hair lol. I had to do 3 sessions of that spaced out and then had to resort to using straight bleach on my hair with foils. Even if you are maintaining medium brown hair, you are not supposed to run the dye all the way through the ends every time. The ends become porous and ends up "grabbing the color" and looking dark and dull compared to the fresher healthier hair on top of your head. I've been dying my hair since middle school and unfortunately, I learned all of this the hard way. I've been through just about every dye nightmare short of a chemical haircut done on myself by myself and by salon professionals.
