How can I Safely Straighten my Hair?

I need to straighten my hair for a dance team competition, and it will need to stay straight overnight. I have 4 inch thick, wavy hair. I've resisted using heat on my hair for a year now but the straight hair is necessary. Is there a way to straighten it without heat or prevent damage? Any advice is appreciated.
