View Full Version : Why is purple / silver shampoo bad for your hair?? (and is it?)

Calling all blondies / ingredients boffins!

I've recently gone blonde (high lift), and in a bid to keep the brassies away, I have been trying out various purple shampoos. All of them have been sulfate-free - sulfates make me itch like crazy. I notice that my hair is always dry after a purple shampoo - and I'm wondering why this is? If all it contains is deposit only colour - why does it appear to be so drying? Is there anything else really damaging in these shampoos? I love the results of Tigi Catwalk Fashionista - I went from Colonel Mustard to Jessica Simpson in one go (hair-colour wise anyway!) but alas one wash left it quite dry. It is worth mentioning that my hair is fine, and although it's in good condition (thanks coconut oil!) it has always damaged really easily.

Are there any really nasty ingredients in the (large) ingredients list below??

Water (Aqua/EAU), Sodium Cocoyl Iesthionate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Distearate, Glycerin, Fragrance (Parfum), Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Sodium Isethionate, Dimethiconol, Polyquaternium-10, PPG-9, Laureth-4, Mica, Disodium EDTA, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Amodimethicone, Triethanolamine, Sodium Benzoate, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, PEG-45M, Magnesium Nitrate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Sodium Acetate, Trideceth-12, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cyclopentasiloxane, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Silica, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Non-Fat Dry Milk, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Trideceth-9, Hydrolysed Pearl, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Xanthan Gum, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Limonene, Linalool, Ext Violet 2 (CI60730), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891)

I can't find much about damaging effects on the web either. All suggestions / gentle purple shampoo recommendations welcome!
