Hey guys! So recently I've fallen in LOVE with egg washes. It leave my hair PERFECT, soft, shiny and it behaves so well. Best off all, it makes my hair cleaner for longer. It's awesome! I use it every other wash. The other washes are done with a sulfate and cone free shampoo and condish. I was hoping you guys would have any ideas for getting rid of/masking the egg smell it sometimes leaves in my hair. Today I tried a few drops of peppermint and rosemary oils and it made is smell SOO nice and the tingle on my scalp was to die for, but after it dried, my mom sniffed my hair and said it smelled like minty farts...Even the ends, where I used conditioner. Any other ideas I could try?? I really don't want to give these up, but i don't really like my hair stinking...even if I can't tell.

I wonder if a vinegar and water rinse would help.

I know that Empress Sissi used egg and brandy washes for her hair? I wonder if the brandy does something for the egg smell?

Oh, good idea! I'll give that a try the next time I do an egg wash!

Hmm...Maybe. I'm wondering if the alcohol would be damaging. I know I avoid it in shampoos and conditioners, but I'm not sure if it's considered the same thing. Probably not. If the vinegar doesn't work maybe I'll give this a go but I'm not sure I want it in the house since my mom is a recovering alcoholic. I don't want to make it harder on her.

Have you tried some of the suggestions in the threads on egg washing here? I think this one (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=40386) is the longest/most active.

How about making a spray with water and some drops of EO and spray it on your hair when it's dry? You could add some conditioner as well to make it a leave-in conditioner (for example, Petal Fresh has a cone-free conditioner which smells really minty). I second Nevada Rose's idea as well.

"Minty farts!!" LOL! Recently I have been doing egg yolk and coconut oil prewash treatments and even though I shampoo this out and follow up with two conditioners afterwards, my hair has a strong lingering scent of egg yolk days after until my next wash. I have tried a vinegar rinse, but for me even that didn't help. For some reason vinegar rinses linger in my hair too. It's worse, because I can smell the egg yolk and I can smell the vinegar. I must smell like salad dressing? The egg yolk treatment really strengthens my chemically treated hair. It looks full, soft, and shiny too... but that egg yolk smell makes me want to throw up whenever it's down.

seconding the vinegar rinse option :D also, mix your eggs with lemon juice or maybe even some vinegar. I love egg washes but they are expensive in the long run :(

This morning I had my mom smell my hair, just to see if the smell dissipated over night and she started laughing mid sniff. I asked her what was so funny...turns out she was just giving me crap, my hair smells like peppermint and nothing else. Thanks for all the tips and ideas but I guess I don't need them. Mothers. Whatcha gunna do?

Awesome! I'm so glad that the egg-wash doesn't smell and your mom was just pulling your leg, he-he! :D
On a more general note, I use diluted white vinegar, let it sit in hair, then add conditioner, let it sit in hair, then wash it off. This method is great at getting all smells out.

Nadine <3, can you share your egg-wash routine? It sounds like you are having amazing results, so I'm really curious about how you do it. :)

Of course! It's nothing to fancy, but works really well. I have a small measuring cup I use to mix it up. I eye ball most of it too, nothing is measured but the essential oils. First I eye ball some water into my cup. Not a ton, just a bit. I stick it in the microwave to warm it up, takes about 30 seconds. Then I separate an egg and use the whites as a facemask and dump whatever is left into my breakfast since I prepare my shampoo at the same time I'm cooking breakfast. Might was well do it while I have the eggs out lol Then I mix the yolk into my warm water, add a squirt of raw honey, stir some more. Then I just add my essential oils and dump it into an old serum bottle with a squeeze top on it for super easy application. Once in the shower, I get my head wet and squirt enough to saturate my scalp nicely and give it a bit of a massage. Usually I have enough mixture to do the three times. You don't have to repeat but I feel like it gets it nice and clean, and I don't want to waste mixture. Plus if I used peppermint I can't ever get enough of the tingle! After my last wash I rinse like a maniac and cover the ends in conditioner, detangle, rinse, done. I use my usual leave in of olive and coconut. It leaves my hair so clean, shiny and bouncy! I can stretch longer now that I've started egg washes. My scalp LOVES them just as much as my hair does, and it was always hard for me to find something my whole head liked.

I agree that eggs are the best shampoo ever! I do em every other Wednesday. If you mix with yogurt and honey you'll never smell any egg.

I quit egg washes after I almost threw up the last time. After doing it my hair looked great and I didn't notice the smell at first. Then I wenz on a train and it was really warm inside and... oh god, the smell has suddenly become horrible. I was trying not to puke the entire 2 hours while I was on the train and I was so afraid everybody else could smell it as well.

I can't imagine after thorough rinsing that there could still be any smell. Peppermint oil and lemon juice, honey, and aloe should already knock the egg smell out and all are great in hair. Oh and apply dry so it doesn't drip down all over you, that's my tip since I prefer an egg mixture to stay in my hair and not run down my body at all. My hair drinks it up (I whip up just enough to saturate my dry hair) & I let it sit a couple minutes and then rinse very thoroughly.

So your hair didn't smell after all! :D I just noticed that as I was going to reply. I used egg in my hair earlier this week, and mixed with olive oil and honey as a leave in treatment. I never noticed an egg smell either. I found the olive oil and honey treatment on pinterest.com and just decided to add an egg because I have heard about the benefits. I don't know which part did the most for my hair, but I also noticed my hair stayed cleaner for longer too. It also felt stronger and healthier. So if you want to use egg as a leave in treatment...try the olive oil and honey mix worked great for me. I left in my hair about 30 minutes wrapped in a towel. Then washed like I normally do with cool water and rinsed with ACV.

I need to check out the egg washing thread! I've never used an egg wash before, but I can understand by stachelbeere's it could get expensive...depending on how often you had to wash the hair. A must try since I liked the leave in treatment so much! :)

I wash with eggs every two weeks, I have heard more often can be overkill.

I can't wait to try an egg wash! If it can really get an oil treatment out of hair...low poo doesn't do it for me, unless I am EXTREMELY light-handed with the oil. Like how you would be if you were just using it as a leave in. I hope it works for me...fingers crossed! I'm going to try it tomorrow morning, after a dc treatment tonight. Good thing I have tomorrow off lol!!
