View Full Version : The Ridiculous Hairstyles Thread!

So there seems to be threads for lovely length and beautiful buns and brilliant braids - but as far as I know there is no space for the 'sillier hairstyles'. So here it is, have you ever worn a 'weird' or 'extravagant' hairstyle, whether it be for 5 minutes or as an afternoon experiment and failed?

I shall attempt to dig up photos soon, but I put my hair into a palm-tree about half a year ago (basically, a pony tail made out of many hair bands, making the pony tail stand vertically off your head like a palmtree).
Very ridiculous, can be painful if you move - it lasted 5 minutes (so I could take photos), before I took it down.

I also attempted "DreamCatcher Hair" (from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt2myuvoSdw ) a couple of months ago, however, I soon discovered this girl has a lot less hair than I do, as I was infinitely sectioning my hair and ended up with several layers of "netted hair". Used up lots of pony-ties (all of them in fact), and I probably looked like I was sporting beaded dreads with all the colours in my hair. :) Wore it for the evening, my boyfriend apparently quite liked it. Not a quick style to do though :p

So yeah... what weird/ridiculous/silly hairstyles have you attempted? :)

How did you even get it like that? I can't even imagine how that would happen, at least given my own understanding of how the nautilis bun works . . .

Timea
August 21st, 2014, 09:03 AM
Well, it's clear that I did something wrong. But I started by sectioning it because my hair is too thick to do a nautilus all in one go, so just using the top third of my hair, I remembered you were supposed to wrap it around your fingers and then twist it and then wrap around the twisted thing, so I did that. And then I took the next third of my hair, from ear to ear upwards, and divided that in half, and rapped one side around and then the other side around. and then the underlayer, the bottom third of my hair which i used to shave, they weren't long enough to reach so i just pinned those up with bobby pins. And then I put the crochet hook in it.

If I only there was a way to bring the youtube video to the only mirror in the flat so that i could watch the youtube video while fixing my hair!

Hahahahaha - that state of youth today eh? ;-) *rolls eyes* But seriously, that girls poor hair - If I did that to mine I wouldn't have any!

Seeshami - that is one extreme bun!!!

Whoo, fantastic contributions!! :D
Seeshami, I love that skirt bun! I won't lie, but I think you could probably pull that out outdoors and all. :p
Timea - I have probably had many attempted updos look like that, though I've never gotten a picture.
Madora - teehee! My mother would call me a sheepdog when I was younger and had a long fringe that always drooped in my eye covering my face.
TrapperCreekD - I have tried hard to think of something ridiculous about it - it looks perhaps like a Broccoli? :p Nah but seriously, it looks good (not that the previous don't, I just thought it was funny to see hairstyles out of the norm, or those that kind of went wrong).
fidrildi - Haha! I remember when I was a younger teen I thought emo and scene hair looked really cool and wanted to imitate the style - but when I saw the amount of backcombing and dye and flat ironing they did to their hair (and how brittle and matt it looked too!!), it kind of put me off it. However, has brought to my memory (beware, large photos) - the punk hairstyle!!
When I celebrated my 15th birthday (still 14), my best friend took me to a fancy hairdressers as a present, and we both got the exact same haircut, really short with layers at the back, and we got the stylists to use hard gel to get spikes in our hair. I actually really loved this haircut and hairstyle, out of all short hair styles I've had it was definitely the best, and it grew out really well too (so there was no need to go back to the hairdresser to get things fixed) - although I only managed to replicate those spikes one more time before my hair was too heavy to hold up. :p

...if I ever get short hair again (I used to love short hair because it was quite manageable for my thick hair, though I'm well fixed on keeping my long hair growing now :) ), I'd definitely go for this cut again...

I don't understand bigger buns are better mentality. I think total in my life I have worn a skirt bun for ten minutes and while I am weird enough to get away with it outside the comfort of my home I would hate to raise the big buns bar higher in my community.

I think you told me that when I did it. and it still makes me go awwww it's really not that beautiful but okay! I also think some people can't process the whole wait a minute did she just put a SKIRT in there?

I keep looking and looking at that photo, Madora. If I go by the shape of your head I would say that you are most likely looking at the camera with your right eye. But then again, I also see the corner of your left eye despite the fact that the shape of your head suggests that you are looking at the camera with your right eye. But what if the photographer has arranged your hair in a way that confuses you even more, and makes you wonder is it her right eye or is it the left? That photo keeps playing games with my mind, a kind of Mona Lisa mystery, is she smiling or is she not smiling. I wonder if the photographer was aware of the effect of the one eye composition. I'm glad you were able to get the photo shoot gratis. ( I got a bit confused for a second when I saw the "gratis" word in the post :) ) I completely forgot to compliment you on your hair.

Well, I was trying to cooperate with Mr. F's wishes regarding what he was trying to do with my hair. This photography session came out of the blue..sorta. Mr. F had seen some of my pics on the old Frank Plonnisen site, The Long Hair Site, and wanted to photograph it. By that time I didn't have my long hair anymore and was sure he wouldn't be interested. But he insisted..and so with a bit of wariness, I visited his studio. He was very pleasant and showed me his portfolio of other long haired ladies (including our own Heidi W), and it was a very pleasant session.

That was an awesome video! Love the costume, the dancing, & that ombre hair! :crush:

Down IS pretty fun, & I wear it down when not dancing, and wouldn't mind it down when soloing. It'd certainly cut my prep time in half! But with ATS being group improv, followers need to see every bit of body language information they can glean from the leader while dancing behind her, without having to stare lasers into the back of the leader's head. So hair goes up most of the time, and open-backed cholis let us pick up on muscle movements, too. (Totally a subconcious level thing, but really cool & effective! You just know what the leader is about to do. It's so neat!) There've been times a leader might have her hair down, or be wearing fake dreads down her back, or a veil, and it gets a lot harder to achieve that looks-choreographed-but-isn't look.

Aesthetically, I'm sure there are ATSers that'll say "More is More!" in ATS costuming, and you can shove soooo many goodies into an updo! But I've never been told by my troupe leader to tone it down.... [*cough* lies *cough cough*]

Hmm.... I'm going to have to see if we have a bellydancing thread on here somewhere. I want to see more videos & pictures & such! (Oh boy, I'm on a post-hafla high!)
