View Full Version : Dark hair ppl and henna

March 20th, 2008, 12:25 AM
I have very dark, almost black, hair, and i thought of using henna for conditioning purposes, but i have no idea what result would it be considering color on my hair.

Those who have natural dark hair and then hennad it, please post your pictures of before and after and your mixes here in this thread.

I don't have dark hair, but if your hair is close to black I imagine it will give your hair a reddish hue, especially in the sun, but it won't make it bright red. Remember, it is permanent!

I'm sure someone will come along soon who has henna'd over similar hair to yours.

Good luck!

My hair is very dark brown, with some gray coming in at the temples. Here's some of my photos:

I use Dark Brown Rainbow Henna (the BAQ henna is too fine and my husband has an allergic reaction to it). I just mix with water and a little vinegar as on the directions.

I use baq henna..

this is from my old signature pic from before I started hennaing again:

And here is a closeup post henna.. I too have greys, though they weren't very visible in that one picture..

remember the bright hairs are whites that have turned red, and this particular picture is only day 2 post oxidation, so they do get a bit darker then they appear in this image. for me they become red highlights.. and overall my hair has a red hint in the sun, but otherwise its the closest to natural color its been since I stopped hennaing about 15 years ago.

I have very dark hair, almost black. I use a mixture of henna and indigo because I don't want my grey to turn bright red! It gives my hair a "warm" tone with red/auburn highlights in the sun. The color really hasn't changed though.

I henna my hair. I think it gives it a reddish hue, but most people say that it still looks black to them. :) Check my profile pic for a bigger image.

Morticia, do you use just henna or indigo too. I thought of putting some amla and cassia in the mix, for better conditioning purposes. I too have a few silver hairs, well too much for my age, but i like them! I would like them red too :D Will they go back to silver as time passes if i hennaed my hair? My hair is terrible weak and thin

Lucy- I have been leaning towards some Cassia playing in between, but for me, just henna gives me a nice dark burgundy on my greys and it doesn't fade.. but it does take an extended henna session to get that. Mom thinks its too orange on her whites.. it isn't for me.. but then again she has more of them than I do. the biggest issue I have is the 3 week one with roots.. I can stretch it to 4, but they are visible to me after 3, and to others noticeably after 4. I do full head henna's each time, and have gotten a LOT of compliments on the color.. and I have seen the added strength and thickness to the individual hair strands.

I do use 8 hour henna sessions, but the lack of depth of color after 5 hours was with acid, and now I do it without it, so it might not be the issue.

My mom is thinking about using henna on her dark brown, almost black hair, and she's wondering what sort of colour she'll end up with, or whether the henna will show up at all. So do any of you lovely dark haired henna users have any pictures to share? I looked on the Henna For Hair site, but I couldn't find many pics of naturally dark hair that had been dyed.

You could also just describe the colour, or the good things that henna has done for your hair. Thanks in advance, she'll appreciate your answers. :)

I use henna on VERY dark hair with some whites.. my whites become red highlights, my darks get sunred- they glow red in the right light, thats it.. and otherwise its not visible...

it does condition, it has strengthened and slightly thickened my hair and I've hardly noticed any split ends since I started hennaing.. just a few recently and went back to Henna last July... haven't had a cut in 12 months... my profile pic shows some of the sun/flash red...

I have been wondering the same thing.I have black hair and was dying to henna my hair for conditioning.Red highlights sounds kind of nice.

My hair is dark brown with no gray and I henna- in the beginning it was just barely noticable red glow in the sun/camera flash but since I've had at least 10+ full applications and several glossing in between now it's very noticable. Indoors my hair is still dark. Depending on how many full applications she does vs. root only applications the glow can vary from very subtle to very noticable. A photo showing the henna in the flash is in my album.

I don't have any pictures on this computer sorry. I have dark brown hair with a few greya. The greys are a beautiful copper and my brown looks....brown inside. In certain light inside it has red highlights. Outside in the sun it can look red or burgandy I love the color (I wish I could get it redder :( ) I have been told by some people it looks almost purple I am assuming its a deep burgandy? This suits me fine and I've only gotten complements.

My hair is shineier, thicker and stronger then ever. I have not cut in at least a year, maybe more and I have no splits.

Hi, I have dark hair made darker by henna. It takes the grays and turns them a brighter red but since I have been doing it for a year now it all blends. The color changes in the outdoor light vs. the indoor light. My siggy shows indoor light. My advice is for your mom to learn everything before jumping in since it is pretty impossible to undo.

Henna has been generally much better for my hair than chemical dyes. I have a sensitivity to the chemicals and it burns my scalp and I lose a lot of hairs. But henna is fine for me, and leaves my hair shiny and healthy. Here's some photos!

Here's my dark brown with gray hair before:

Here's with straight BAQ henna (the grays turn orange-red) - which I didn't like:

Here's what I use now, Rainbow Dark brown henna:
This produces a much more natural brown on my grays.

P.S. If you have any grays and you don't want them to be orange-red, you won't want to use straight henna. You can add indigo & amla for a chocolate brown or use one of the pre-mixed henna boxes like Rainbow.

Hope that helps!

btw- 8 hour application allow my greys to be more of a burgundy red then Mellie's but every application takes the 8 hours..

April 9th, 2008, 10:50 AM
Wow, 8 hrs! Khyricat, you have way more patience than I do! :-) I usually just do an hour and a half!

April 9th, 2008, 11:48 AM
heh- I put it in in the morning, wrap it up, put on a shower cap and then put on my henna hat, and go about my day.. housecleaning chores, even grocery shopping.. and then rinse it out before dinner.. I always do this on my day off!

Hi Wanderer - I've recently hennaed by hair for the first time and I have dark hair although it's not almost black. My sig pic at the bottom is after 3 hours of henna and it still looks brown and the pics below are the same but with a flash. You can see the difference, but it's only subtle. My hair looks more red in the sunlight though. Hope this helps!

Hi, just posted this on a similar thread - I've recently hennaed my hair for the first time and left it on for three hours (250g). Don't have before pics, but my hair looked the same as it does in my sig pic, even though this was taken after the henna. The difference is only noticeable close up and in brighter light. The pics below were taken with a flash and the red shows up even more in the sunlight. Hope this helps!
ps. the conditioning is amazing!

Thanks everyone! I'll show her this thread along with the info I've found on other sites. :)

Sorry 'bout that - thought I posted on two different threads! Obviously not!!

Keep in mind that henna is traditionally used in countries were many of the women have dark hair anyway. So, there's not much you could do to really ruin your color, and if you don't like the color, you can do it again, or add indigo. I really like henna on darker hair. :)

I do 8 hours too. I put it on before bed go to sleep and wash it out when I wake up. This way I don't feel like I have to give up any time to henna. On occasion when I know I don't have any plans to go out and want to stay in all day I will do it in the morning and wash it out in the evening.

heh- with my funky henna hat, I have even gone to a nice restaurant for lunch with friends.. I figure it is so covering of my head that people will have no clue what is going on underneath- I just leave it on...
