Accent Braids

Last Saturday I braided 7 small braids in the back bottom portion of my hair. I've been having fun using them in different hairstyles this week. They make regular hairstyles look fancy or complicated. :)

Today's hairstyle is Lunnafindel's Rapunzel Braid (top right) Click on the picture for more accent braid photos.

Amazing! Those hairstyles all look great, and the Rapunzel braid with 7 accents is so cool! I should try that some time...when I work up the courage to do 7 accent braids. kudos to you for patience ;)

Meteor..After I did the center dutch braid to the nape, I clipped it off with a soft elastic, then divided the hair in about 9 sections, which were braided.
I then removed the elastic, lined up the braids in my hand so they more or less sat next to each other (i.e. flat), then gently twisted all nine (just barely) and wound the twisted 9 around the center French Dutch braid. This was my first attempt and I was pretty happy the way it turned out.

For both I braided the accent braids together into a herringbone braid. For the 3rd photo I just braided my hair into a 4strand braid with the accent braid as one of the strands.
For the 5th I made a low ponytail and wrapped the accent braid around it twice and pinned.

Since accent braids take quite a while to do on long hair, I'd love to keep them in... for like a week ... But is it safe for hair to keep such micro-braids or can it cause breakage?

I tried the Rapunzel braid too, but did a 5 strand braid of the main braids, down into a 3 strand when my accent braids got too short, and all my main braids are Dutch because I like those better. Here's my first attempt, it's gross looking on the top:

I dont even dare to look at the tutorial, for the life of me I cannot do a french braid or a dutch one or any except the plain English one, and that one I am always getting one or two of the three strands to be shorter than another....

Just wanted to share that I haven't had much breakage with accent braids, but using a tangle teezer to comb them out makes it way easier to undo them. Just start at the bottom and take off one or two crossings at a time and it works wonderfully!

meteor,if are careful while braiding them and not let any hair that's not supposed to be in the braid in,it doesn't cause breakage.Errr this might sound confusing,so basically if they tug at your roots when you move them,they might cause breakage.

I put four tiny accent braids at my part and then proceeded with my typical face framing braid. I like it! I attempted a crown braid and my husband said I looked like I needed to put on my Halloween costume :-( so that was a fail but this worked out well...

I so envy everyone's awesome braiding skills here! :D

English braid is all I can do :( ... so accent braids are a life-saver for creating some variety!

I've tried these before and even the smallest ponytail holders I could find (little clear ones) were too big for the tiny little end of my braids and would slip off. Leaving them loose they would start to unravel some though.

I just ordered tiny clear bands, like the size of loom bands, but are not looms. I fully intend to tie the braids off. Sure this will not be totally damage free, but my hair can handle it and I do want to have a little bit of fun. when tied off they can last a while in my hair. :)

I tie them with string, then once all the accent braids are braided into larger braids, I remove the strings and tie the end of the big braid.

Since my hair is rather long, the way I hold an accent braid is by braiding it as far down as I can (or care or have the time to). If I only braid for a little bit and then leave it loose, it unravels faster.
I refuse to use any holders for accent braids, because they aren't worth the damage IMHO. If I want to add interest to my accent braids, I use silk ribbons and they might help hold the braids better.
I think the LHC-approved way of using those tiny clear silicone holders is to cut them when you need to remove them... personally, I'd rather avoid them altogether.

lauren_alia, I used to use BLAX black plastic no slip elastics on my accent braids (a long time ago). I don't know whether or not they're made any longer. I did break down and buy a package of pastel clear tiny elastics made by Goody. The elastics aren't as horrid as one might think, so long as you take them off the same way you put them on. Just pulling them off isn't hair friendly.

So question, any curlies/super wavies have luck with accent braids? I love them but any time I make them since my hair has so much texture you bearly can see the braids stand out. Over straight hair they show so beautifuly...

My hair is 2b ( was told maybe 2c even ),and I have no problem with making my accent braids seen. The only thing is, that for wavy/curly person need to make more of the braids and then position them while making the hairstyle. Can be pain at first, but you will find the best way for them to work...

Yeah many of them. At least 7 or more, as 1-2 will just hide in our hair and will never be seen. Or if they are 1-2 braids then better to make them wider size. And best to all of them make at same place, like for example near the neckline, then it is easier to keep them together.
