View Full Version : Your Hair, Completely Different -- Photos!

I've seen some pretty amazing shifts in hair colors and lengths and textures, on this forum -- from pixies to classic length, purple to blonde to black, straight to braid waves to perms -- and sometimes all of those from the same person! And then I ran across an old photo of myself, with a near-platinum bob that I'd half-forgotten… Which made me think it would be fun to see people post two pictures of their hair, using the most dramatically different photos they could find.

So here are mine:

Several years ago, the blonde bob (talk about high maintenance hair! I think I'd come straight from the hairdressers when this was taken, because I don't remember it ever looking so tidy again. And moths ate that sweater. Ah, the passage of time.).

Today, as a henna head -- wearing some fake braids custom-matched from Puppycatmeow (https://www.etsy.com/shop/Puppycatmeow). I blame Nightshade for the purchase. She'd posted a photo of some pieces from Puppycatmeow and I was overcome with the need to have one. Why fish around in my own meager mane for hair for braids, when I can just pull them out of a drawer?

My hair fantasy..glorious auburn hair. My mom had this color and her mother had red gold hair. I wound up with blah brown (pic on right). This pic is from early 70s:

How I envy all you naturally red/auburned hair folks!!!

I'm sorry, but all I read was "fake braids, go buy, Marjo". Maybe I can find some pics of my dye disaster black bob (the bob was fab, the black .... wasn't light golden brown like promised on the box) and if i do I shall post!

This is fun. :)

You make me want to go henna red..... :crush: I am kinda boring. Basically more or less same color hair with more or less golden stripes. I did use henna once as a teenager hmm.... Anyway hair always long, shortest about armpit at the front and at the back at bra strap length. Cool to see the more dramatic changes ;)

Love that braid, I would love one, but unfortunately I have no idea what colour my hair is and which one I would need to order

Spidermom -- oh my gosh, got my first laugh of the day with that 70s pic. So completely period-appropriate, including the patchwork-pattern dress. You were a stylin' babe, and you knew it. :)

Re: the braids. Puppycatmeow sends little packs of free hair samples, that you use to match your hair. She'll also custom-mix the hair. I tore apart a couple of the samples and mixed them to get the right color, then told her what percentage of each color to use.

Madora, it's funny, but your natural color is just about identical to mine (I do get gold highlights in the sun, though) and your 'shopped color is just about identical to how mine is now with henna gloss-ish-ness! ("gloss-ish" because I started with a henna gloss, and I keep making the henna part stronger, lol. My next plan is to give the miss to the stuff-I-bought-at-the-Indian-grocery and perhaps go for some great BAQ-stuff that will turn my hair fiery...I'd like it to be similar to Nimia but I'm thinking my natural color might be slightly too dark to get it that bright, and it might shade more toward auburn. :( )

So, yeah, know that that IS what you'd look like with a bit of henna on! :) (actually, you-back-then looks sort of like you were/are my hair twin! Right now mine is just about that length, and if taken down with braid waves and you took a pic of me from the back, I bet you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between us!)

(I need to take a pic of my hair now, long and henna-reddish, and then scan one of my old senior pictures from high school, where my hair's in a chin-length bob and a bit blonder than my current natural color, and then find one when I was a kid and again had longer hair that was quite blond... {yeah, I'm one of those people who was blond as a kid and it keeps getting darker as I get older...})

Nimia, I love your red colour with all myself!
Madora, waht gorgeous locks you've always had!
Spidermom, I really like the dark magenta tone in your hair and that heatless afro is super cool!
StellaKatherine, I can't imagine how striking could be henna copper on your hair, I say go for it! (But I actually have a problem for how much I like ginger hair)

spidermom - soooo envious of the 'fro.

I too wanted an afro back in the '70s. Except, until my late 40's I had 1AAA hair. Super straight, frequently tortured with a curling iron to almost no avail. I got the perm, and half of the curl fell out in the parking lot :( I wore a hat for 6 months

This is the best sort of documented pictures i have. This is when i used to be pretty obssesed with layers, on the left is a HORRIBLE job done by a very crappy haidresser, she thinned the CRAP out of hair and ALSO she chopped it from HIP to THAT, i CRIED that day, i was so so very upset. The pic on the right shows how i USED to LOVE having my layered hair done, A fair few friends copied that as well, i LOVED IT SO MUCH!!! But these days, I sport a blunt hem, I dont think I will ever go for layers again, after two kids my hair just isnt that thick anymore. (Same color in my hair btw, just different lighting)

Some stylists are really terrible with layers; that's for sure. A friend has been cutting granddaughter's hair, and I was always unhappy with it because the stylist doesn't "get" thick hair. She did so much thinning that the hair just wouldn't lay right. We recently had granddaughter's hair cut at a different place and wow - what a difference. I never want the other stylist to get her hands on granddaughter's hair again, friend or no. Weird though, the friend does a really pretty job with my layers.

Freija
July 26th, 2014, 06:25 PM
I've found that, too. I have to start running if the stylist mentions 'thinning it out' or 'taking the weight out' or anything along those lines - because it invariably ends up with shears/razors, and a frizzy mess that doesn't have the length left to fall properly. But with the right layers, my hair looks a million times better than it ever could blunt-cut.

What a fun thread! I'm really enjoying everyone's pictures. I have been away for a while. I stopped being obsessed with length and became infatuated with color. First pic is when I was on LHC a ton and used to dye my hair black. 2nd pic is current with my new lighter color that took me many months to achieve. I still love super layered hair and will never go shorter than BSL for the rest of my life though! I want to grow it back to the length I had it before...

This is a fun thread!

So here is my timeline.. I'm warning you be prepared for many hair disasters! :run:

3years old: Ok, so my first picture is me when I was 3 years old. I had pretty hair and my mom kept them beautiful. She insisted to have them long. I always wore ponytails or French braids. I had my hair to waist until some hairdresser chopped them to a short pixie and I looked like a boy. That was when I was around 10 years old. Then I left my hair grow.
2004: I chopped them and dyed them for the first time when I hit puberty in 2004  You can see me all angry on the second picture. After that there was constant experimenting as you can see.
2004,2005,2006: From black to red to blonde and brown again.
2007: Because that was not enough experimenting I decided to get synthetic dreadlocks in 2007. My scalp was killing me so I decided to remove them after a couple of months.
2008: The result was a haircut in 2008. After that I was growing my hair long and natural colour. I was really happy with my hair.
2010,2012:My ex boyfriend was nagging me to colour my hair to black because it would suit me. That was a big mistake because it doesn't suit me :(. I dyed them black in 2010 and had them like that for two years.
2012: Then I found a special effect hair dye and bleached the bottom part of my hair and turned it purple. I loved that colour but it fried my hair so I was soon back to black.
2013: In 2013 I decided that I don't want experiments any more. I went to a hair dresser and asked them to strip colour. I was left with awfully fried hair (that is the first picture 2013). The second picture is also in 2013 after a major cut and colour repair from professionals that did that for FREE because they couldn't see me suffer. ( Can't thank them enough ).
2014: Last two pictures in 2014 are now after trimming most of the old damage and taking care of. It's not perfect yet but much better than before. I have had a lot of experiments but now I had enough for the rest of my life

The first picture is from a little over ten years ago, when I'd just cut and dyed my hair. The second is from -- 2008, maybe? I was in England, and my hair dried that way after a shower - it's NEVER had that much natural wave or volume at any other time. I don't know what was in the water there.

Your fake braids look amazing!!! Thanks for posting the link. I'm very tempted to order a braid myself, but am wondering how to handle the fact that my hair looks drastically different in different lighting situations because of the henna. Outdoors, my hair is a bright copper color, and indoors it looks dark brown in some light and brown with red shiny areas under other lighting conditions. As a henna head yourself, how do you handle the different base hair shades in different lighting? If this could be solved in a way that the hair piece also changed in different light, this could be an awesome solution to a problem I'm battling. I was recently diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and have a growing bald spot on the top right side of my head, behind my hairline. I've used plastic headbands to pull back my bangs that are growing out and the thicker headbands have helped to hide the worst part of the bald spot. Which braid did you buy? Did you get the kind that has elastics that go under the back of your hair to hold it on? If not, how do you hold it on?

I chuckled when I read your comment, mary*rose. Strange to say, I was born ready for a haircut (or so my parents told me). When I was 4 my mom curled my hair with a curling iron (yikes) so I could have Mary Pickford curls. (I still have some of those sausage curls. My mom, bless her memory, kept EVERYTHING!). Unfortunately, I developed asthma and the doctor ordered that my curls be cut.

I seriously started growing my hair in Aug. 1977 (I'd had it long before then, but after '77 I was on a mission). Mission accomplished (just about) this year. I've been inspired by the lovely LHC ladies with knee length- and longer hair! So much admiration for them! It takes such dedication and plenty of TLC to grow to those fantastic lengths!!

Oh dear, I didn't even think about how different henna looks, under different lighting; am I walking around with braids that match when I'm in the bathroom, but not when I'm at, say, a restaurant?? That said, they do match in both the bathroom and out in sunlight. Out of the swatches I was sent (I first ordered the natural red swatch pack, but then had to ask for the dyed red pack -- she's happy to send you however many types of swatches you need), I made a mix of 2/3 "amber berry" and 1/3 "dark auburn" to get a good color match. The dark auburn looks purple-brown, and the "amber berry" looks to be a combination of colors (bright copper and raspberry red), so perhaps having all that variegation in the braids helps to keep them looking right, in different lighting.

I bought the double braid headband, with elastics that go under the back of my hair. I just pull it on like a stretchy headband, easy-peasy.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely ask for some samples and place an order.

This thread inspired me to make a rainbow collage too, Ashflower89! And your eyes are fantastically green.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y266/Keyake/10yearsofhair_zps8fa72eb9.jpg

So these are in *roughly* chronological order. There are some color shifts missing that were redundant (there was another bright teal and bleached out blonde between the first and second red for example). This year was the first time in ten years that I let any of my natural hair color grow at all, and the first pictures in this list are actually more *likely* from 2002 or maybe even 2001 so it's not completely accurate.

I've banned myself from bleach for life (or at least until I reach TB length, which is a trick because by then I won't want to) but am a current henna head, so red again!

Ambystoma It looks like we were in a similar phase once in our lifetime  Black, black and more black! UGH :rockerdud You have amazing hair now. I hope I'll have similar hair one day.

Ambystoma, your toddler pic is so adorable! You've certainly done wonders with your hair. It looks so healthy and beautiful!

Wow thanks guys! I think this thread is pretty great inspiration - it shows how much everyone can improve with a little (or a lot) of time, gentleness and patience :heartbeat

Katyusha, I had a very, hmmm, carefree attitude towards my hair for a long time :P "It'll grow back!"... sigh. But I'm taking care of it now for sure, it hasn't looked this healthy since I was little, healthier really because I'm respecting the natural texture and not using horrible sulfatey S&C every day.

That was so sweet of her though :) I think my mom has some snips of my hair...but she also has my baby teeth. Omigosh I was looking for a piece of jewelry to borrow and she told me to open a certain drawer, and there they were, mixed in with my little brother's. :run: I was like actually, I'm fine, I think I have some of my own jewelry, thank you very much haha

It's great that you've finally met your hair goal! I'm still workin on mine :)

April 2012: Tailbone Length, and majorly bleached on the underside. Bleaching like this would cause half of my hair to break off a few months later.

moontree I know what you mean. I was questioning myself why my hair isn't longer and ignore my abuse. Straightening every day, dye changes, brushing really hard... you name it! Now that I think back I can't believe I was doing this to my hair shudder: I just tough it's not that damaging or something. At least I experimented almost all possible things and I'm definitely done :D Long hair is such a low maintenance hairstyle. It's awesome :hollie:

Laura_F I love how healthy your hair looks in last picture! I'm still dealing with bleached ends from one year ago when I went black to my natural brown. And I know how bad my ends were braking off when I bleached my bottom part of my hair... You can see it on my picture when I applied manic panic :D It was noticeably shorter that the rest of my hair :(

Your hair is the most gorgeous thing! I have so many questions! Where do you get your henna at? What is your natural color? How did you use it to do your hair? Do you have any pictures of your hair indoors? I tried henna once but I must have done something terribly wrong because it didn't even alter the color, I ended up grabbing a box dye and using that instead.

Such a fun thread!
The only time I've ever dyed my hair, when I was 14 (red streaks that faded quickly to bright orange!)(showing my face because I don't look like that anymore lol):
http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n120/Paisley_Love/Untitled_zps20a84d88.jpg (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Paisley_Love/media/Untitled_zps20a84d88.jpg.html)http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n120/Paisley_Love/Babushka_zps3e903bdb.jpg (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Paisley_Love/media/Babushka_zps3e903bdb.jpg.html)

Then the pixie and dye job to get rid of it (vowed to never dye again):

Found out that boyfriend liked long hair. His idea of long was shoulder length, turns out. My idea of long was...

Before my October chop:

Same reason a lot of people cut their hair: I was having a bit of a crisis during a time of transition. :p Silly me. My fiancé was moving away for a year and I did a lot of crazy things. But on the bright side, I know I can get back to where I was, and since I don't have layers or bangs to grow out it will probably look fuller, AND I'm starting my LHC regimen at a much shorter length so theoretically I should have fewer splits. I'm trying not to wallow in regret and instead see it as another exciting hair journey. :)

I'm in the same group as you're I loved my layers as a youth. I don't think my hair has thinned any but for some reason my layers don't lay right. I'm sorry you had a bad salon experience. Your hair nowadays is great.

Timeline Time!

Proof I was born with long hair:

(Taken the day I was born. It was already long enough they could tie that bow into it.)

The bangs phase, which lasted the entire time my mom did my hair, so pretty much from birth through middle school. Soooo glad those are gone now!
https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/v/t1.0-9/1002654_996376182700_1830141933_n.jpg?oh=e441a1794 9f13dae1de13722452b3858&oe=5497FC37&__gda__=1420275188_cf57a3b4b480cb4c90a8eaa88181873 a

Experimented in layers, but I've decided I'm not a fan of them on my head. I also REALLY need to whack off the 5 or 6 inches of split ends. I crave that paint-brush feel of a full hemline.
