What a great idea for a thread! Will have to take some time and look up all the characters you listed.

My number one inspiration is Eowyn! I first saw her when my hair was CL, and now she's my hair twin!

Others that have influenced me to want long hair: Claire (Lost), Dumbledore (Harry Potter), Cersei and Daenerys (GoT), most of Jane Austin female characters ... the list goes on, I just can't remember now :)

When I was a little girl I had this beautifully illustrated fairy tales book, and every princess/fairy had this magnificent long hair adorned with flowers and ribbons, and I used to spend hours watching at those images.
Since then I always wanted long hair, and never intentionally wore it shorter than waist.

Oh yes! Hers and Rikkus hair (although Rikkus is really not that long in LHC standars, haha) and while we're still in the world of gaming; Laura Croft. One day I'll have my hair in that braid, for sure!

Other than that, every picture painted of an elf, witch or medieval maiden. Rebeccas hair in the Ivanhoe movie from 1982 and every elf from LOTR, of course.

Also, not really characters of a tv show, but the women in Renoirs paintings have gorgeous hair. If I ever feel like cutting my hair, I toddle of to the next art gallery and relish in every painting of a woman with long hair ever made.

I nearly wrote Lara Croft too :D but then I took it back, because she had it in a bun in the early games and you couldn't see it and I'm not so keen on the hair in the newer games with TressFX. Her braid was epic though :) Some strange logic going on in my head there.

Cate Blanchett as both the young Elizabeth:

and as Galadriel:

Clearly, I'm going to need some long flowing garments to go along with the hair. :)

Well, I guess I'm showing my age a little more than some of you, but when I was young I wanted hair like Cher. When I got into high school, it was Jane Seymour from Live and Let Die.
Then, a few years later, I saw Julia Ormond as King Arthurs's Guinevere in First Knight.

Welp.. I'm a huge fan of historical films and television shows. There's no set character that's inspired me, but a combination of films and television.. But three films that come to mind: The Other Boleyn, Elizabeth and Elizabeth I. The hair in those films.. omg. Fake, but so long and beautiful.

Princess Isabelle de Capet in Braveheart. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/355995545518089794/

Murron in Braveheart: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/355995545518089799/

They were my first and most important long hair inspirations. Later came all the lovely fantasy characters also, like all the LOTR elves.

I think the first time i really noticed and like long hair in a movie was when dracula was on tv and wino ryder had this awesome flowing darkbrown mane. Also Julia Ormond in legends of the fall had super lovely hair i was sort of relating too, but i was little and knew nothing about haircare back then so it wasn't like i actually tried to grow it out, or expecting any kind of improvement at all. Also there is a japanese actress called Chiaki Kuriyama, i have always admired her hair so much and would totally wear it like this all my life if it was thaaat straight.

True that. I've wanted long hair for quite some time, but it wasn't until I started watching GoT that I got motivated to seriously try and grow it out. I really really want to be able to do all the awesome braided hairstyles from the show. :o

Amalthea from the Last Unicorn when i was a child

Loviatar
July 8th, 2014, 01:15 PM
I had long hair as a child so I can't say any characters inspired me. However there have been various characters in books since I joined LHC whom I've noticed for their hair, especially Leslie Ford in the Anne of Green Gables series and Jo Maynard in the Chalet School series.

From film, I always go with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Maid Marian in Robin Hood. She was the first real film hair idol I ever had, even though I will never have her hair type. Also Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman was the start of my red hair obsession :)

from television: Carolyn Jones in her Morticia wig, Aline Beringar in Cadfael, and more recently the characters Joan Holloway in Mad Men (for colour) and Charlotte York in Sex and the City.

Clearbrook in Elfquest. I'm not sure which made me more sad, that One-Eye died or that she cut her braid off.

July 8th, 2014, 04:26 PM
Lara Croft definitely! Since the first Tomb raider movie came out, I've allways wanted a braid like hers. Another one would be Julia Timoshenko's crown braid, allthought she's a real person, not a character, but it would be so cool to have a braid long enough to make a fake crown braid, that's my ultimate hair growing goal, and (sigh!) also thick enough, so it wouldn't look like a rats tail, damn health issues, and hair loss issues.

Hahaha, yeah, her hair in any version except the braid really isn't anything that special. But the braid! Oh, the braid is magical! This "Laura Croft-braid"-image is what I think about when I long for gorgeous hair.

The Game of Thrones ladies. 'nough said. lol. Although they look like helmets, I sorta love the season 1 and 2 King's Landing styles that Sansa and Cersei sport. Cersei's hair... I would kill for hair like that!

Since I was little, Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas! Lol!

Also Princess Fiona's hair on Shrek Forever After when she lets it out of the braid...

I need to find some non-animated inspiration.

I'm just going to name that left a huge impact on me as a little girl as opposed to outright inspiration. Definitely Sarah from Labyrinth's hair. All those jeweled hairtoys in the masquerade ball scene! And this cartoon that was on in the '80s, Lady Lovelylocks. It was about a princess with masses of hair that had magical powers. Definitely Ariel from The Little Mermaid, also.

For me it was Galadriel and Arwen. I think I was 12 years old when I first saw the LOTR films and my jaw dropped when I saw all the gorgeous hair/wigs. It had never really occurred to me before that people could grow their hair that long! :p

Ooh, another from when I was a little kid was Rose from Titanic (I remember I was 5 when it came out and my mom had to take me to the theater when she went to see it). I actually handmade one of Rose's dresses last year for Halloween, which I might re-wear again this year to parties, especially if I henna my hair ^_^

Jane Seymour when she played Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and around that same time I was obsessed with Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House Books. There's a great description of Laura's hair being down to her knees, fine and very thick. Those would be my first inspirations, even though I didn't start growing my hair until much later.

July 9th, 2014, 02:50 AM
My inspirations for long hair would be the lady from the movie Splash-Daryl Hannah as a mermaid, Crystal Gayle-the country singer with absolutely gorgeous long hair, the actress who played on the Munsters with long black hair and a white stripe in it, Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon, and Mary from Little House On the Prairie. (Im mid's 40s lol) Oh yeah, and every "longhair" from LOTR. Also, the women of Practical Magic.

Rapunzel (all versions, but I looooove Disney's Rapunzel), of course. And Amir/Amira from Kaoru Mori's manga "Bride's Story".

Okay, let's face it. I adore all longhairs in Kaoru Mori's works. Emma's hair is closest to mine, just longer, and it's gorgeous.

I cant think of a specific princess, but the movie The Princess Bride for sure, also Brian Froud's faery art work, Sailor Moon, and Chi from chobits. I had chi as my avatar for the longest time. Oh yes, and Lara Croft as some of you said. When the original game came out, I was just in awe of that hair lol. Also when I was younger a few girls I was friends with or knew were my long hair inspiration. When I was in elementary school a girl named Kathleen always had a long braid, and this other girl named Gabriella had this long shiny silky brown hair. Everyone loved her hair. In high school my best friend had BCL hair and I ended up getting mine to hip, but ended up chopping it because I hated how my school year photo looked lol. We ended up drifting apart and our Senior year she chopped her hair off into a boy-ish cut. Oh memories lol

The First Knight was one of my favourite live action movies when I was a kid. I never really understood what the movie was truly about until I got older but I just looooooved Guinevere's hair and clothes and I wanted to learn to sword fight because of Lancelot hehehe

I mean just look at those braids! I'm so doing this hairstyle tomorrow! Mines in a Dutch crown right now :P

For me, it's definitely Lúthien Tinúviel, from the tale of Beren and Lúthien in the Silmarillon. Not only is she beautiful, but capable. She escapes from captivity by weaving a magic cloak--from her hair! She also has amazing night-dark locks. She's awe-inspiring in many other ways, but her hair is incredible, and the length is my inspiration. I mean, how many people do you know with hair long enough to weave a magic cloak?

Then of course, she goes and performs superhuman feats to rescue her imprisoned love, defying all odds, but, you know, her HAIR...:p

For me, all the women (especially Eowyn and Galadriel) in LOTR; Rapunzel (esp. from Tangled, although of course no human hair would grow that long); Laura Ingalls Wilder in "These Happy Golden Years" (she has knee length hair); Buttercup from The Princess Bride; and Bess in the poem "The Highwayman." There are probably others, but I can't think of them right now. :)

Tolkien characters and Guinevere (Lena Headey in Merlin) mostly. But also old classic paintings of women (Birth of Venus by Botticelli, for example), very old photographs of long haired women (Julia Margaret Cameron and the like), Little Women (1994), and many other characters that I don't remember now. But most of all, fantasy-elven and medieval manes, are my inspiration :)

I know I have a ton of hair inspirations I can't even remember right now, but I can of course remember Phoebe from the first season of Friends (my avi of course), her hair was so pretty! Then in later seasons she changed styles a lot and she always looked great but those long lovely waves are my favorite :) I'll definitely be returning to this thread when I think of my list haha

Arwen, Eowyn, Elrond and Sailor Moon are top of my list. Daenerys is a recent addition too- I wish my hair was thicker so I could do some of those braids!!

I used to really want long curly hair similar to Christine's in Phantom of the Opera, specifically Sarah Brightman's.

Rapunzel is my all time favorite, but I also love the Goose girl.
I suppose almost every girl wanted to be a princess at some time in its life. ^^"

I also liked Eowyn in Lord of the Rings and a load of Manga characters, like Sailor Moon and Sara Mudo from Angel Sanctuary.
And of course a lot of renaissance paintings of Maria Magdalena and the Venus.

Princess Merida, her hair is, obviously, amazing.
While I'll never have that gorgeous red colour, it's nice to see a character with hair as wild and untamable as my own. She completely converted me to fairy-tale ends, I used to be a huge fan of blunt ends, but hers are so lovely.
As an aside, has anyone else noticed she has like three different hair types? I swear her curls are everywhere from 3a to 3c!

When I was a very little girl, it was a real person who made me want long hair - singer/songwriter Kate Bush! In later years I've also come to admire Princess Fiona from Shrek, the girls in 'Little House On The Prairie', and a very old friend who used to have the most magnificent dark golden blonde tailbone length dreads! :)

I'd believe it, curls are weird like that.

Though it makes me wonder if my hair can even grow that long, or if I'd hit terminal length before hip length.

Only one way to find out, I suppose!

When I was a little girl, Princess Leia was the first princess I knew about. She is the reason I kept my hair long throughout childhood.

The reason I keep it long now is because it’s part of me, and I love it. But it all started with Princess Leia.

I've always had reasonably long hair, like bra strap length. But when I was 12, I saw Victor Nikiforov, a character from a Japanese animation series called Yuri on Ice. I was a huge fan of that show back then, and he had such lovely long hair in the flashback scenes, I wanted that too. Later I got an internet friend (we started talking because we both watched that show) that drew lots of elf characters with super long beautiful hair. Those drawings inspired me as well. Now I just want to look like the medieval queen of my dreams haha. I feel much more confident now my hair is longer than most people's. I feel unique (not saying people with short hair aren't. They obviously are, but having a trait or feature that stands out a bit is always nice!).

No characters, although I always thought Rapunzel was the coolest thing. I also love Galadriel from Lord of the Rings. But honestly, I decided to grow it out when I was looking at some old selfies and realized that the longest my hair has ever been is about APL, and I liked the natural, relaxed way it made me feel to have hair that long. So I sort of inspired myself ... I guess. Is that weird?

It's true ... and also it's kind of reflective of a character trait, in a way. Not saying that people with short hair don't have this trait, but the fact that someone has the patience and resilience to grow their hair kind of says something about their personality, I think.

It´s actually a LOT of characters, both from books, movies, cartoons and manga/anime.
Mostly fantasy characters ;)
Arwen Evenstar and Galadriel from LOTR movies, of course. But also Umi from Rayearth and Rei, Michiru and Queen Selene from Sailor Moon. These are just my childhood and early teens old classics. Then, when I was older, I really admired Daenerys hair as it was described in the books; I love Emilia Clarke and I think she is a wonderful Khaleesi and Dragon Queen, and I like how her Targaryen appearance was rendered... but but but, but it´s not just the same ;).
I really like how Rumiko Takahashi draws hair (expecially on Inuyasha and Ranma). It´s not particularly realistic, but it´s so cute!
As for small artists teams/western webcomics, I love Drowtales characters´ hair! Most characters in that saga sport long hair, so I can´t really choose a single one.

When I started my hair journey I had freshly dyed my hair black, and I wanted to look something between Orochimaru-sama and some kind of japanese demons. But at that time (late 2018coolguy) I simply wanted longer hair because I hate how the length I had suits me (between APL+ and WL-) but actually Orochimaru-sama has something as MBL.
Now that I have some kind of ombre with blonde lengths and waves, Galadriel is who I think about. I'm looking for a kind of elvish look in my hair at the moment.
Hilariously, usually I like characters with about BSL/MBL (I prefer male characters and longer hair isn't frequent) but some rare exceptions.
I don't know what I will think when I'll have more natural color in may hair.

I was never really inspired by fictional characters. I am however, always inspired by new real life people. Britt was the last in a row, the push I needed , to grow really long. Beyond common. Everything before that was on an envy level. Like : "I wish I had her hair." But never really went for it, never had that decision moment, and research that I found here, the real life people who went through it with some real tips...Before, when I asked a girl with tbl what did she do, she would be like it's genetics, and I don't use heat tools.. I mean I've never gotten a good advice in a world beyond LHC...Girls here are always inspiring.

There was this one specific person in one episode of Da Vinci's Demons that I was not able to find by name later. :/ But she had very long, silver, wavy hair worn loose.

And recently, the half-ups in The Untamed! The wigs are not great, but ohh, it made me wish for a lot more length to go along with it. Especially their gorgeous accessories (in this case the topknot "holders" which, as far as I know, are called guan and were used to hold all hair, not a half-up).

To be honest I've always loved a fairytale or fantasy aesthetic. Think medieval, dragons, Victorian gothic, magic, etc. There's a lifetime of influence there from fairytales when I was young (and old) to my current reading and tv habits.

Side note- there is a archetypal link between long hair and power / wisdom. Wizards, witches, mages, sorcerous' more often than not have long hair. Biblically there are stories of hair length being associated with power. I spent a couple of years practicing kundalini yoga, and there it's suggested to let hair grow because it's a source of energy and vitality. :magic:

Oh yes, I also love Daryl Hannah's hair in Splash too! When I first saw Jane Seymour in Somewhere In Time I often wondered what did she use on it to get that sparkling shine she had during the "Picnic Scene?" Oh, and her hair in Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman is to die for! I've always dreamed of having her hair color and length on that show! I'm also now re-watching as well. Well, I'm watching it on my DVD'a I purchased many years ago. I have every last one of the episodes. Including the 2 movies that they made after the show was canceled.

My fictional inspo are all from books, so no pics or films, just words and my imagination lol.

The main characters in two urban fantasy series: Jane Yellowrock and Mercy Thompson from their books by Faith Hunter and Patricia Briggs, respectively. They are both shapeshifters, but Jane especially has these really epic descriptions of how her hair hits her hips every time she shifts back to human and the elaborate hairstyles concealing an ever-growing and ridiculous number of weapons for her vampire hunting lifestyle. So so trashy and delicious and inspiring.
