Yep, this works, I've done this successfully many times in the past.
Unfortunately, when a bobby pin gets out of shape quickly, it means it's not the best quality, so even if you fix it, the widening tends to happen again pretty fast.

Great tip, I go through bobby pins like crazy do this will save me binning them :)
