How long is your braid in comparison to your hair length down? Pictures are welcome!

You can't see in my avatar picture, taken in 1992, but my braid was between BSL and waist. I hope to get back to that length, this time without bangs. My fine hair might look a teensy bit thicker ... one can hope:pray:

Because my hair is so thick, my BSL hair looks barely APL in a braid. :( I really like my braids, but they eat up all my length!

My loose length is hip, and my braid length is around bsl/mbl. I still cannot do any braided buns at this stage because of this.

When loose, my hair is at hip. When braided, it usually bounces up to about BSL or maybe a bit shorter.

Loose. Very shiny. Fresh henna ombre, taken in May.

French rope braided, I think this was within the last 6 months.

Hawser braid, taken sometime late last year.

French herringbone, taken in the last month or so, I think. I didn't do this on my hair. My daughter did it for me.

Laura and madora, you both have AMAZING looking hair. Laura, the variety of braids is very nice to see.

as a tightly curly, my braid is actually longer than the appearance of my hair unbraided (though its not as long as my actually IS when stretched). As you can see in the photo in my siggy, my braid is fairly close to APL, though not there yet. When my hair is loose, it varies between somewhere around my ears and somewhere very slightly below my shoulders depending on the--I don't know what. The way the stars are aligned? the tides? I have no clue whatsoever.
However if you pull on my hair so that its stretched straight, its somewhere around bottom bra strap currently.
If I was to flat iron, it would be a little longer than that, probably mid back, but I'm not going to flat iron so that will have to remain theoretical. If someone asks how long my hair is (which does happen, surprisingly enough) I just say its about shoulder length curly but stretches to about bra strap.
Anyway, my braid definitely appears longer than my loose hair.

I would say from TB+ to hip probably. It always bums me out to seeing it look shorter than usual.

LauraLongLocks and Madora Wow! Amazingly gorgeous hair and braids. Thank you both for sharing!

chen bao jun That is surprising ... I definitely would have thought that tightly curly hair would make shorter braids. My hair is relatively thick and curly and with my bsl hair my braid is around apl or a little longer. Ugh! I wish the braid looked as long as my hair is down. Even though that isn't too long either.

Thank you! Oddly enough, I can't find a picture of a normal english braid! I guess I need to get on braiding and snap a picture of it.

my hair is maybe a smidge above classic length when down and is hip length when in a very unfancy side braid. I actually get more comments on the length when it's braided versus when it's down. I'm looking forward to my braid reaching classic length, i wonder how long my hair will have to get for that!

That's some awesome hair, guys! :D
I'm at TBL loose, waist/hip braided. When my hair was at midback, I think I had a super-short braid, if I remember correctly.

Is it just me, or is it true that as hair gets longer, the length differential between hair loose and braided is getting smaller? I think I'm seeing this on Madora's awesome pictures, for example.
It could be that the biggest "reduction" in length happens at early stages of braiding (at the nape)... Or maybe when hair is shorter, we tend to braid tighter, thus using up more length?
Or is it just an optical illusion, since past a certain point, hair looks long anyway?

Meteor, I think when the hair is longer (past waist) the differential is a little less...depending on how tightly/loosely you braid. The angle of the photos can have a bearing on appearances too!

One advantage of less thick hair is that my braid eats length but not as much as others here. My braid is hip length and my hair is bcl down.

Depending on the braid... usually I go from knee hair down to a little past classic hair braided, but it can be longer or shorter based on the number of strands and the weave.

I'm brushing fingertip down, and my braid is about 2-3" shy of classic depending on how loose it is and how much of a tail I wind up with.

I'm hoping to get a chance to take some pics this weekend after my trim - if I do I'll definitely come back and share! :)

Madora, awesome hair, and I love your silvers.

Decided I had to take an english braid shot, since apparently I didn't have any.

The flexi8 hits just below my bra strap.

I think braids definitely eat up length when one's hair is shorter. My braids are only now just starting to look long (to me) now that my loose hair is just about to my tailbone. My braids are a little past waist, but double braids are a bit longer, about hip length.

So today I learned that trying to get a good picture of my fine, straight hair outdoors is like trying to nail water to the wall. Anyway, I got a couple of OK pictures - you can see the difference in length between my hair loose and my braid.

Length pic:
(You can also really see the demarcation line between my natural hair color and my pre-LHC Sun-In color. That doesn't usually show up so well in my pictures.)

My hair is hip-length and thick, so in a single braid it shrinks up to around waist. Not as much as some others, but still pretty noticeable. I'll take comparison shots sometime--this seems neat!

Great thread idea! I'm closing in on TBL and braided falls between waist and hip, depending on how much tassel I leave.

I'm in the same boat, here. I always have my hair braided, but since it's just about classic, the braid is still pretty long, so I get a lot of comments on my hair's length at work. I do, however love taking it out of a bun and seeing the 0.o look on people's faces...

I think it's because of the proportion. For example, if braiding takes off three inches of hair, there's gonna be a huge proportional difference between APL and classic. Like, 2:1 versus 10:9 haha.

But I think you have a good idea there with the tightness of the braid. I usually braid looser now, because I think loose braids look prettier. However, they aren't as functional...

Loose hair: knee
Low English plait: between classic and fingertip
French plait / higher English plait: somewhere shorter ... tbl maybe?

I have fairly thin hair and bad taper (thus, less eating up of length) but plait really tight as my hair is so slippery (so, more length-eating).

Mine is 4.5 inches from my waist when down when braided in English braid it's bsl.

Not a very good photo... But here are my lenght when hair open and when braided. I measured my braid is about 5 cm (1,9 inches ) shorter in lenght while english braided. But I guess because my hair is wavy and the braid isn't very thick, so you can't see much of a difference :)

My hair is past fingertip-length, in the neighbourhood of mid-thigh, but my braid tassel only falls a bit past classic length. My hair is a good deal thicker than it has been in the past, because I've just had a baby and am still nursing. :p I fully expect a good shedding when I stop.

Here's comparison shots of my braided versus loose hair! My braid tassel usually hovers a bit above/below waist (right around my elbows), and loose is solidly hip (a couple inches past them). It just looks like way more shrinkage because it goes from "braid" to "cape." XD

My hair is almost Hip and my braid tassel ends about halfway between BSL and Waist.

Thickness eats up a lot of length. Main reason why I don't like braids. I'm at hip+, though I wouldn't be able to tell you where my braid tassel ends (no braids since I started growing back out).

I find that with my thickness and coarse hair, it only loses a few inches because it just won't bend or compress that much.
