I wanted to start a thread for hairstyle pictures for those of us who have BSL and shorter hair. It's nice to see the Styles people are using while they are growing out their hair. Please list how long your hair is (as in APL, BSL etc) so we can tell if it's a style we could use as well!

here is my knot braid on my APL wavy hair:

Oh that's so pretty! I'm at APL and still can't do anything but a cinnabun (one full twist plus some) secured with a hair tie because of how thick my hair is (ETA: and because my shortest layers are at collarbone). And I'm really tired of just throwing my hair up in a bun every day! I need ideas!

Oh, a great idea for a thread. That knot looks beautiful!

Here's a twist with spin pins and decorative poppy pins that I could do at shoulder length.

I agree, this is a good idea for a thread! My hair is just beyond my shoulders so I do mostly twists, although the Wrapped Hairstick Bun is very doable at my length. The photos posted so far are very pretty, indeed.

Sparklylady82, your knotbraid has a lovely bohemian look to it, it is so pretty.

Nesoi, love the twist, they are my go to up-dos these days. I especially like the poppy pins!!

I have posted this photo in the Curly Buns Thread, but it will do very well here, also. It is a twist (of course:p) held with a small flexi 8. The small flexi holds nice and snug and I gently pulled the loose ends up and placed them in various directions.

I really like the way you used the french braid as an accent, it adds just the right touch to your up-do, Sparklylady82.

Here is an updo that I have been working on for a while now. Given my length, the nape hairs always manage to escape and it looks undone. But, yesterday I managed to get it a little tighter and therefore it held much better. Perhaps my hair has actually grown a bit.:cheer:

Two photos were needed because I was taking them myself and it was difficult to get the updo to show nicely in one photo. I started twisting the hair (boho twist) from the right side of my head, keeping the twist low, and then ended on the left side of my head, securing the low side ponytail with a small claw clip.

I subscribe to many boho tutorials on youtube because with my 2b/3a hair, they look the best. Messy, unplanned updos are my favourite because they are intentionally that way...... and so is my hair!

*Sparkly* Spin Pins are these (http://www.boots.com/en/Goody-Simple-Styles%E2%84%A2-Spin-Pin_1190542/). I use the mini ones. They are amazing!! They don't snag hair, twist in and out so smoothly, and do the work of about 20 bobby pins. I love them!

I have between shoulder and APL hair.
I've found I can do a version of the treble clef bun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nop-I6Dftb4
I split my hair into 2 sections, twist the lower one around to make the rounded bit and the top one for the loop. Need to secure with pins and then a hair stick but that's just my hair

Sparklylady82} There are tons of gorgeous hairtoys over at etsy.com, and mr. Jeter sells his forks there. (It's very easy to get addicted, just so you know, I already have four Jeterforks and a fifth on the way... :o) Here's the link to his shop: https://www.etsy.com/se-en/shop/Jeterforks

As for flexi-8s, you can find them both at flexi8.com and lillarose.biz. :)

I divide my hair in two section, twist them in opposite directions, then lay the twists at the nape, one above the other, and tuck the excess lenght of the lower twist above the upper twist, and the excess lenght of the upper twist under the lower twist. Then pin it until it feels secure. I found it very comfortable to wear!

My explanation is atrocious, but I think I got the idea from a tutorial somewhere. When I'm on a computer I'll try and post it. :)

Henna was indeed involved at one point (my blonde hair had started to turn green and I had to fix it), but underneath there's a lot of bleach and dye, I think it'd turn a much darker red over my natural hair (which I'm trying to grow out, so maybe we'll see at some point). ;)

I found the tutorial that I originally took the idea from, but it looks a lot neater and less fluffy than mine. http://thebeautydepartment.com/2011/12/short-stuff/

I have to say these are some of the most gorgeous updos I have seen. I am extremely impressed. This makes me excited to start learning to do something other than a peacock twist with my hair. I suspect I may need to remove my last few layers since my hair is baby fine with no substance but I am very hopeful and inspired now. I really wish to learn how to do my hair and this thread is the push I need to practice.

Another member here, two_wheels, sported this up-do in another thread and I was so curious as to how she made it work. When I asked her she told me it was a french twist, that we are all mostly familiar with, but instead of using a FT hair comb or a fork, she used two hair sticks.

So here is my attempt at the up-do, using two 5inch Ketlyo hair sticks. The photo was taken in the early morning and it had cast a gold tone to my hair, making it look almost like it did before I went silver.

So here is my attempt at the up-do, using two 5inch Ketlyo hair sticks. The photo was taken in the early morning and it had cast a gold tone to my hair, making it look almost like it did before I went silver.

Green hair is only a positive thing if the colour green is what you are aiming at I imagine :) Which is your natural colour then, if I may be so bold as to ask?

I am not good at styliing whatsoever, so I am amazed at what everyone does! Here's my one updo I can pull off.

http://i58.tinypic.com/2ueihqv.jpg

It's just a french braid that gets tucked up underneath with some clips and bobby pins.

Your braid looks lovely, hexbomb!:crush:

This is one of my favourite ways to wear my hair and I like to add a ficcare or flexi8 to give it some added interest.

Ok, here are mine... picturebomb alert.

These were all taken in the shoulder-APL doldrums. This is the point where I normally resort to a ponytail every day and then end up with a breakage-mullet :silly: This time round, I decided to learn some new updos instead.

1. Braids. I love braids. I can dutch braid too but not as comfortably.
Left to right:
a) this was on chin-shoulder length hair actually. Lace braid the sides, twist the ends, bobby pin it until it stops moving
b) tucked French braid, just do a regular one, poke the braid end under & bobby pin/spin pin/fork/flexi 8 to keep it there
c) folded braid, do a regular french braid and fold the end up, secured with flexi 8 here but you can use bobby/spin pins/small ficcare or whatever
d) regular French braid tarted up with some pretty pins
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/Braids1_zps8d626cef.png

2. Buns
Left to right:
a) twist it up and back down again, smoosh into a flexi 8/barrette. Not sophisticated but hey, it stays in place. This worked well before I had enough length for the other two
b) lazy wrap bun modified for teeny hair as per this video. I could do this from about 21" I think (it's hard to measure my hair). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb-CDSW1euU You can do this with pretty much anything- sticks, fork, ficcare
c) cinnabun. These only started to work very recently, as in the last couple of weeks. I'm about 1" from APL now. I can only get it to work with forks, or spin pins
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/Buns1_zps3393bf65.jpg

3. Twists
Left to right:
a) French twist with stick, I followed this video for instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHQwLBvwoZE You can use a fork the same way, or you can use a curved fork sideways with the same pivoting technique.
b) Flipped French twist, similar to this video (skip to 1:45) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaV2ihKkBls, you can do this with sticks too
c) French twist with ficcare, once you get the placement right these are rock solid and very comfortable, I love it
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/Twists1_zps62883707.png

Err that's enough from me!

ETA: I forgot the parandas!
a) braided bun, French braiding it all the way to the end and loop around
b) giant lazy wrap: French braid a couple of bumps to fix it on your head, then make a lazy wrap with everything
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/Parandas_zpsd2611b4d.png

Two_wheels, what an inspirational post! I get frustrated and give up too easily trying updos at our length, and end up with a twist held with spin pins, an octopus clip or the eye of Sauron (see avatar) every day. I would like to switch it up more as I am concerned about twisting my hair in the same place every day.

Your post has given me so many ideas and a push to keep trying. Thank you! :beerchug:

TWO_WHEELS HEEEEELP. How do you do the twist without the front of your hair messing up? I followed the video and I can get it to hold like a ROCK, which is awesome! But the front of my hair twists up in the air when I told the free ends down behind the roll. The sides are pulled in tight so I look like a very surprised shark .

Also the roll seems to be sideways on the back of my head. What am
I doing wrong??

Thanks Nesoi, Miss_Green, Beezle, sparklylady82 and luluj!

Nesoi, nothing at all wrong with spin pins... I adore them! For the twists, I think maybe you are twisting the hair too many times? Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaKHPs4D1ik) is another video. In this one you can see, she twists it at most twice, then pushes the hair up along the twist. If you're used to cinnabuns, you may need to start twisting at a different angle. Also, I get a fuzzy bump on top of my head too sometimes, very annoying, I am not sure exactly why but it seems to be that I need to change the parting in front znd/or the height of the initial ponytail- when I fiddle with those it seems to help.

Miss_Green, you could try lace braiding the sides, the result looks much more difficult than the process (that's my kind of updo :p)

Nellon, Torrin Paige on youtube is your learn-to-braid buddy :)

I can just about squish my hair into a medium for a centre-held bun like lazy wrap. Medium works well for things like folded braids, too. Minis for braid ends.

At the moment I cannot use large, but suspect I might have to move on in about a year's time. They're not hugely expensive though, so I would suggest going for a small number of mediums with a view to upsizing :)

Oh, yes- mine is 3.25"ish hence squeezy squeezy for the medium. I saw Fericera's 1c/2a/M/ii and assumed it would be the same as mine because I'm in the middle of ii, but I was wrong.

Cannot wait to try fraulein_doktor's twist and luluj's gibson tuck when I get home tonight! I'm about shoulder length at the moment so should be able to manage I think.

What an inspirational thread - I never knew I had so many options at this length. I've been wanting to try out some updos as a protection mechanism but was never really into hair do's before I joinded LHC so it's a learning curve for me!

I agree with you, this thread is inspirational, and yes there are many options for those of us who are BSL or shorter! Have fun playing around with some up-dos when you get home.

Now, here is another from me, using my medium flexi 8 in a simple peacock twist.

Ooh, so much pretty going on here! Wish I could share some pretty styles I do but the truth is that I don't! ;-) I get up and if the hair isn't already twirled up into a bun I do that and that's how I live my life right now. Hopefully I'll either have more time to do it one day or learn something else that I manage to do in the same amount of time (about 30 seconds!)

I can't contribute either as I can do only two "updo's"; a sort-of modified lazy French twist by 4ypn0tica and a (I can't think of any other way to describe it) folded pony tail. Desperately waiting for the delivery of a Jeterfork and two Ketylo sticks with which I hope to immediately become a bun artiste. Haha, as if!

Haha, yes, I'm pretty sure I'll love those ficcares a lot! Today I found a pretty butterfly claw clip just randomly strolling about town. I'm pretty sure that'll look nice holding a braided bun!
All those nice hairstyles in here are encouraging me (and others too I think!) to have confidence that one doesn't have to have really long hair to do something nice with it.

My favourite topknot! Front and back. This is held with my sword, but a few bobby pins to catch the shorter pieces at the back. In a couple of months I think I won't need the bobby pins at all :) I wear this all the time.

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad235/ohnointernetto/Topknotfront_zps8cacc6ef.jpg (http://s939.photobucket.com/user/ohnointernetto/media/Topknotfront_zps8cacc6ef.jpg.html)

And a Dianyla braid. I feel this is a stepping stone between English and French, until I get that figured out, and also makes the braid look longer on shorter hair because you get more 'bumps'. My tassel veers off to the side slightly, more due to a lack of length than anything. This is the first single braid I've managed since my head was shaved :o

Yes, I shaved it just over two years ago! I had waist-length hair which I pixied, and then got fed up with going to the hairdresser so I shaved it at home for several months! I'm pleased with the regrowth and I do love being able to reach back and give my braid a good 'squidge'! :p

Yup, exactly! It's the end of the stuck in the middle akward phase I think :) Actually, my whole reason for growing my hair out was wanting a long braid down my back! Actually, my whole reason for growing my hair out was wanting a long braid down my back! (Was living in Asia and everyday saw all those girls with black, shiny long braids. Soo pretty!) I feel there's nothing more feminine than a long, pretty, thick braid.

I am a huge fan of Eastern Asian cinema, wuxia in particular, and the hair is a huge inspiration to me! Long braids are gorgeous and it's so great that shorter lengths can join in the braiding fun too!

The hairstyle took less time than the image upload! It's easier than a regular french twist. Brilliant.

I tried swapping out the pins for a vertical stick, that holds very nicely too. An all round excellent recommendation. I love this thread

Edit: Also works very very well with forks that are currently too long. :bounce: this is the updo I've needed for ages

Somehow braids is something almost magical to me! Maybe it has to do with when you were small and braiding was like a mystery! :) I didn't mean that only long braids look good, short braids are just as wonderful!

Oh I know! I just meant that a lot of buns etc require longer lengths, but braiding is something which can be achieved at really very short lengths, even if it's just a tiny accent or lace braid. Yay braiding, basically! I really want to concentrate on improving my skills in that area.

I'm super glad that worked; it's beautiful on you! I love wearing it too! BTW, are those Bijoux Manoel pins? They're great for this, I have some too! Have you tried Elemiah Delecto pins? If so, how do you like them?

Thanks! I am so happy with it, especially because I realised it works with long sticks & giant forks so I have lots more options to wear things :D

Yup, they're Bijoux Manoel. I have drooled over Elemiah Delecto but haven't bought yet. I am jobless at the moment so can't spend, and there is a 20% off BM sale on at the mo, and I just got a refund on my paypal, and.... yeah, really tempted  Which pins do you have?

In BM I have a large dragonfly, the hummingbird, the little dragon, the set of leaves and a lizard, and the set of enameled butterflies. I've been drooling over the ED pins for about a month now. There is a review here that says they are not quite of the same quality as the BM pins. Part of the reason I like the braided twist is that I can use my pretty toys! I have fine, thin hair so I need a sturdy do to hold some things.

OK Loviatar, not to highjack this thread (but I think it's relevant to the folks who are interested in the braided twist). How do the Elemiah pins compare to the Bijoux? I'm very interested 'cause I'm contemplating a relatively big purchase (I like to get a bunch at once to take advantage of combined shipping).

Ravenheather, when you did your Dutch braid with a bun at the bottom, did you use an elastic to hold the braid before bunning? Was it a nautilus bun? I am trying to think of what to do with the tail after braiding, besides tucking it under. Thank you.

My hair is past BSL now so I can't do this updo anymore. But when I had shorter hair I really liked to twist and braid sections randomly and then pin them back into a fun, bohemian looking bun. I also often wore a headband in the front. This works for hair that is between chin length and BSL. I can try and get one of my shorter-haired friends to take pictures of to explain better how this works and how the end result works. Let me know if you guys are interested!

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I'm interested in any style that can be done at such short lengths! Lol. If it's not too much trouble. :flower:

Alright, I'll do what I can. I'll start asking around or see if I have a pic of myself wearing it somewhere. It was one of my favorite hairstyles, so that isn't unlikely.

Here are two updos I can manage now, at 19" (not yet APL); my hair is on the thin side though, which means I can do some buns earlier than people with a bigger ponytail circumference.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13151&d=1411048932

This is a sort of flipped-up cinnabun, held with a 3-prong Jeterfork (4,5" functional length).
A regular cinnabun is still very spikey and tends to unwind, but this works!

And there is also this one:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13124&d=1410966703

which is a French Twist made according to these instructions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaV2ihKkBls), held with another Jeterfork (4 prongs, 4" functional length).

I couldn't even manage a French Twist when my hair was longer, but these instructions made it click for me! :cheer:

Ooooh! Think I'll have to have a good look at this thread later (hair at BSL just now). Currently my hair is in what I call my lazy hair day up-do. 'Normal' plait, folded up on itself with the ends neat against my scalp, and then pinned in.

Cool thread. I wish it had been around when my hair was APL and shorter so I could have known about the many options out there. I'm currently at BSL, but here's a picture from about a year ago of one of my super lazy hardly even an updo styles. It's just two English braids clipped to the back of my head with a small claw clip. I think my hair was about CBL in this picture.

Here is my hair in today's "Kaylee buns." Ignore the messiness of the back of my hair; it's been up all day and I went to the gym this evening, so it was probably neater and prettier when I first did it this morning, LOL.

I realized after I got my hair pinned up that I didn't have the buns exactly symmetrical on my head, but I needed to start working and didn't really have the time to make it symmetrical.

I'm going to jump in with you guys! I've been doing a lot of experimenting with curlers overnight lately so I've been wearing it down more...but I've sort of gotten frustrated with it lately (the time between shoulder and APL seems like forever! And I'm tall so it's more like 4-5 inches.) so I think might switch to wearing it up for a while. I'll try to post some pictures soon :-)

AZDesertRose

I know the feeling, AlexDig. I decided to start wearing mine up more because I do want it to grow longer, and updos tend to be more protective. I love this thread because it has so many lovely ideas for updos. I decided within the last week to try to wear my hair a different way as often as possible to avoid breakage as much as I can. Inspiration, YAY! :)

This thread is awesome, it's given me so many ideas!

So far the only bun that stays for me with only a hair fork is a LWB. I'm not really sure I'm doing it properly and it looks pretty messy and small :p These are only LWB instructions that have worked for me so far: http://youtu.be/TTt771qkO24
I think it's due to my hair being not quite long enough (1.5 in to BSL) and layers. I would love to take a picture, but I guess I have to practice my hair selfie skills :D

Tonight I tried a tucked french braid and messed it up nicely:

One lazy sunday afternoon I tried the laced braids (cross reference with hairstyle of the month, but I'm proud of it):

And this flower bun I managed to get in before work, but it needs more bobby prins than I like (and also one elastic). It does get the size of a sock bun without stuffing for me:

I figured out last week how to get some soort of Pha bun working for me. Stick and fork work really well with it. I'll take some pictures soon. My hair is inching up on APL, but I'm tall and my hair is thin and fine, so I might be way ahead in the game.

Seventy, you did an awesome job! I love all of them.

This bun isn't anything impressive, but for those who have layers or are growing out bangs I thought I'd show how I use clip to keep everything in place (and for a little decoration).

Beautiful, Fericera, thank you! I will be trying that. I have a few clips that I can try with it. I don't have many barrettes as my hair has been short and also is very slippery. But I have discovered that using them with updos they work very well.

Right this moment the Gibson Tuck is my favorite, lol. And my hair stays up in it very well.

Gibson tucks are great! They're one of my favorites. I like things that stay in/up with no fuss.

If you do look for barrettes I got mine from Gallery Ennis on Etsy. I like their barrettes because they're hair friendly. The base clip that they bead the design onto is all one piece of metal with no hinges.

Peacock twist with a France Luxe volume barrette that is only *just* big enough to hold my hair. I'm still two or three inches from APL, so I usually do some kind of twist. Braids only work when my hair is wet so until I get some more length this is my everyday style.

Oh no, I made the mistake of looking at the France Luxe site....sigh

Thank you! :)

Sorry about the FL enabling! I do love this barrette but I have a few other pieces and I don't think their quality matches the price on some of them.

Can someone tell me if I am right on hair forks.......since my hair is short and fine won't a fork with more tines work better for me? And I am thinking that a wire fork will work better than wood or am I wrong about that? I love the wooden ones but it looks like they might overpower my hair right now. Thanks for any advice. I'm wanting to collect a few things now even tho my hair will grow (I hope!).

I think you're right on both those things. Thinner is easier to get into short hair, and more tines=better hold. Wire forks would be good, or maybe some acrylic ones. I've seen a few of those in pretty colors that look slender, although I wouldn't know for sure since I haven't gotten any yet.

Thanks, now to decide where to order from.....so many choices. I did order a stick and a fork made of buffalo horn. Not sure if that is recommended here one lhc. Not sure how well they will work for me....but I can give things to my daughters if they don't.

Amazing thread!

I started growing from a pretty extreme inverted bob, so I have some weird layers and hair on the nape of my neck is really short, as it was shaved off in that particular haircut. I'm also growing out a fringe, though it's long enough to pin back or incorporate in a french braid now. Any ideas on updos that incorporate as much hair as possible?

I'm just learning to braid, I can do a single messy french braid over my scalp, ending up in puny little ponytail at the nape, but any peacock twist, would it be with a claw clip (which I have misplaced for weeks, it's hopelessly lost) banana clip or sticks (two pencils make a secure twist, I don't have any actual sticks) leave a pretty pesky tuft of nape hair hanging down. I can of course pin it with bobby pins, but on my super smooth hair they are really visible. And my top layers are too short to do low sitting bun, I think.

Is there some good updo that I'm missing?

A picture of your hair would help me asses what type of styles you could do. You could also incorporate some headband our scarves to help hold in the layers.

I don't know how this would work for you, but I used the undo in this video:

I grew my hair out from a pixie and when it was in the mullet/bob stage it was my go-to hairstyle. Of course, I have very curly hair. You could try playing around with the twists. Hope it helps.

Here is the Pha bun I promised you lot. I just might plaster this picture all over the forum as I'm so happy with the stick, and my hair looks gorgeous in the afternoon sunshine. The stick is my early birthday present from my DH. He made it himself!

http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u406/Seventy7_lhc/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps2ea3gmwe.jpg

Normally I do get the ends tucked in nicely, but this was the quick oh-I-need-to-put-this-new-pretty-in-my-hair-straight-away bun.

I think it's funny how this bun can look a bit different every time I put my hair up in it. This depends on tension mostly, I think. I can't get the tension the same each time yet.

Seventy, that's a great picture and I love the stick. I have a knitting needle I've been playing around with. I also most of the time braid my hair for bed. And I still like the Gibson Tuck. But I do still wear it down more than up. My hair has changed a lot as it has grown over the last year. It has a bit of wave now and that seems so odd. I wonder how it will look in a month.
