Crown braid on thick hair?

Hello, I'm trying to do crown and rope braids like in these pictures

But I can't seem to get my hair evenly into a crown braid, I end up with hair sticking up, one side thicker than the other and one side closer to my hairline, I used to be able to do them on shorter hair but now my hair is a bit longer I can't seem to do them anymore, they're uneven and uncomfortable.
Also with the second picture, how would I replicate the rope braid with the hair kind of looped through at the sides?
I've tried finding youtube videos but couldn't find any for the second hairstyle

It's hard to say because I can't see the back of her head, but in the second photo, to get the loose hair to make that shape I would use a small comb tucked behind/into the braid. (This kind of comb: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ8XnKpQATO9zJkMv3eXY-Q64rQLa24b9_L8RSKM-KvcwrKeOPUZw) Buuut that wouldn't necessarily be period so I'm curious what they actually did. I don't suppose there are any other pictures of the hairstyle? :)

To create the loop on the second photo, start with the rope braid after leaving some hair in the front. Once you've secured the rope braid headband, take the hair you have left in the front and wrap it above the beginning of the braid and bobby pin in. I would imagine, the same is done on the other side of the head.

Alternatively, you can wrap the face framing hair around the beginning of the braid (before you secure the braid into a headband), this way you don't even need to bobby pin it, but I don't think it will look as neat.

I tried the rope crown braid and I am terrible at it, but I wondered if it would work using a headband and wrapping the hair around the headband like how you do headband curls but continuing all the way round rather than wrapping one side and then the other. Then threading a string of pearls or ribbon round the headband and pinning the two side sections or even wrapping them around the headband after adding the ribbon/pearls.

I'm not really any help on the braiding i'm afraid. I really suck at doing complicated styled like this and whenever i tryied i failed badly doing it on my own head. But i had good expiriences with pre braided headbands and accent braids, maybe it's easier to create this from extension, which i suppose have been used in these images anyways.
You could just make the rope braid, slap it on and tuck your own hair behind it. Sorry if that wasn't what you were asking for, i thought i should mention it nevertheless.

Good point! That's why I don't do crown braids, I do coronet braids: I English-braid the hair and wrap it around my head. I don't have enough length to wrap around the head, and my one braid is too lumpy/thick to sit snugly and securely, but when I make 2 braids and wrap them around my head, it works well. I think you need to just play with different options until you figure out what works for your hair and still provides that "crown braid" look.

Three strand just doesn't look good on my hair, it always ends up heavy, messy and uneven
