View Full Version : The Link bun

Hi everyone! As some of you may know, I came up with this bun a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t find it anywhere (maybe it doesn’t exist?)

Some members asked me to share the tutorial if I could recreate it, so here I am :o

http://i59.tinypic.com/2w7fyit.jpg

From A to C, you can see I make 2 loops. One around my index finger, and the other one around my middle finger. Then I wrap the remainder of hair around the base, until there is no hair left..
On D, E and F, I take my index finger out of the loop, and turn the loop over.
Finally, I push a hairstick through the loop created by my index finger (push it over to your left , using the hair stick as a lever). I take my middle finger out the second loop and push the hairstick through and out of the loop.
I hope you enjoy it and find it easy to understand! For me, it holds really well when I use a two prong hair fork

ETA: I found an much easier way to make this bun, and holds better!

You can make a loop around your index finger, and then wrap the remainder of hair around the base ( skip the second loop around the middle finger). The rest of the steps are the same.

Link bun.

If you look at the icons on most tool bars, they have a picture of the world and a chain link in front of it. You bun reminds me of that soooo much.

This is amazing! I think it looks like chain link or links. But it's beautiful! Well done :applause

It's such a pretty bun! Thanks for the tutorial. I think it looks like a bow (as in decorative like"hello kitty" bow) so maybe you can call it the bow bun (unless such already exists) :p

I also think Link Bun is a good name for it. Putting this on my to do list.

Just when I think I have it figured out, it falls apart. I keep messing up the part where you take the index finger out and flip the middle loop. What direction does that loop go?

Look at this mess! Hahahaaaa!!

Second to the Rose bun, I think this is my favourite looking bun ever. I've saved your tutorial to flip it (I'm a lefty, and imagining doing it your way round gave me brain fail :) )

BrendaLoan
June 12th, 2014, 06:21 AM
Thanks everyone! So link bun it is! I like it :D
MeowScat, that bun looks very similar to my first attempts (there, I think you inserted the stick in the loop before flipping it)
The loop actually goes from your left to your right ,and when you flip it you sort of "unwind" it, so it will feel loose (so make sure that loop is tighter than the middle finger loop to start with)...I really hope this makes any sense haha

I tried this several times in a row but it just won't look like your photo! What it does look like on me, however, is an infinity bun, which is only good because when I follow the instructions for the infinity bun it looks terrible, uneven because of my taper, and super small because my hair compacts a lot from twisting. With this link bun though, it looks big and poofy since there is no twisting involved! Success! :D

When I couldn't get it right I started experimenting a bit to see if I could find what I was doing wrong.. and I invented a variation! I followed your instructions, but before inserting the stick I also flipped the left loop "upside down", or, flipping it half around, if that makes sense. I ended up seeing this when I checked the back of my head in the mirror:

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/zillzi/IMG_9202hyperlinkbun_zps1002a9e6.jpg~original

Since this involves one extra step and is a variation of your link bun, I would think the hyperlink bun would be a pretty appropriate name ;)

I also made this bun vertically, it looks really intricate and sort of woven, and eats my 6" sticks! Didn't see that coming  I really like both of these buns, they will probably become staple buns for me! :D

I keep on trying and can't make it work :( The only time it looked even close was with the middle strand going vertical between two loopes... heh... :)

I'll probably fail with this bun like most other buns because of my thick ponytail and very thin ends, but still worth a shot

Just took my stick out and tried it. It feels comfortable and secure, but like Nebulae's, mine looks like and infinity. I like in the original how it almost looks like a bow.

Well, after many, many attempts, this is my best one. (pretty sad...)
I can't get it to hold with a stick whatsoever, if I squish the loops and kind of weave a fork through, I can get it to stay in.
My loops are sort of bulbous, they don't stay neat or tight. In fact, in this last attempt, I didn't wrap the length until the very end. That seemed to help anchor it better. (Meaning, after flipping the one loop over, I had the 2 loops properly positioned in my left hand, tail of hair still hanging down, then I wrapped the length and worked the fork in.)

Thank you for the lovely video, BrendaLoan! It helped a lot.

Ugh, this bun would be so much easier if my fingers were longer. This is so pretty, but I couldn't make it stay very with with sticks, it felt it would fall out if I moved much. Will definitely have to try again when I get my fork.

schnibbles, how on earth did you manage it with iii hair? I'm ii/iii with quite a bit of taper and I felt like I was running out of length.

I have been trying for an hour to get this bun, and I think I've been bested by it... I simply have too much hair :justy: I can get to hold just fine, which is great because it's very sturdy, but it just looks like a disc bun on me, not the cute link/bow looking bun that everyone else is getting!

I tried fixing the loops before wrapping my hair. I also tried leaving the last six-ten inches out of the bun, and got something that *could* be something like the link bun.

So I tried that again, except with a half up, and got this derpy-looking thing:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1445/25861661775_e2426994a2_z.jpg

I braided the end so my hair wouldn't be in my way. At least it'll hold all day...

So I tried this today and somehow managed to create this thing:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22065&d=1458258612

Is this a bun that exists? I didn't flip the loop because I couldn't remember how it was done, and I wanted to see what would happen. This isn't a link bun, but whatever it is, I like it.

That is so cool!
