View Full Version : Help others with their hair type

Katyusha

I didn't find a similar thread where others could help you determine your hair type.

So here it is, if you don't know your hair type post your pictures here and others will try and help you. To get proper results your hair must be washed with no product, uncombed and air dried.

Here is my picture, please help me determine my hair type :o

It does look like 1b to me.

Katyusha

Are you sure? I was positive it was 1b until today when I didn't comb them, to determine hair type. I'm not sure anymore :/

I'd say 1c/2a maybe?

I'll wait for other replies and then decide :) I am to choosing between 1c/2a.

yeaaah... I am a 1b and your hair has a lot more movement in it than mine. I'd say 1c/2a, right in the middle :)

Right now, 1c/2a, but it also depends what products you use in your hair on a regular basis. For example sulphates and cones kill waves that aren't very strong. You might be closer to 2a once your wave is encouraged.

There is a sticky with a visual hair typing system already at:

Thank you all for your help :)

I know there is a thread with visual hair typing system but I couldn't figure out which one best describes my hair. I use SLS and cone free shampoo and conditioner, there is no product whatsoever in first post picture.

It looks 1c to me. Mine is also 1c. Here's a hair-typing photo of it, to help you compare.

I like the idea of this thread! Being new here, I had hoped for some advice on my hair type as well, but felt like starting my own thread 'all about me' was a little too much for me.

I agree with what some of the others have said. I don't have a lot of experience, but it looks 1c to me. Pretty hair!

ExpectoPatronum
June 9th, 2014, 05:38 PM
I'd say 1b/1c. 2a to me has a wavier texture, whereas your hair looks more straight. I'm sure you could get 1c/2a if you scrunched your hair and didn't comb it out while it was drying.

Just shampoo and (maybe) condition (no prior deep treatments either). Leave alone and don't touch until it's dry (no combing, no brushing).

Looks like a 1b/1c to me. We should have more pics in the sticky for hair typing. I, too, am new here and sometimes I feel that my hair covers all ends of the spectrum :taz: I guess the more you get to know your hair the better you can understanding where in the spectrum it falls under.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I'm glad you like this thread, because I have problems with hair typing. I figured out I'm probably not the only one :) I sure hope others who don't know what their hair type is will post here.

LauraLongLocks I'd say it definitely looks like yours. When I comb my hair it looks straighter.

LauraLongLocks I'd say it definitely looks like yours. When I comb my hair it looks straighter. Glad my pic was helpful to you. I never thought I had any wave at all, but since switching to CO-washing and really paying attention to any wave pattern, I realize I do actually have a teeny bit of texture going on there.

I'd actually say 3a/b, because I see looser curls mixed in there, but more 3b. 3a curls are sidewalk chalk size, 3b are sharpie size, and 3c are pencil size, if that helps any. I'm a mix of 3a/b, but more 3a. Most of my curls are looser than yours.

Can someone help me determine my hair type?
I originally put myself as 1b, but that was when my hair was brushed out. It did have some body and the ends always flip.
This should be a proper hair typing picture. ( I did squeeze my hair out, but left it alone after that )

Could it be that my hair needs moisture? Or maybe it has too much protein? I don't really know a lot about that yet.:(
The bottom half feels quite rough but that could be because of my layers.

I'd say 1c, because of the bottom part mostly. The rest is fairly straight.

Yeah it seems like the shorter it is & the hotter it is outside, the curlier it seems. That's a bad shot since I don't have the whole head, but it seems wavy, 2a-ish most of the time, but sometimes I wonder if I mistyped myself. Or maybe it changes depending on length and weather?

renia22
July 5th, 2014, 10:47 PM
Huh, so I took a couple of more pictures and I do think I might be mistyping myself as a 2a? I use sulfates & rotate silicone/ silicone free conditioner, and air dry my hair all the way pretty much never, but for the sake of this experiment I washed with Prell & used a little bit of Aubrey Organic Chamomile volumizing conditioner. I flipped my hair upside down & got this:

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd39/elikitty/image_zpse04e90d7.jpg (http://s225.photobucket.com/user/elikitty/media/image_zpse04e90d7.jpg.html)

Another upside down angle:

And here's a random piece:

Maybe it would be fun to do the curly girl method for a few weeks to see what's really going on type-wise..

I'm really bad at figuring my type. It seems like some days my hair is a lot wavier than others, and I can get it pretty curly with certain products/scrunching. What do you think?

The first picture is after a normal shampoo/condition and air dry. I brushed it right out of the shower when it was wet and then didn't touch it. The second picture is after scrunching some product into it and letting it air dry.

Just wanted to say thanks you guys for helping me figure out my hair type. All this time I was thinking 2a, but I'm thinking now that my hair is so fine & thin, longer lengths, or even finger combing / combing when air drying must really take out the curl. Honestly I can't recall air drying my hair before without touching it, maybe since I was a kid. I did find an old photo from when I was a kid, I do think I must be 2c with 3a in the underneath layers. How funny, who knew? :

I haven't had my hair type verified for a few years and since I am now much more silver I feel as though my "type" has changed. This morning I clarified and then did a warm water and vinegar rinse. I combed through with my shower comb after the rinse and then allowed my hair to air dry.

I would be more than grateful for a little help in typing my hair.:blossom:

Hi, i am kind of struggling trying to find out my hair type. Overall, i would say it's curly, because when it air dries it gets curls (obviously), many of them really tight, but only on the bottom part of my hair, and meanwhile the top is practically straight. I always thought it was caused by the weight lf the mane pulling down from the top part. But when i blowdrye it it gete very weird and sometimes it doesn't curl or it only gets a few undefines loops. Sooo, please! Help me decide.

Oh, and also, i wasn't this cury until last year or s. Before i used to be more on the wavy side.

Example of single 'waves/curls'. Note: The very ends usually aren't straight like that. I don't know what's going on there lol.

My hair from the back (which is wayyy less wavy than the front)

Andddd I don't know why my pictures are sideways but I'm too lazy to really fix it.

I would call that 2b, possibly 2c, if you've got any hidden ringlets anywhere?

Hm...Looks like 2b is the common factor here. I do have some spirals, especially in the underneath layers.

And thanks ravenheather and molljo :blossom: I'm working on loving my natural texture still (it's taking me a while grrr) and hearing other people say they like it definitely helps.

calmyogi I'd say 2a or maybe even 2b.

Thank you Katyusha!

Johannah -- I'd call it 2a.

calmyogi -- I think you've got some potential for real curl.... I might call it 2c for the moment, but I suggest you try CurlyGirl, because you might be more like 3a. It looks like stretched curls at the moment to my eyes.

luluj -- I still think it's 2c/3a-ish.

Anje, If I put some good products in it to enhance the curl I can get some real ringlet action, But when I leave it to do it's own thing like in the picture thats what I get lol.

Anje, so what I guess I mean is your probably right :) I'm liking the slight waves I get when I brush it out after it's dry though so I don't bother trying to enhance the curl. I have itchy scalp issues too so I like to brush inbetween washes to help exfoliate and massage my scalp.

I took a hair typing photo today, washed it and conditioned like normal and then let it air dry and played with it as little as I could help, and I'm still not sure if it's 1c or 2a or something else.

Ok. I used to have a few larger spirals at the ends when it was shorter, but it's just too long now, I guess. Thanks.

It looks 1c to me in the picture, but taking length and this info into account, I'm gonna say 1c/2a.
