View Full Version : How is this style done?

I are much confused. In the photos below is the artist Tathariel; I'm sure many know of her. Her hair is amazing :crush: I don't think she's a member but I could be wrong. Anyway, I've been looking at her hair for a long time, trying to figure out how she does it. She's never answered the question from her followers on social media and so I'm turning to the experts here. It looks like an upside down topsy tail but how is it staying in place at the back? I don't think her hair is super thick (I'm pretty sure those braids are braided in from extra long synthetic hair). Is it just teased and sprayed or does a device exist for this stuff?

You'll find tons of pictures on ze Google for reference. Here are a few that show the style well.

Oh, I've seen her pictures and I just love her look! :D

It kind of looks like your basic peacock twist, but maybe held with bobby pins instead of a claw clip.

Kind of like this https://www.theoriginalswinky.com/html/images/products/styles/21.jpg but with only a bit of hair, and then you spread the hair on top to create the voluminous look.

HTH! :)

I agree! There's a photo of this look on her Instagram (here: http://instagram.com/p/na74mdQ4s_/ ) where you can see that section looks significantly shorter, as it would in a peacock twist

I sometimes did something that had a similar look when my hair was shorter - I made a ponytail just a tad below the place I wanted that "do", then bend over so that the hair fell smoothly towards the top of my head, and secured the hair just above the ponytail with some clips or bobby-pins... usually it stayed up as the ponytail was held secure in place by the rubberband / scrunchie, though it wasn't very comfortable and sometimes pulled if I put the booby-pins not "just right" ...
When I tried to do it with a "regular" peacock twist (without the ponytail stage) usually it sagged after a few hours and I had to redo it quite often... Not sure if it was the slipperiness of my hair or my lack of skills with pins / clips... Could be a combination of both, lol :)

From the difference in length between the body and the main hair it could also be bunned and pushed over. Not sure if that makes any sense. But I've never been able to make a peacock twist stay put so I use other bun types and just spread the hair over. Could also be done using a bun form. Just pin down the lowest sections to fully hide it. I will play and see if I can come up with a few more concrete options for doing it.

I'm so excited. What really gets me is how the hair doesn't split on the back of the head and how its so, well, voluminous. It's such a gorgeous style and she wears it all the time so it must be easily doable and able to withstand wind and stuff.

This lady has my dream hair!
Good style. Not sure how to do it but would be willing to give it a try and see what happens

Here's one Instagram image with her hair put away in a pony tail. I don't know if it's helpful.

I think is probably a half-up peacock twist held with a super-strong claw clip kind of thing.

to me it looks like a half-up with maybe a "fall" pinned on top (do they still call fake pony tails and such *falls*? it's what my Gram called them, anyways lol)

I don't know what those things are called either. My mum has a fall made from her hair, forty years old and she still has it attached for special occasions.

Hmmm, I don't think Marita's hair thing is a fall, though. I could be wrong but she claims not to wear extensions. Now, I hope I don't come across as too creepy :couch: -- she is my hair idol so I'm allowed to be a little obsessed, yes? -- but that part has the very same texture and colour as the rest of her hair and she's probably never cut that much off so it can't be made from her own hair. It would be very hard to find that close a match, I think.

oh, because in your first post, you said the braids were likely synthetic

~shrugs~

just my opinion..which could be incorrect

I agree that it looks like one. I hope it's not and something like that can be done with one's own growing hair :)

I think another pic of her was posted around here a while back and someone who knows her said she doesn't use extensions. Very pretty hair, and great clothes and photos.
