View Full Version : Snood time! For those wearing them.. please do tell

I am considering getting one, I have pinned my hair up on my head with claw clips to let it dry and it works really well fur the spirals/wurls/whatever my hair is doing, but taking it down is another story; clips getting eaten by hair and then fishing them out.. not so cool.

So I am thinking of snoods. I have been eyeing https://www.etsy.com/shop/asnoodforallseasons this shop which has VERY reasonable shipping to boot. I have checked out a few threads as well.. but I would like more info/pictures/instructions

For me this is what it is going to be for: mostly drying while not leaving the hair hang all the way on its own weight, and maybe sleeping in. I sleep on a cotton pillow case at the moment, braided or bunned, but for the loose hair it is not an issue as my hair is not too prone to tangling (it even thinks gel is for smoother combing ) so I am not worried about that.

My questions: who has one? How do you put the thing on. I want to put this on right after I scrunched my product in, hair loose, so not going to bun first or pin it up. I am trying to avoid that very thing which is why I would want a snood in the first place! And pictures? Of course :)

I've considered this, too, as I have a similar hairtype to you. I think, for drying hair, you'd want a crochet or knitted one in a net pattern, so there's plenty of air circulation. My hair certainly would never dry in a cotton snood.

I was looking at this one for that particular reason: https://www.etsy.com/listing/102023498/light-blue-organza-snood-with-crepe-band

Oh, right. I looked through a couple pages on A Snood for all Seasons, but all I saw was the solid fabric ones.

My friend made me a crotchet snood in a 40's style. I tried couple of times and it does keep the hair very well, but need lots of boby pins to keep it from falling down. I think more coarse hair and shorter hair is the better snood stays in place. I am on my washing hair day, i will try to see if i can take a photo of mine snood used :D

It will make difference how large a snood indeed is, I am not a fan of bobby pins but I use those clips which will likely hold the thing in place.

Very curious on the picture!

Doesn't the hair want to go peep out through the holes? I fear that I might be pushing my hair back up and in all the time

You put the crotchet snood on first like you are putting a normal hat and then you start putting your hair from the back inside it which results in snood sligly going to the back of your head. You will need couple of boby pins, clips to keep snood from falling off from the weight of your hair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqj0h8lJpY4&list=UUGaWMCGFiDixs_XMEwrxKXw

These are the old fashioned curl nets of old. You have them in shower cap versions as well, I mean the fabric with the holes in:

I have a snood that is over 20 years old. It is white cotton crochet thread and has sweet little blue beads. Unfortunately, when I wear it my nape hairs tangle into mats and I have a heck of a time detangling. I bought one not too long ago from Garlands of Grace (https://www.etsy.com/au/transaction/192835152) that doesn't mat my hair quite so badly.

I actually had a similar thought about air drying in a net snood, eadwine! I have had one for years and I can count the number of times I've worn it on one hand. Like ravenreed, it creates unbelievable tangles at the nape of my neck, and I was unable to resolve that. My snood must be in storage, or I'd have tried this out to see what happens.
As it is, now that I remember the tangle issue, I probably won't bother going out to buy a new one.

Yep, it basically looked like this: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/8/2/7/5/5/6/webimg/418916010_tp.jpg

I liked the idea of a curler net or something similar... it's tough to think of a modification that would remove the tangle problem, but maybe wearing it like this?

I think the reason that the GOG snood doesn't cause so many tangles is because of its stretchy nature, and the ties help it fit a bit snugger to the head. With my other snood, it is sort of loose and wiggles around more, and I think that the friction is causing the problem. TBH, ANYTHING near my nape hairs cause me tangles- necklaces, collars, headbands, you name it. However, the GOG snood is tolerable, whereas my beloved crocheted snood (which I wore in my wedding over 20 years ago *sniffle*), leaves me with a fist-sized knot of miserable hair. OTOH, the GOG snood is not made from a natural fiber so I don't know that it would be a good choice for hair drying.

I made two crocheted snoods. One ties on with a ribbon and one has elastic. They both stay in place without using clips or pins even if I sleep in them. I made them extra long to make room for my hair that is at waist length. I haven't had any problems with tangles so far. I like that my hair can dry scrunched up but still allow air circulation. I started using a pattern I found here one the crochet thread then I ended up changing it to suit myself.

I have a satin sleep cap that acts like a snood a bit. I use it sometimes when my hair is 90% dry and it makes for nice hair in the morning. Probably much like damp bunning. Not sure if I would be able to use it for drying per say.

Yeah I definitely see that I need to have something open to let air through for drying purposes.

I am a bit hmmm on the lace though, knowing that lace is a bit catchy on hair... it IS lovely material though: https://www.etsy.com/listing/89581350/bright-blue-lace-and-crepe-snood

For drying hair, I would be more tempted towards a rayon crocheted snood. That blue is gorgeous though!

I used to wear a crocheted snood to church, and I hated using bobby pins to keep it on (it was always pulling and had to readjust it) so I got side hair combs that matched it and with sewing thread that matched, sewed it into the band. Kept the snood up and was much more comfortable than bobby pins.

I would lightly twist my hair and tuck it under itself (if I folded it on top the ends would poke) then put the snood on with one hand up to my hair line and pull my hand away from the twisted hair and adjust it to where I liked it. That way the combs slid back and gave a nice smooth front and the hair could unravel. I hope that makes sense...

I used to get nice little waves from it if my hair was damp, but I usually took it off before my hair was dry so the waves went limp.

May 29th, 2014, 11:46 AM
I THINK I get it. Hold hair rolled inward on the bottom with one hand, the other hand positions the snood over the head so the front is sitting ok, then release the hair that is held into the snood, secure the bands/ties.

Did I get that right?

I just wish there was a good tutorial showing this.. so not that shower cap snood thing, hahaha.. but the regular snood thing, the proper way :)

To add.. to make sure IF I get one of those snoods.. I contacted the seller with the size of my head measured over the band area. I want to make sure they are not going to be too big for me.

Yup! That's exactly it!

I have a couple from a snood for all seasons, on etsy. They are the best I've found for me. I have one velvet and one satin, they both are very comfortable and stay on well. The velvet is nice when it is cold out. I do put my hair up first, usually with a hair stick, otherwise the weight of my hair will pull the snood right off. I do not use any other pins or clips, the snood stays on very well all by itself!

eadwine
May 29th, 2014, 11:14 PM
Yeah I will have to likely pin it with some clippies, but that is ok. Or maybe use the comb trick, we'll see :) Glad you are so happy with them.

Thankyou! About 3 hours? Although that doesn't include the hour I spent doing the pattern wrong and then having to unravel the lot
It's a simple pattern if you know how to crochet, and grows quickly. That's my kind of project :)
ETA 3h is a total guess tbh, I made most of it a couple of weeks ago and then had to wait until the other day to buy the elastic to finish it

Every time I see this thread I the 5 year old takes over and calls snoods sneeds and it devolves from there.

Aw man, like I need new hair toys to lust after. Snood-talk made me think of Renaissance snoods with pearls, which sent me to Etsy, which had me finding this tiny snood/bun cover.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/173150302/hair-bun-cover-renaissance-small-bun

I very much like this idea, though, of putting damp hair in a snood to help it dry with waves/curls. Might be a good enough excuse to buy one...

I crocheted a snood/muffin hat thing (will post pictures next week) that I put my wet hair up in this morning after my shower. First I should say that I just got an Aqua Splash Tangle Teezer, so it may share some of the praise. I used the aqua splash to hep distribute and then help rinse out the conditioner, then I braided pigtails while still in the shower and tied them off.

The braids got wound around my had like a faux crown braid. Then I eased the snood over the mass while holding the braids in place through the mesh. Because I never got around to the drawstring, I used several slender bronze and nickel-bronze hair sticks and forks around my head pinning through the braids and the snood so they were well anchored in my scalp hair.

After it settled into place, it stayed about where most people wear headband over the top of the head and I looked put-together and overall quite nice, nobody could tell I had 4+feet of sopping shower-hair under it. Then when I took my hair down to brush it at 6 or 7 tonight (about 8 hours after my shower), the detangling was almost instant. I will definitely be trying this again, I may get to go out in public on wash days with this technique (usually it is a full day commitment to letting my hair air dry left down in my bedroom or living room).

It took a bit of fidgeting but I managed! The neck hair was the worst  It just got washed and this snood nicely prevents the feeling of wet hair in my neck. Wait and see how it dries over the course of the day now.

eadwine
July 6th, 2014, 01:39 AM
Pull the hair back as if in a low ponytail (so it is gathered together at the neck basically). Then put the thing on and gather all the hair in your hands, and then depending what you like best use one hand to pull the elastic part and the other to shove the ball in. After that it is fidgeting and fiddling to get the rest under but it gets easier with practice; I already noticed the difference the second time I tried.

Sleeping with a snood is not for me. I looked at this picture and the song Wild Thing I Think I Loooooove You popped in my head ROFL!!!!
