I couldn't stand it anymore! My hair was so damaged, breaking, and just plain gross no matter what I did, so I decided to chop it off. :) The stylist I had was wonderful and actually was long hair friendly. I had my hair oiled when I went in and she didn't look at all surprised. After my wash, she was really shocked at how easy my hair was to comb considering all the damage. She and I discussed henna and she knew quite a bit about it! She even asked me what recipe I use and how long I keep it on. She even mentioned how strong it will make my hair. We decided on taking six inches off and keeping layers. I went from an inch past waist stretched/a bit past BSL curly to almost APL curly. I don't regret it at all!!! My curls look better than ever!!! I'm so glad I did it. I still have an inch or so of damage left, but it'll come off soon. Most of my hair has only ever known henna and maybe three uses of heat. Love it!!! Strange enough, my hair doesn't feel at all lighter. I expected to feel light...but the stylist showed me that I really didn't lost much by way of thickness. Just some length. It was really thinned out.

Ta Da!!

Thanks! I somehow managed to get my hair the same color it was when I was younger. :)

I did this exact chop for my layers (waist to apl) and it was quite a fresh start. My hair is actually growing faster now :) I wish you luck in your hair future.

Your hair is beautiful! That particular shade of red looks really natural on you, I thought you were a natural redhead until you mentioned henna!

It must feel so good to get all that damage chopped off :)
Your hair colour is very flattering next to your skin tone. And what great luck you had with such an understanding stylist! I think many of us here would give an arm and maybe a few toes to have a stylist support long hair, understand henna, and not take an extra 3 inches off for no reason haha. Bonus points for not thinking oiled hair is weird.

It looks really pretty, and you're right. If the damage is getting too hard to handle, it's best you cut it off to start afresh. Congrats on your new "do". :)

Very beautiful! Now you have a "clean slate" and it will make the growing journey much more fun and enjoyable! It really makes a difference when you are confident and happy with your hair. I went through that several times so I know how you feel.
Glad you are happy with your hair, it looks gorgeous! :)

Thank you sooooo much!! It feels amazing! For those who asked, my natural color into my twenties was auburn. It sadly faded to light ashy brown over the years. I started dying it in my twenties because the color did not look good on me. I would either bleach highlights into it or try to dye it red, which never lasted. This caused a lot of my damage.

This is the best shot I have that shows my damage. The curls and wurls would hide it in pictures.

And here is another after. You can see here that my ringlets have returned. :)

In the background, you can actually see a pic of me with my hair bleached and straightened from a little over a year ago.

Gosh that pic is huge! Sorry!!!
