View Full Version : Question about sock buns for sleeping?

Hi all.
I've been really struggling to find a way of doing my hair for bed. I was doing braids and that kept tangling down to a minimum, but I hate having braid waves all the time. I don't mind them, it's just sometimes I want to enjoy my natural texture and not the wavey craziness I get from braids. Not only that, but I'm starting to get a lot of splits and broken hairs and I suspect it's from tying my braids off every night. I've tried a sleep cap in both satin and silk and I either couldn't get it to stay on my head, or it kept me awake, OR it made my head so hot that I woke up to hair that was drenched. That pretty much defeated the purpose of the cap...

So last night I actually fell asleep with a sock bun in my hair. When I woke up, I took it out and I had pretty curls and LOTS of volume at my roots, since I had the bun right on top of my head. I was thinking, is this an okay way of protecting my hair at night, and getting pretty 2nd, third day hair? I use a small fabric hair tie and I only twist it around my hair twice so it's pretty loose. I don't put any pins in it, I just leave it like that. It stays pretty well without them. I guess I'm wondering if this will damage my hair in anyway... I could always switch it up with braids for when I want waves and varying the place I put the bun at night.

I hope it's not damaging because I had the prettiest 2nd day hair today. :o

Ooh! I'm gonna try this tonight, I fail at decent second day hair. I was thinking the same thing about sock buns though because of the ponytail part of it. I guess if it's a loose scrunchie and it's not rubbing around, since you're sleeping anyways it should be okay. That's just me thinking though, hopefully someone else with experience chimes in.:o

I've taken naps before with my hair in a hairagami sock bun, and I'm a pretty active sleeper. Didn't notice any damage, but we do have different methods of securing them.

I'd imagine the elastic in your sock bun is less likely to be damaging, because it's on top of your head, so it's less likely to be rubbing than the elastic at the bottom of a braid. I've definitely read about other people sleeping in sock buns to get curls; sadly, I've never mastered the art of the sock bun, so I've never been able to try it myself.

I sleep with my hair in a topknot: just a cinnbun or nautilus with a big jawclip clamped over it. It works great! (Sockbuns roll out for me. I can't make them stay without pins, but they do give some fabulous waves!)

Thank you guys! I slept last night with a sock bun, right on top of my head last night again. This morning when I took it out, my hair had some wonderful curls in it. Less volume, but my third day hair is pretty greasy already since I wash tonight. Dry shampoo took care of it though! Hopefully this doesn't cause my any damage because I LOVE my hair this way :)

Here we go! I had some really horrifying nightmares last night so this morning my bun looked like a tornado hit it and it was unraveling itself a bit. I took it down, smoothed my scalp hairs down and pinned my bangs to the side because 2nd day bangs are nasty on me lol

Even though my bun was a mess, my hair wasn't tangled and my hair still looks super cuuute!!

It does look super cute!

What kind of sock bun did you do, the one where you roll the whole length or the one where you just pull the hair over the sock & wrap the rest around the sides?

The one where I roll the whole length. I don't have enough thickness to make the other way work lol

Thank you :)

I did my first attempt at this last night but I dampened my hair first and it didn't dry at all overnight wahh. I'll try again tonight with dry hair:cool:

I usually spray a but of water just on the ends. They're easier to tuck neatly if they're damp. If I get it to wet, it does dry just fine but my curls turn out kinda crazy lol Good luck on your 2nd attempt!

I do the same for days I want curls--sock buns are awesome!

I've also slept with my hair wrapped around a wide soft headband (like this (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_TuAJY7o0xs/T0ZvKPmBFgI/AAAAAAAADwc/ZxZSejUUfio/s1600/2-24+7.jpg)) when I want less curl around my face and more just on the length. Super comfy.

I've tried doing that once, but it was hard to get it to stay in, and when I did take it out my hair was in one massive tangle. It worked great on my roommate though! Sh'e my guinea pig haha
