View Full Version : Wet and dry hair comparisons

I don't know about you guys, but my hair looks very different when wet compared to dry, so different that you wouldn't believe it was the same hair at all. The color changes a lot and my hair looks so much thinner when wet. There's only a few thin tentacles left when it's sopping wet. So I tried to look for a thread with comparison pictures and couldn't find one. Well now there is one! :)

I don't have a picture of my wet hair right now but I will take one of my own hair on wash day. Maybe this thread can serve as encouragement to those who feel their hair doesn't look as great as others' does when wet.

ETA: My pictures can now be found in post #29.

And if you are not comfortable putting up a picture comparison, written descriptions are also welcome!

My hair is the same! It's so embarrassingly thin-looking when wet, but my hair has a lot of body for how thin it is, so it ends up looking decent when dry. :) No photos, though, as I just don't have the courage to take one!

Well, my hair looks sad when it's wet, but I guess that's the point of the thread, so here goes.

Fresh out of the shower and unbrushed, brushed, dry.

And a couple close-ups I took on a whim. These make me laugh for some reason, I've never seen my hair so close up! It looks bizarre!

Ha, I should take a couple of comparison shots. My hair is really wavy when it's wet (about 2a-2b), but if I don't damp-braid and oil it, it goes frizzy and the waves are erratic.

On the plus side, it looks its actual length (hip-length) when it's wet. When it's dry, it's ridiculously thick and it spreads out a lot.

Tomorrow might be wash day so I'll surely be posting my comparison either then or at the latest this weekend. And I will surely be eagerly waiting for your comtribution. :)

Well this is just the idea of the thread! I always think my hair looks horrible when wet with the layers and all taking even more out of the thickness in the bottom half of my hair, but I figured maybe I'm not alone with this. As you say, there can be a drastic difference between the two states.

If I had only seen this thread this morning, today was wash day! I will take pictures next time and post them :)
Well we will be waiting for your pictures from the next wash day. :)

When wet my hair looks closer to it's actual length.
This is another thing that intrigues me as a straightie who hardly has any body to take the length away. The difference can be huge!

Oh I don't think your hair looks sad at all! In fact it looks so voluminous even when wet. You'll see what truely sad looking hair is when I post my pictures. ;)

I would love to see what kind of a difference there can be with hair that actually has volume. Mine only does when I brush out some waves and then it does look like a big poofball, but that all goes away the moment I dampen it even a bit. So pictures, yes!

Mine looks like it belongs to a different person when it's wet - it's jet black and really wurly, looking at it wet you would expect me to be a 2C or even 3A but the wurls (and corkscrew curls at the nape/temples) fall out as it dries into a messy wave. It looks a lot straighter in everyday life than it is naturally due to 'cones and damp bunning, but when wet the truth comes out!

Well it seems dark hair definitely has less of a color change from wet to dry based on both of your pictures. Both of your wavy/curly textures also seem to stay quite the same from wet to dry, but then again it seems both of you did have a styling product in to keep the waves/curls in the shape they are so it makes sense. I wonder if there's a lot of change to that fact when a styling product is not used?

My hair is definitely wavier too when wet but it dries to that "Is there some body wave? I don't know if there's body wave." kind of mess with some flips at the ends mostly. Have you tried the curly girl method to enhance your waves or are you just not bothered? I did it once but it left my hair looking like some sort of s freak monster so I didn't continue. I know it takes weeks or months to get really great results from it, but I'm also the "bun/braid and go" type of person and very rarely wear my hair down so the results would have been wasted of me anyway.

I've found that without styling product, the waves are there, but there's lots and lots of frizz. If I comb often while it's drying without product, I can get my hair nearly straight, about 1b/1c.

Same here. It's annoying, because I only like to wear hair loose when going out, so most days I wash it and comb it and put it up, so I never really get to see my natural waves, just braid and bun waves ;)

I have very little wave even when I try to keep them like that so mostly I end up just brushing my hair at some point when it's still damp if I don't go sleep right away after washing. Brushing makes my hair nearly stick straight so I don't wonder why I kept thinking I have stick straight hair when I always brushed wet pre-LHC.

Just showered and took my wet photos, now I need to wait for it to dry!

I just took a picture pre-wash and now I'm sitting here with conditioner on my head so soon I can rinse it and take the wet picture. In fact I might even take it further and take a picture without brushing after it is dried (so tomorrow) to make it a full circle. :)

That's how my hair looks exactly, funny how I can go somewhere with wet hair, and it looks so thin and then people see how it transforms as it dries, and gets big and poofy. Because it's curly/wavy, I also only have a few clumps on each side, just like yours, and it's so easy to finger detangle in the shower because of the clumps, (so few) and they look so thin. I wonder what people must think when they see me with wet hair for the first time after seeing my airy/poofy curls, they must think, wow such little hair in reality!

Thank you for starting this thread! I just took pictures the other day of my hair before shower and right after a shower and it has been driving me nuts. My hair looks a million times longer when it is wet. When it's wet I can really track my growth progress but when it's dry it just poofs out and especially the longest pieces curl up. Oi! I hate it! Ever since I was a little girl I've loved my hair when wet and wished that it would just stay like that! :horse:

This is me some time ago, hair is about halfway dry after washing and nothing done to it. It fluffs up quiet a bit when it's completely combed and dry, so i usually oil and bun it, before it even gets there, unless i straighten. Haven taken a shot for comparison but you can see it in my profile pic from the front.

In the towel-drived pic, is that all your hair, or do you have some pieces in front??? Looks like mine, funny how it clumps up, but doesn't turn into waves, more. It looks like it should! But mine is pretty comparable, concerning the quantity!

My hair looks completely different dry and wet. When wet it looks black, it hangs stray down and looks almost like I have no hair at all (no volume, completely flat). When dry it will look two ways depending if I finger comb it or if I use a brush. If I use my fingers it will have very distinct waves and a few loose curls here a there, very shiny and dark coloured and not a lot of volume. It I use a brush it will look almost straight with some soft waves and very few distinct curls (mostly on the front at my left side), the colour dulls, becomes slightly lighter brown, and it gets quite a good amount of volume from the top of my ears down. I would post pictures but I still don't know how to  (am working on this but all help is welcome :)).

Loving these! Mine also goes from flat to fluff, and everything depends on whether I leave it alone, comb or brush it.

The first pic is out-of-the-towel-tresses, middle two pics show the difference between ringletty clumps and finger-fluffedness (taken seconds apart--those winding clumps were NEVAH gunna dry), and the last pic is mainly dry and wide-toothed combed.

That it indeed all of my hair there in all pictures. I made sure everything was at the back and nothing was left in front of me. I only blotted it towel dry this time though and didn't have it inside a towel (or as I do it, t-shirt) for 10 minutes since I got too lazy to take yet another picture. I did say my hair is just a few tentacles when wet, didn't I? :)

Witness the amazing, disappearing tattoo! The first picture is wet and uncombed hair, blotted with a towel so I wouldn't soak the floor while taking pictures. The one in the middle is my equally wet hair after combing it out. The third picture was taken after three hours of air drying. I didn't lounge around the house wearing only a towel for three hours, by the way, I just stripped back down for continuity reasons. ;)

Looking at my hair soaking wet can be kind of depressing, but the tiny tentacles do beef up a bit with drying and combing. The colour change isn't quite as obvious in the pictures as it is in real life, due to the crummy artificial lighting (and my lack of photography skills).

mamaherrera

No I was just wondering, but seriously I only have a few tentacles like that just like you. I can't believe how much mine becomes air/poofy, but how little it is when wet. the only weird thing is when it's wet, it feels so heavy, (like I really have all this hair), but when it's full/poofy/voluminous, it feels so light and airy.

Great wet to dry transformations inanna, divinedobbie and Dweamgoil!

Divinedobbie, if the thinness of your ends is bothering you, you could always micro-trim or maintain for a while. You don't have to have a chop and lose length to get thicker ends. Micro-trimming or maintaining just would mean that you would grow slower for a while. That's usually what I opt for when I need to choose between a chop and maintaining. If you have a a specific length goal coming up shortly ahead and want to grow there fast before slowing your growth down by microtrims, you can always grow there and maintain for a while. That's what I'm doing now: grow to TBL and then maintain.

I don't know if I'm in your list of those who would belong to the more wavy folk, but I can show you what happens if I don't comb, add some conditioner as leave in and scrunch or plop. Here you go, tentacles which fall out once the hair dries! Well it may leave a few kinks or such which are not so pretty. This picture was taken after just scrunching and then air drying without leave-in in I remember correctly, but it's a pretty good representative to what I get. I actually posted a thread about what the hell is wrong with me and am I supposed to be wavy or not, but people came to the conclusion that I am not wavy and this texture is due to layers and damage. Anyway, based on this picture if my hairtype isn't straight, it's chevron. :D

May 11th, 2014, 07:22 AM
Hair always looks stringy when wet. When you're wavy, or curly, that's considered clumping, so there is a likeness across the board, IMO. I encourage all 1'ers to take a good look at their hair wet, and possibly go CG on that. You might be more wavy than you realize, ladies!

Ocelan
May 11th, 2014, 07:46 AM
How much leave in did you use there?

Not much, maybe a walnut or two walnuts size glop (of my regular cone-free conditioner as leave-in too since I haven't found an unscented leave-in) from maybe shoulders down, because if I use more my hair doesn't like it. I use it in dripping wet hair, squeeze the excess water out and scrunch. Or that's what I did. Nowadays I can't be bothered. I just pat the excess water in a towel and then put my hair in a t-shirt to dry for 20 minutes until I let air dry the rest of the way. I don't brush until dry when I put my hair up in a bun anyway. I guess if I had my hair down more I could try to enhance my waves, but it's always easiest for me to brush and put up so I won't.

ETA: Oh, and what does straight hair look when wet? I'd like to see that too, if all heads here are wavies, just for comparison reasons. :)

I think you used way too much. ;)

You know a 10eurocent coin? I used that amount with a little mountain on top. And that was even a smidgen too much, so I think with the two wallnuts you went a little overboard there *giggle*

Oh, I mistook hazelnuts for walnuts! Sorry, English is not my first language. I just googled "walnut" and laughed. Nope, I definitely don't use that much. One or two hazelnuts worth, that's how much I use, haha (and even those I mean when peeled). The 10 cent amount you describe is pretty much what I've always used. It never feels like too much and I know when I put on too much because my hair would dry all crunchy and matte (one time I tried to "save" my dry feeling hair by adding leave-in so that I wouldn't need to wash it that day... I put too much and then ended up washing the stuff off. That time I think I used a walnut size. Yep, definitely would be too much!)

And the picture shown above was without leave-in, just to remind you. There my hair was just scrunched without product. It just.... does that, for whatever reason. Or atleast did, because I haven't tried it in a while. Like I said, peple deemed it as damaged hair trying to do... whatever the strange thing it does, so maybe I might have better luck when my layers and old dye damage have grown out. As I said, I'm not worried because I'm fine with the straight texture my hair gets if I do nothing with it. Atleast it's easy and there's no frizz. :)

Oh that is quite the difference yes, walnut of hazelnut

Gotta love hair with a mind of its own :)

I'm definitely a wavy whose waves turn to frizz because I can't be bothered to go CG on my hair. If I wear it down, I prefer to give it a blast of cool air with the hair dryer to make it dry smooth and straight. That doesn't happen too often, usually after a bit of air drying it's up and out of the way. :)

What a great idea for a thread! I'll take pictures next time I wash my hair. I always feel miserable when I see my hair wet because you can see how little hair I have, since I have lost so much thickness over the years it makes sense. :(

I went a little overboard in taking photos of my hair (seriously, sign you are addicted to a forum is when you are staying up late on a work night to wait for your hair to dry so you can photograph it!) but here are some shots of my hair wet, dry, and brushed. Click the pictures to embiggen, and have a look at my album for a couple I didn't include here to spare you the pain of scrolling past them.

Dripping wet hair, dark and tentacle-y

Dry hair (left entirely on its own to dry), fluffy and semi-wavy

Brushed hair, less fluffy, fairly sleek and straight except for wibbly ends

And next day, braid waves from my sleep plait

And then the hair was bunned up and put away, and I set off to be late to work!
